Luzia Hegnauer was born at Igis, Graubünden, Switzerland, on 15 May 1838 and baptised two days later, the third child of Peter Hegnauer and Anna Berri. She bore the name of her grandmother, Luzia Luzi.1

On 7 June 1863, aged twenty-five, Luzia married Gabriel Steiner in the church at Igis.2 Her younger sister Maria married Adam Adank two months later. No children of Luzia and Gabriel, and no later record of either of them, have been found.
