The deaths of Luzius Hegnauer and Anna Margreth Bernet

PARTIAL — interrupted by usage limit. The search was stopped on the lead's order before tasks A1–A11 were all exhausted; section 5 lists what is still open.

Research report for Batch A of docs/RESEARCH-PLAN-direct-line.md (tasks A1–A11): H0001 Luzius Hegnauer (bapt. Igis 8 Dec 1819; alive 15 Jul 1890) and H0036 Anna Margreth Bernet (bapt. Igis 27 Feb 1819; alive 1884). Browser and download work by an agent (Claude), 27 Sep 2026 (the late evening, US time). Everything was read-only: nothing was edited, attached or saved on Ancestry, FamilySearch or WikiTree, and no master or data/*.csv file was changed. Fourteen free public-record images were saved to media/switzerland/igis/ and logged in its README. The proposed index rows are in data/raw/batch-A-2026-09-27.json; they have not been applied.

Conventions: [?] marks an uncertain reading and […] an editorial addition. "Text layer" means the machine-readable text of the Staatsarchiv's PDF; every quotation said to be "read on the image" was checked against the page itself. FamilySearch image numbers are positions in the digital folder (DGS).

1. Summary

The deaths are still not found. Luzius's death stays after 15 Jul 1890 and Margreth's after 1884. Every free source the plan names was searched; the results below are negatives, except for new Swiss records of Luzius's life before 1856.

1. The "d. 1895" claim has no source. In the newkoch tree (Ancestry 207846516), Luzius's death is entered as "AFT 1895", with no place, description, citation, media or note; Ancestry's timeline and LifeStory turn it into "d. 1895". Margreth's "1897" is equally bare. The tree's only source, a text source titled "Igis church records", is attached to the deaths of Luzius's brother Jakob (24 Jul 1887) and sister Elsbeth (17 Jan 1888), not to Luzius or Margreth. The claim has no evidential weight.
2. Which Swiss record could hold a death abroad. The Igis church books end in 1887, both on FamilySearch (DGS 8195990; last indexed burial 13 Feb 1887, last baptism 19 Jul 1887) and on the Staatsarchiv Graubünden (StAGR) microfilms (A I 21 b 2/88.2, 1801–1887). A death of an Igis citizen abroad after 1876 belongs in the civil register B of Igis (events of citizens outside the commune). The StAGR holds the duplicates: CB VI 144/02 (1886–1895), 144/03 (1896–1904) and 144/04 (1905–1917), each "frei einsehbar" (free to consult in the reading room, not online). Their index, "Register 1876–1930", is in CB VI 144/06, which needs a permission request. The second source is the Igis Bürgerregister (family register, opened 1 Jan 1860), on StAGR films A I 21 b 4/111–112; sheets opened up to 1910 need permission from the cantonal Amt für Migration und Zivilrecht (AFM).
3. New Swiss records of Luzius (Amtsblatt des Kantons Graubünden, free PDFs on STAR):
