Christian Hegnauer was born at Igis, Graubünden, Switzerland, on 27 December 1850 and baptised on 5 January 1851, the tenth child of Peter Hegnauer and Anna Berri.1 Four months later his elder brother Peter died. Christian himself died on 3 July 1852, about eighteen months old, and was buried on 5 July.2 His parents gave the name again to their youngest son, Christian, born in 1858, who went to America.
