Igis

Elsbeth Hegnauer was born at Igis, Graubünden, Switzerland, on 15 October 1856 and baptised on 26 October, the twelfth child of Peter Hegnauer and Anna Berri.1 She was fifteen when her father left Igis for America in 1872, and she probably went with her parents.

Fountain City, Wisconsin

By 1878 Elsbeth was married to John Schamann and living at Fountain City, a river town on the Mississippi in Buffalo County, Wisconsin. There, on 15 September 1878, she gave birth to a son, Johann.2 Two years later the census found her parents, Peter and Anna Hegnauer, in the same town.3

Elsbeth, as Elizabeth Hegnauer, and John Schamaun are named as the parents of Hedwig B. Schamaun when Hedwig married Walter J. Gasell at Helena, Montana, on 7 May 1919.4 Whether the family had moved west, and when and where Elsbeth died, has not been found.

  • Emigration and marriage: Neither has been found. She was fifteen when her parents left Igis in 1872 (see her father's profile); if she went with them, she married in America, about 1873–1878.
  • Identification of the Montana bride's mother: "Elizabeth Hegnauer", wife of John Schamaun, is taken to be Elsbeth, wife of John Schamann: the husband's name and the rare surname make another couple very unlikely.4