   • 1856 emigration call (read on the image): "Da Luzius Hegnauer und Familie von Igis willens ist nach Amerika auszuwandern, wurde ihm der gesetzliche Auswanderungsruf bewilliget" (Zizers, 3 June 1856; GAB 1856/23, 6 Jun 1856, p. 167). It dates the family's departure to after early June 1856 and names the creditors' agent.
   • 1844 house mortgage (read on the image): Igis mortgage register, Pfandtitel no. 35, house "im Oberdorf, Untergasse", creditor Joh. Campell of Süs, debtor "Hegnauer Luzius, später Hegnauer Jakob", 300 gulden, 19 Dec 1844 (published in a 1903 revision of the register, GAB 1903/04, p. 44).
   • 1852 bankruptcy of "Lutzi Hegnauer jgr. von Igis" (read on the image; Zizers, 25 June 1852; GAB 1852/28, p. 229). Probably Luzius, but "jgr." implies an older Lutzi who has not been identified, so the link is only possible.
4. Missouri, Jasper and St. Clair County records: nothing for Luzius or Margreth.
   • Bates County tax books for 1877–1899 are not online for Pleasant Gap or Prairie Township, apart from Lone Oak Township 1888–90 and the delinquent and back-tax books.
   • The online Bates deed books end in 1886. Deed indexes for late 1884–1887 were read page by page (letter H) and show only Leonhard.
   • Bates probate: letters, bonds, notices of letters, and the indexes of will books 1–4 (to 1906) show no Hegnauer estate. The Jasper County probate index (1841–c. 1910, letter H) has no Hegnauer. St. Clair has no probate index after 1888.
   • Bates cemetery surveys have no Luzius or Margreth.
   • Pension payment cards: none for Luzius. There is no Union headstone application, and no soldiers'-home record in Missouri or Oregon.
5. Oregon: the Oregon Historical Records Index has only "Hegnauer, C" (1895 state census, Marion County) and Christian's 1935 death. There is no Luzius or Margreth.
6. Side finds.
   • A Bates release deed of 31 Dec 1884, read on the image: Jacob Kamm and Christian Hirschi of Madison County, Illinois, release to Leonhard Hegnauer their interest under a trust deed of 1 Jan 1874 on the S½ SW¼ of Sec. 36. This shows Susanna's father Christian Hirschi (H0169) alive and signing on 31 Dec 1884.
   • A deed of 9 Jul 1886 from Cyrus Rush to Leonard Hegnauer (index only).
   • About 45 Igis Hegnauer notices of 1799–1906, including the death of Margreth Hegnauer-Disch in Igis in October 1905 (H1035; the newkoch tree says 1908).
   • Four 1799 Helvetic Republic dossiers in which Christian Hegnauer (H0157) acts as a municipal official of Igis.
7. The next decisive record is the Igis civil register B, deaths, 1890–1907 (StAGR CB VI 144/02–04). It is free to consult in Chur. It needs either a look-up request to the Staatsarchiv (owner) or a visit, and the index CB VI 144/06 (by permission) would find the page at once. After that:
   • the Igis Bürgerregister sheet of Luzius's family (A I 21 b 4/111–112, AFM permission);
   • the NARA pension file (invalid certificate 638,825), whose drop report would give the date of death;
   • the Bates County Recorder's copy of the quitclaim of March 1890 ("Leonard Hegnauer et al to John Kamm"), which is not online.

