Life story
Nutt Hegnauer was baptised in 1779 at Igis, a farming village in the Rhine valley of Graubünden, Switzerland, the second child and eldest son of Christian Hegnauer and Ursula Radig.1 His name was his grandfather's: his father was very probably the Christen baptised at Igis in December 1748 to Nutt Hegnauer and Madlena Krädtli.2 With his wife, Luzia Luzi, Nutt founded one of the Hegnauer citizen families of Igis, and their son Peter took that line to America in 1872.3
Early life
Nutt grew up in Igis with an elder sister, Agatha, a younger brother, Jakob, born in 1783, and a younger sister, Elisabeth, born in 1785.4–6 His three other brothers were each named Christian, like their father, and none of them lived long. A Christian aged about three was buried in June 1784 and a baby Christian in September 1789, very probably the first and the second of them, and the youngest was buried in May 1791, the day after his baptism.7–11
Nutt was about twenty when the old Free State of the Three Leagues came to an end. From 1798 to 1800 Graubünden was a battleground, occupied twice by Austrian and twice by French troops, and in 1803 it became a canton of the Swiss Confederation.12
Marriage and family
On 23 December 1806, in the church at Igis, Nutt married Luzia Luzi, a daughter of Peter Luzi and Elsbeth Donau; she was some eight years older than he.13–14 Their first son was baptised on 23 April 1807 and named Christian, after Nutt's father.15 A son named Benediget (Benedikt) was buried on 25 October 1810, and Peter, who bore the name of Luzia's father, was baptised on 19 February 1812.16–17 The burial register records one more child of Nutt and Luzia, whose name the index does not give.18 Christian, the eldest, died on 22 October 1830, aged twenty-three.19
Later years
Peter married Anna Berri at Igis in June 1833. His first son, baptised in March 1834, was named Nutt after his grandfather, and a daughter born in 1838 was named Luzia after her grandmother.20–22 In 1850 Igis, still a village of vineyards, orchards and livestock, had 637 inhabitants.23
Luzia died on 9 March 1853.14 Nutt outlived her by ten months. He died at Igis on 8 January 1854, aged about seventy-four, and was buried two days later; the register of his burial names his parents, Christian and Ursula, and his wife, Luzia Luzi.24 His sister Elisabeth died in January 1858 and his brother Jakob in July of the same year.25–26
The register of Igis citizen families, as abstracted by the Bürgergemeinde Landquart, counts Nutt and Luzia as the third of the village's Hegnauer founding couples. Their son Peter, who had married Anna Berry of Trimmis, emigrated to America in 1872.3

Research notes
- Sources: Every church record here is from FamilySearch's index of the Igis Reformed parish registers ("Switzerland, Catholic and Reformed Church Records"); none of the images has been viewed. The Bürgerregister abstract is a secondary source.3 The couple is the study's family group F0074.
- Baptism: Found only in September 2026, by the study's variant-spelling harvest: the index reads him as "Ruttin Hegnaner", son of Christen Hegnaner and Urschla Radig, and gives the year 1779 without day or month.1 The index misreads N as R elsewhere in the Igis registers ("Rutt" for Nutt Hegnauer, 1746). Christen is also the form of his father's name at the probable baptism of 1748.2
- Parents: Proven. His baptism names Christen [Christian] Hegnauer and Urschla Radig, and his burial, whose three index entries agree, names Christ [Christian] Hegnauer and Ursula Nadig [Radig].1, 24 The study's earlier summary of the Igis families had counted Nutt and Luzia among the cousins' lines; the burial showed that he was Jakob's brother (see his father's profile).
- Birth: 1779, the year of his baptism. His burial index computes 1780 from his age, which fits a man born in 1779 who was 74 in January 1854.24
- Grandfather (probable): The link to Nutt Hegnauer (H1022) rests on the probable identification of his father with the Christen baptised at Igis on 12 Dec 1748; the argument is on his father's profile.
- His wife: Luzia's burial (1853) gives her birth year as 1771 and her parents as Peter Luzi and Elsbeth Donau; it is taken to be hers because she is the only Luzia who married a Hegnauer in the Igis indexes, and Nutt's burial names his wife Luzia Luzi (see her profile).14
- Children: Christian (baptised 23 Apr 1807, died 22 Oct 1830), Benediget (buried 25 Oct 1810; no baptism found, so probably born about 1808–1810), Peter (baptised 19 Feb 1812) and an unnamed child whose burial entry has no date in the study's extract.15, 19, 16, 17, 18 Christian's baptism, as indexed, fell four months after the marriage; both dates should be checked on the images. There may be more children after 1812 whose baptisms are not indexed.
- Peter's birth year: The Bürgerregister abstract gives 1811; his baptism is indexed on 19 Feb 1812.3, 17
- FamilySearch and WikiTree: FamilySearch GWH9-4Q2 (Nuttin Hegnauer, 1780–1854), to which his baptism was attached in September 2026; WikiTree Hegnauer-57, created by the study in September 2026.
