Life story
Elisabeth Hegnauer was baptised at Igis, in the Rhine valley of Graubünden, Switzerland, on 3 May 1785; the register calls her Lisabeth. She was the younger daughter of Christian Hegnauer and Ursula Radig, and the sister of Jakob Hegnauer.1–2 As the wife of Johannes Riedberger she brought up a family at Igis, and so far as the records show she spent her whole life there, dying in January 1858 at the age of seventy-two.3–4
Childhood
Her sister Agatha and her brothers Nutt and Jakob were older; Jakob, less than two years her senior, had been baptised in September 1783.2, 5–6 None of her three brothers named Christian, like their father, lived long. The first had very probably been buried, aged three, the year before she was born; the second, born when she was nearly four, very probably died as a baby; and the third, born when she was six, was buried the day after his baptism.7–12
Elisabeth was thirteen when war came to Graubünden. From 1798 to 1800 it was a battleground, occupied twice by Austrian and twice by French troops, and in 1803 it became a canton of the Swiss Confederation.13
Marriage and family
On 31 March 1807, at Igis, Elisabeth married Johannes Riedberger.3 Their first child, a daughter, was baptised on 9 December 1807 and named Ursula, after Elisabeth's mother, who died the following July.14–15 A son, Johannes, followed on Christmas Day 1809, and a second son, named Christian after her father, in July 1812.16–17 Anna was baptised in August 1817 and Elisabeth in December 1820.18–19
In July 1829, when Elisabeth was forty-four, a daughter was baptised on the 21st and named Elisabeth after her; she was buried five days later. Another child of Johannes and Elisabeth, whose name the index does not give, had been buried on 23 July.20–21 Her son Johannes married Margreth Krättli at Igis in March 1842.22
Later years
Her brother Nutt died at Igis in January 1854.23 Elisabeth died there on 3 January 1858, aged seventy-two, and was buried three days later. The register of her burial calls her Elisabeth Riedberger Hegnauer, her married and maiden names together, and still names her parents, Christian and Ursula, more than seventy years after her baptism.4 Jakob, the brother nearest her in age, died six months later.24

- Identity: The Lisabeth baptised in 1785 is the only daughter Elisabeth of Christian and Ursula. Her burial names Christian Hegnauer and Ursula Nadig (a reading of Radig) as her parents and gives her age as 72, which fits a birth in 1785, and she named her first daughter Ursula and a son Christian.1, 4, 14, 17
- Her burial: Earlier known to the study only from the father's lines of its three index entries, and taken to be probably her burial, the entry was read in full on 27 Sep 2026: Elisabeth Riedberger Hegnauer, died 3 Jan 1858, buried 6 Jan 1858, aged 72 years (the index computes born 1786).4 Her baptism of May 1785 is the better evidence for her birth.
- Marriage date (conflict): Two FamilySearch indexes of the same register differ: 31 Mar 1807 (6F84-XHDZ) and 31 Mar 1804 (66VW-FVYB, groom "Riedberyer").3, 25 1807 is preferred, because the first child was baptised in Dec 1807 and none is indexed from 1804 to 1807, but the register image should be read. Other Igis marriages of women named Elisabeth Hegnauer in these years (to Andreas Wolf, 1802, and Andreas Bösch, 1808) are of other women.
- The 1829 children: The baptism (21 Jul) and burial (26 Jul) of Elisabeth, and a burial on 23 Jul of an unnamed child, with further undated index lines for an unnamed child of the couple in both the baptism and the burial series, suggest twins born in July 1829, one of whom died unnamed, perhaps before baptism (an inference).20, 21 The images would settle it.
- Her husband: Johannes Riedberger (FamilySearch has him as Johannes Rietberger, GJDX-D81) has no WikiTree profile yet. His parentage and dates have not been researched, and whether he outlived her is not known.