2. Search log

A1. The newkoch tree (Ancestry member tree 207846516, read-only)

• List of all people, filtered "Hegnauer": ancestry.com/family-tree/tree/207846516/listofallpeople?name=Hegnauer&rows=100. The owner shows as "thomaskoc". There are 94 people; the list is kept below as leads (§6), not as occurrences.
• Luzius, person 382726133345:

  • The death fact's edit panel was opened: there is no description, no source citation, no media and no comment.
  • The gallery has no media and the sources panel has no sources. The LifeStory page reads "He died in 1895 having lived a long life of 76 years", a sentence Ancestry generates from "AFT 1895".
• Margreth, person 382726133346: birth 27 Feb 1819 Igis; death "1897", no place and no source. Her parents are entered as Johannes Bernet (1780–) and Dorothea Grest (1780–).
• "Igis church records" is a source listed under "Other sources" (title only; opening it shows no citation detail). It is attached to:
  • Jakob Hegnauer, person 382726092216: b. 7 Jun 1824 Igis; m. 29 May 1859 Mastrils Catharina Speitz; m. 7 Nov 1875 Mastrils Margrath Disch (1833–1908); daughters Christina (1863–1885) and Katharina (1877–); d. 24 Jul 1887;

  • The facts for Luzius and Margreth have no source at all.
• Earlier generations (leads for Batches C and D):
  • Jakob (1783–1858), person 382726084580: parents "unknown"; m. 18 Oct 1808 Christina Pleisch; children Ursula (1809–1809), Christian (b. 2 Aug 1810), Leonhard (b. 14 Jun 1812), Maria (1815–1815), Elsbeth (1815–1888), Luzius (1819–"1895") and Jakob (1824–1887).
  • Christian Hegnauer, person 382726187655, "BEF 1768", married to Ursula Nadig (382726187656). The only child entered is Elisabeth, b. 3 May 1785, d. 3 Jan 1858 Igis, m. 31 Mar 1807 Johannes Riedberger (1784–1869); their children are Ursula (1807), Johannes (1809–1880), Christian (1812–1888), Anna (1817–1893), Elisabeth (1820–1820) and twins of 1829 (d. 1829). Jakob (1783) is not linked to Christian × Ursula in this tree.
  • Nutt Hegnauer, person 382726130263: no parents; m. 23 Dec 1806 Igis Luzia Luzi; sons Christian (1807–1830) and Peter (1812–"AFT 1880"). There is no Nutt × Madlena couple in the tree.
• Verdict: the tree gives no evidence for either death. Its "AFT 1895" may be an estimate made after the Jakob and Elsbeth deaths of 1887–88.

A2. Igis registers: which record could hold a death abroad

FamilySearch catalog.

• Catalog 217323, "Kirchenbuch", Evangelisch-Reformierte Kirche Igis (familysearch.org/en/search/catalog/217323), is filmed on two reels:
  • film 1192919, items 4–5 = DGS 8014188: Taufen 1617–1738 and 1740–1812, Heiraten 1616–1740 and 1743–1812, Tote 1617–1736 and 1742–1812;
  • film 1192920 = DGS 8195990: "Taufen, Konf., Tote, Heiraten 1812–1860; … 1801–1887; … 1837–1876".
• The other Igis catalog subjects are "Public records" (Gemeindeakten, 1474–1852) and "Taxation" (1 title). The place "Landquart" has no titles.
• There is no Familienregister, Bürgerregister or civil register for Igis in the catalog.

FamilySearch index, DGS 8195990 (hr/v2 persona search; q.filmNumber=008195990):

• deaths 1887–1890: of 300 records fetched, the only one after 1886 is Christian Eggenberger, d. 11 Feb 1887, bur. 13 Feb 1887 (6F8D-SHLN; not a Hegnauer);
• baptisms 1887: 8 entries, the last 19 Jul 1887 (Thanas Gasser, 6F8Z-MNCJ);
• marriages 1880–1887: the index entries carry no dates.
• So the church books on FamilySearch stop in 1887, and there is no Igis burial register after February 1887 online. The images are viewable only at a FamilySearch Center.

Staatsarchiv Graubünden (StAGR).

It names only three articles by Cyril Hegnauer in the Davoser Revue (1990, 2009), which are about Monstein. Two Krättli items are relevant to the Krattly in-laws (§6).
• Bürgergemeinde Landquart, "Die Igiser Bürgergeschlechter" (bglandquart.ch/die-igiser-buergergeschlechter.html), entry Hegnauer, read in full:
  • "Stammeltern" 1 Jakob Hegnauer (d. 1858) and Christine Pleisch of Luzein (d. 1862); 2 Jakob Hegnauer and Maria Ladner; 3 Nutin Hegnauer and Luzia Lutzi. Their son Peter (b. 1811) married Anna Berry of Trimmis in 1833 and emigrated to America in 1872.
  • Christian Hegnauer was elected Geschworener in 1803.
  • Adolf Georg Hegnauer, son of Georg Hegnauer and Elsbeth Flütsch "oder der Anna Berri", married in 1919 at St. Giles, London, and renounced his Igis citizenship in 1924.
  • "Dieses Bürgergeschlecht ist ausgestorben."
  • Luzius is not mentioned.
• STAR full-text search (staatsarchiv-findsystem.gr.ch/home, API /home/api/Data/Search). Each hit on "Hegnauer" was opened and its PDF read in the text layer (§3.2). The searches were:

  • "Lutzi Hegnauer": 1 file (GAB 1852/28);

  • "Hegn*": 256 files; the ones outside the Hegnauer set are other words (Hegner, Hegnau and so on) or OCR noise in church-book finding aids;

  • "Hegnauer-Bernet", "geb. Bernet", "Luzi Hegnauer", "Lucius Hegnauer": 0.
  • The Amtsblatt did not normally print deaths abroad, and no Amtsblatt notice of Luzius's or Margreth's death, estate or heirs was found, 1856–1917.

