Life story
Igis
Peter Hegnauer was baptised on 19 February 1812 at Igis, a farming village in the Rhine valley of Graubünden, Switzerland, the son of Nutt Hegnauer and Luzia Luzi.1 He was the only one of their children known to have outlived them: his elder brother Christian died in 1830, aged twenty-three, and two other children of the marriage were buried at Igis (see his parents' profiles).2
On 2 June 1833, aged twenty-one, Peter married Anna Berri in the church at Igis.3 The register of Igis citizen families remembers her as Anna Berry of Trimmis, a village a few miles up the valley towards Chur.4
Thirteen children
Over the next twenty-five years Peter and Anna brought thirteen children to the Igis church for baptism. The first, born in March 1834, was named Nutt after Peter's father.5 Verena followed in July 1836, Luzia, named after Peter's mother, in May 1838, Georg in April 1840, Maria in October 1841 and Anna at the end of January 1844 (one index says 1843).6–10 A second Georg was born in January 1846, Margreth in February 1848, a son Peter in September 1849 and Christian just after Christmas 1850.11–14 Christina came in November 1854, Elsbeth in October 1856 and, when Anna was in her forties, a second Christian in April 1858.15–17
Four of the thirteen died young. Georg died in September 1840 at five months, and Margreth in August 1848 at not quite six months; little Peter died in April 1851 and Christian in July 1852, each about a year and a half old.18–21 Peter's own parents died within ten months of each other, his mother in March 1853 and his father in January 1854.22–23
The surviving children married from the 1850s on: Nutt to Anna Barbara Bühler in 1856, Verena to Jakob Theurer, Luzia to Gabriel Steiner and Maria to Adam Adank in 1863, and Anna to Johann Joseph Frick in 1865; Georg probably married Elisabeth Flütsch at Lichtensteig, St. Gallen, in 1878.24 Maria and Anna were still having their children baptised in Switzerland in 1868 and 1870.25
America
In 1872, when he was sixty, Peter left Igis for America, as the village's register of citizen families records.4 Several of his children also went to America. In 1880 the census found Peter, 68, and Anna, 65, both born in Switzerland, at Fountain City, a river town on the Mississippi in Buffalo County, Wisconsin.26 Their daughter Elsbeth, the wife of John Schamann, had given birth to a son there in September 1878.27
Maria and Anna, with their husbands Adam Adank and Johann Joseph Frick, settled further down the Mississippi at Burlington, Iowa, where their own children married in the 1880s and 1890s. Each daughter's death record in Iowa names her father as Peter Hegnauer.28–30 The youngest son, Christian, married Nellie (Cornelia) Conzett in Illinois in 1884 and raised his family in Ohio; he died at Columbus in 1926 and was buried at Mansfield. His death record names his parents as Peter Hegnauer and [Anna] Berry.31
When and where Peter himself died has not been found. The 1880 census is the last record of him.26

The Bürgerregister abstract, as noted by the study, records his emigration in 1872. A Peter Hegnauer, born about 1812 in Switzerland, with his wife Anna, born about 1815, was living in Wisconsin in 1880.

Probable identification: the names, ages and Swiss birth fit Peter and Anna of Igis; their daughter Elsbeth, born at Igis in 1856, had a son at Fountain City in Sep 1878 as the wife of John Schamann; and Peter emigrated in 1872. The household and occupation are not in the index extract.

Research notes
- Sources: The Swiss church records are from FamilySearch's index of the Igis Reformed parish registers ("Switzerland, Catholic and Reformed Church Records"); none of the images has been viewed. The American records are FamilySearch index entries, not read beyond the index. The Bürgerregister abstract is a secondary source, known from the study's notes; its wording for this family was not transcribed.4 The couple is the study's family group F0078 (seventeen index entries for baptisms, which merge to thirteen children).
- Birth year: The baptism is dated 19 Feb 1812, and his marriage index and the 1880 census both compute 1812.1, 3, 26 The Bürgerregister abstract gives 1811, which would mean a birth late in 1811 and a baptism some weeks later. The study's earlier "1811" is replaced by "before 19 Feb 1812".
- Children's dates: Georg's baptism is indexed twice as 17 Apr 1840 and once as 17 Apr 1839; his burial (Sep 1840) computes 1840 in two indexes, so 1840 is preferred.8, 18 Anna's baptism is indexed as 1 Feb 1843 (born 28 Jan 1843) and twice as 1 Feb 1844 (born 28 Jan 1843 or 1844); her 1865 marriage index computes 1844, which fits an age of twenty-one and a birth in Jan 1844, so 1844 is now preferred (see her profile).10, 24 The images should settle both.
- Christina (born 1854): Only her baptism (3 Dec 1854) is known, so she has no profile yet. Her marriage or burial should be looked for in the Igis registers and in America.15
- The Fountain City couple (probable): The Peter (born about 1812) and Anna (born about 1815) Hegnauer of Fountain City in 1880 are taken to be this couple: the names, ages and Swiss birth fit; their daughter Elsbeth, born at Igis in 1856, was having children at Fountain City in 1878; and Peter's emigration in 1872 is recorded at Igis.26, 27, 4 The census image should be read for the household.
- Children in America: Maria is WikiTree's Marie May (Hegnauer) Adank (Hegnauer-3), born 13 Oct 1841, the date of Maria's Igis baptism, died 12 Mar 1922 at Burlington.32, 9 WikiTree's biography of Hegnauer-3 also places her at Fountain City in 1880 (unsourced there); if the census confirms it, that strengthens the identification of the Fountain City couple. Anna Frick's Iowa death record names her father as Peter Hegnauer.30 Elsbeth (as Elizabeth Hegnauer) is named as the mother of a bride at Helena, Montana, in 1919 (see her profile). Christian's Ohio death record gives his birth as 7 Aug 1858; his Igis baptism gives born 8 Apr 1858 and Find a Grave 7 Apr 1858, so "August" is probably a slip.31, 17 His wife, indexed "Couzett", is Cornelia Conzett, born in Iowa about 1864; Conzett is a Graubünden name. Of the children who grew up, Nutt, Verena, Luzia and Georg are not known to have emigrated; their later lives have not been traced.
- Georg (born 1846): Probably the Georg Hegnauer, born 1846, who married Elisabeth Flü[b]sch [Flütsch] at Lichtensteig, St. Gallen, in Nov 1878 and had five children baptised at St. Gallen, 1879–1886; the marriage index names his mother Anna Berri but his father "Joh", so the link is not proven (see his profile).24
- WikiTree: Hegnauer-26, a Peter Hegnauer with no dates, is linked on WikiTree as the father of Hegnauer-3 (Maria), with Barry-431 ("Mary Barry", born 1821 in Ireland) as her mother.32 Hegnauer-26 is therefore this Peter (probable); Barry-431 is his wife Anna Berri with wrong name, birth year and birthplace (see her profile). On 27 Sep 2026 Hegnauer-26 was confirmed as this Peter (its child Hegnauer-3 was born on the day of Maria's Igis baptism), connected to his parents Hegnauer-57 and Luzi-16, and given this biography; his wife's profile is now Berri-16.
- Death: Not found. A "Mrs. Anna Hegnauer" is listed at Burlington, Iowa, in 1885, where two of the daughters lived; if she is his widow, he died between 1880 and 1885.33 Leads: Buffalo County, Wisconsin, death and cemetery records (Fountain City); Des Moines County, Iowa (Burlington), death records and cemeteries; the 1885 Iowa state census; a passenger list of 1872.