• Every Hegnauer tax entry found names Leonard/L. Hegnauer (Leonhard, H0003):

• Luzius appears in no tax list, under any spelling. In 1880 he lived in his son Christian's household in Prairie Township, so he probably owned nothing taxable in his own name.
• The one-year window the plan hoped for cannot be had online. The Pleasant Gap and Prairie personal-property books for 1880–1899 are not filmed. They may survive at the Bates County Collector's office or the Missouri State Archives.

A4. Bates County deed books

• Catalog 217904, "Deed records, 1839–1930; abstract and index of deeds, 1839–1887" (42 reels; familysearch.org/en/search/catalog/217904).
  • The digitized deed books end with v. 72–73 (DGS 7902097), whose last deed, at image 655, is of Feb 1886.
  • The abstract and index volumes run to 1887: v. 1–2 (DGS 7896710), 3–4 (8194232), 5–7 (8194233), 8–10 (8194234) and 11–12 (8194235).
• (a) The quitclaim of March 1890 ("Leonard Hegnauer et al to John Kamm, und[ivided] interest in se ¼ sec 27 twp 39 r 30"; Butler Daily Democrat, 21 Mar 1890) falls after the last online book and index. Its grantors can only be read at the Bates County Recorder of Deeds, Butler, or on reels not yet digitized.
• (b) Deeds by or to Luzius or Margaret:
  • Index DGS 8194235 (deeds filed c. Dec 1884–1887) was read page by page for the letter H: grantor index images 46–53; grantee index images 145–153; "Direct" (grantor) index images 258–265; "Inverted" (grantee) index images 371–379.
  • The only Hegnauer entries are Leonhard's two deeds of 1884 and 1886 (below).
  • Full-text searches of all Bates deeds and indexes under the spellings in A3, "Lucius", "Luzi", "Margaretha", "Margaret" and "Mrs." found no deed by or to Luzius or Margaret. The earlier index volumes (1868–1884; DGS 8194232–8194234) were not read page by page; that is left over (§5).
• (c) Leonhard's land. The online Bates deed records that name him are:
  • Hammer–Hegnauer deeds and quitclaims, 1869–1872, already cited as batesft (O04085) and its pages;
  • Release deed, 31 Dec 1884, read on the image. Bates County Deed Record Book 71, pp. 539–540 (DGS 8194217, images 612–613; 3:1:3Q9M-CSLF-ZSFD and 3:1:3Q9M-CSLF-ZSH7):
    • "Release Deed. Know all men by these Presents: That We Jacob Kamm & Christian Hirschi of the County of Madison and State of Illinois for and in consideration of One Dollar … do hereby convey release and quit claim unto Leonhard Hegnauer of the County of Bates and State of Missouri all right title, interest, claim or demand whatsoever we or either may have acquired in, through, or by a certain Trust Deed, bearing date the first day of January A.D. 1874 and recorded in the Recorder's Office of Bates County … in Book 9 [?] of Page 179 to the premises therein described, as follows, to wit: The South One half of the South West quarter of Section number thirty Six of Township Number Thirty Six [sic] in Range Number Thirty …";

    • acknowledged before John Plattner, Notary Public, Madison County, Illinois;
    • "Filed on the 9 Mch 1885 at 6 P.M., J. R. Simpson Recorder, by D. W. Simpson DR".
    • Indexed in DGS 8194235, grantee index image 149 (3:1:3Q9M-CSLX-YSCG-J): "Hagenaur Leonhard | Jacob Kamm Etal | Q.C.D. | Dec 31 [1884] | [filed Mar] 9 [1885] | Book 71, p. 539 | S½ SW¼ Sec. 36, Twp 36 [sic], Rge 30".
    • "Township Thirty Six" is outside Bates County (Townships 38–42). The 1877 atlas and 1895 plat put Leonhard's home farm in Sec. 36 of Pleasant Gap Township, so T39N is probably meant.
  • Warranty deed, Cyrus Rush to Leonard Hegnauer, dated [July] 9, 1886, filed [July] 18, 1886, Book 75, p. 171, N½ NW¼ Sec. 6, T38, R29. Index only: DGS 8194235, inverted index image 374 (3:1:3Q9M-CSLX-YSC6-C). Book 75 is not online.

A5. Probate: Bates, Jasper and St. Clair

Bates County ("Missouri, Probate Records, 1750–1998", collection 2399107; catalog "Administrators, executors, guardian's bonds and letters, 1854–1914" and related titles). The index pages were read for the letter H:

• Letters of administration and testamentary v. 4, 1875–1904: DGS 7630639, index image 14 (3:1:3QS7-99LM-3DJV).
• Administrator's bonds and letters v. A (1871–1892); executor's bonds and letters testamentary v. A (1881–1905): DGS 7630636, index images 14 (3:1:3QS7-89LM-3N18) and 341 (3:1:3QS7-89LM-3NDY).
• Notices of publication of letters of administration and letters testamentary, vol. 1, 1877–1912: DGS 7630674, index image 268 (3:1:3QS7-99LM-S7M8). This is the best single negative: every Bates estate opened 1877–1912 should have a notice here.
• Record of wills v. 1–3, 1843–1898: DGS 7630633. The indexes are at images 7ff. (v. 1; image 14 read), image 146 (v. 2, H: Hauser?, Hughes, Hubbard, Harbert, Hall, Hale, Hiett, Heinz, Harris, Helling, Hine, Humphries, Henry, Hollett, Haskins, Hipple, Hussey, Harryman, Henry, Hake [?], Hall) and image 395 (v. 3, H: Hise [?], Hill, Humphrey, Huber, Hall, Hamilton, Hunt, Hess [?], Hensley). There is no Hegnauer.
• Record of wills v. 4, 1898–1906: DGS 7630634, index images 10 (3:1:3QSQ-G9LM-399N-8) and 13. There is no Hegnauer estate. L. Hegnaner appears only as a witness to John P. Kamm's will.

• Verdict: no Bates estate for Luzius or Margreth, 1877–1912.

Jasper County (Christina Krattly lived at Carthage from 1872; John Hegnauer at Webb City in 1900):

• Index to probate records v. 1–2, 1841–1924, DGS 7630811 (405 images).

• "Bates County, Missouri cemetery records", DGS 8359733 (1,089 images), typescripts compiled by Mrs E. J. Kling of Butler (DAR), 1955–58.
  • Images 1028–1033 (3:1:3Q9M-CSY6-B9CT-4, -B9CY-1, -B9HV-5, -B9HK-J, -B9CY-4, -B9HN-G) cover the German Reformed ("Reform") Church and cemetery north-west of Prairie City, pp. c. 45–50. They were read line by line on the images.
    • Page 48 (image 1030, B9HV-5) has "Leonhard Hegnauer April 25 1843 Switzerland Oct 31 1916 (son of Lucius and Margaret (Bernet) Hegnauer)". It also lists John Peter Kamm (1822–1903), Fred Kamm (1859–1950) and Fredericka, Anna M. Kamm (1891–1898) and Rosa Kamm (1878–1892).
    • Image 1033 (B9HN-G) has the church history: "Members were A. Hammer and wf – Leonard Hegnauer and W[f]. Christopher Hegnaur – Peter Kamm and wf."
    • There is no Luzius, Lucius, Margreth or Margaret, and no Emil or Margaret M. O04087 calls image B9HV-5 a "(1924 survey)". The date 1924 is FamilySearch's reading of a burial on the page; the survey is Kling's of the 1950s.

    • "Mary Hegnauer 1851–1885" (Martin's wife, H0040);

The dates are exactly those of Mary Christina Hegnauer (H0009), wife of Fred Hammer. "Grob" is unexplained; it may be a typist's slip.

A7. VA pension payment cards, 1907–1933 (FamilySearch collection 1832324)

• The searches were:
  • surnames Hegnaner, Hegenauer, Hageneur, Hegenaner, Hagenauer, Hagnauer and Hegnaur;
  • Hegeman with L*; Hegemann;
  • given names Luzius, Luzi* and Lucius with H*;
  • L* with Heg*; L* with Hag*n*r; Lucius and Luc* with Heg*.
• Results: only Leonhard's cards, K64R-X2S (his death 31 Oct 1916) and K64R-X2Q / K6CZ-VPD (his widow Susan K., closed at her death 12 Feb 1918). They are on DGS 4693173, images 137–140, which were read. The index's "Hegnaner" hits are Hegney and Leonhard.
• There is no card for Luzius. The cards begin with payments made in 1907, so a pensioner still on the rolls in 1907 should have one. Their absence points to death, or removal from the rolls, before 1907. It is not proof: the card series has gaps.

• Full-Text (Bates) for "Margaretha" (7 hits: a Bodenburg deed of 1871, Melchior Tachs's executrix of 1888, the 1918 Fuhrman stone); "Margreth"; "Margaret Hegnauer" (2: the county history and Kling p. 48, both naming her as Leonhard's mother); "Mrs Hegnauer", "Mrs Hegnaner", "Hegnauer widow", "Hegnaner widow" and "Hegnaner Margaret". No deed, tax or probate entry names her, as widow or otherwise.

Other sweeps (Missouri Full-Text, Bates)

The full list of Bates Full-Text pages naming a Hegnauer spelling (61 pages) was read in the machine text; the new ones are proposed in the JSON (§8). None of them is Luzius or Margreth. One entry is ambiguous:

• The sale bill of the Peter Grob estate (probate appraisals and sale bills 1877–1887, 3:1:3QS7-99LM-W36L) records "L. Hegnaner yearling steer". Leonhard was one of the estate's appraisers (3QS7-99LM-W3XX, 1886), so he is the likely buyer. But Luzius lived in Prairie Township in 1880 and 1884, and "L." fits him too. This is proposed as H0003, possible.

Translation: "As Luzius Hegnauer and family of Igis intend to emigrate to America, the statutory emigration call has been granted to him. Creditors as well as debtors of the said Hegnauer are therefore called upon to submit their accounts to the receiver, Herr Joseph Barfuß the younger, in Igis, within the legal period of 8 weeks. Zizers, 3 June 1856. The district office of the Five Villages. Approved by the Small Council, 6 June 1856."

• The index for 1856 (GAB 1856/R) has "Hegnauer, Lutzi u. Familie, Igis 167".
• There is only one Luzius Hegnauer of Igis with a family in 1856, and this notice fits the family's arrival in America later in 1856.

• Luzius married in 1840 and had children baptized at Igis in 1840–1851, so a house mortgage in 1844 fits him.
• "Später Hegnauer Jakob" probably means his brother Jakob (b. 1824, H1032), who took over the house. The register also shows "Jakob Hegnauer de Jakob" as owner of a house, stable and yard in Igis in 1874 (below).
• The link to Luzius is probable: it assumes no second Luzius Hegnauer of house-owning age at Igis in 1844.

Translation: "Following the declaration of insolvency of Lutzi Hegnauer the younger, of Igis, the district court of the Five Villages has opened bankruptcy proceedings against him …"

• The 1852 index (GAB 1852/R) has "Hegnauer, Lutzi, jgr., Igis".
• Luzius (then 32) is the only Luzius Hegnauer of Igis known to the study for 1852.
• "jgr." (junior) implies an older Lutzi Hegnauer, but no such man is known. The known elder Hegnauers of the period are his father Jakob, Nutt/Nutin, Johann Heinrich and Peter.
• The bankruptcy, the house passing to Jakob, and the creditors' call on emigration in 1856 fit together. The link stays possible until the elder Lutzi is ruled out.

• Registers of the Amtsblatt (GAB 1850/R, 1852/R, 1854/R, 1856/R, 1865/R, 1868/R, 1869/R, 1871/R, 1873/R, 1880/R, 1883/R, 1902/R, 1906/R, 1928/R). They index the notices above. GAB 1872/R also has "Hegnauer Peter und Familie" (page reference not legible in the text layer), probably the notice of Peter's emigration to America in 1872 (Bürgergemeinde), which was not found in the full text. That is a lead.
• Landesberichte des Kantons Graubünden. These are STAR snippets only; the pages were not opened:

The only adult Christian Hegnauer known at Igis in 1799 is H0157 (c. 1749–1825), whom the Bürgergemeinde also names as Geschworener in 1803. The named entries are therefore probable and the unnamed ones possible. The documents themselves were not opened; they are at the StAGR (§5).

4. Verdicts

• Luzius's death: unknown. Still "after 15 Jul 1890". There is no record of it in Bates, Jasper, St. Clair or Oregon, in any online probate, tax, deed, cemetery or veterans' source, and none in the Graubünden Amtsblatt.
  • The newkoch "d. 1895" is an unsourced estimate. It should be dropped as a lead, or kept only as "family tree, unsourced".
  • The absence of a VA payment card (cards begin in 1907) makes a death after 1907 unlikely but does not prove one before.
• Margreth's death: unknown. Still "after 1884". There is no widow's entry of any kind.
  • The March 1890 quitclaim by "Leonard Hegnauer et al" of an undivided interest to John Kamm may be a deed by heirs. Luzius was then alive, so if it is an heirs' deed the deceased owner would more likely be Margreth or someone outside the couple. It must be read before anything is inferred.
• Luzius in Switzerland, 1844–1856: strengthened. He owned, or mortgaged, a house in the Oberdorf at Igis in 1844 (probable). He may have gone bankrupt in 1852 (possible). He was granted the emigration call in June 1856 (confirmed).

5. What remains

Decisive, and possible only through the owner (money, letters or a visit; §5 of the plan):

1. StAGR, CB VI 144/02–04, Zivilstandsregisterdoppel Igis 1886–1917, register B (deaths of citizens elsewhere). These are free to consult in the reading room (Karlihofplatz, Chur). Ask the Staatsarchiv (info@sag.gr.ch) whether a death of Luzius Hegnauer (b. 1819) or Anna Margreth Hegnauer-Bernet (b. 1819) was registered, 1890–1917. If the index CB VI 144/06 ("Register 1876–1930") is opened, by request, the entry can be found at once.
2. The Igis Bürgerregister, films A I 21 b 4/111–112: a written, reasoned request to the StAGR, approved by the AFM, for the family sheet of Luzius Hegnauer × Anna Margreth Bernet (opened 1860 or later; a death abroad may be noted there).
3. NARA, the pension file for invalid certificate 638,825: the drop report or last payment date.
4. Bates County Recorder of Deeds, Butler: the quitclaim "Leonard Hegnauer et al to John Kamm", recorded about March 1890, SE¼ Sec. 27, T39N, R30W. List every grantor, and check whether it says the grantors are heirs. Also Book 75 p. 171 (Cyrus Rush, 1886) and the chain of title of SE¼ 27-39-30.
5. Bates County Collector: the personal-property tax books for Pleasant Gap and Prairie Townships, 1880–1899 (not filmed).

6. Leads for other batches (not occurrences)

• Batch D: the newkoch tree gives Christian Hegnauer × Ursula Nadig one child, Elisabeth (b. 3 May 1785, d. 3 Jan 1858, m. 1807 Johannes Riedberger), which matches H0223. The 1852 Igis guardianship list has "Lisabeth Riedberger, geb. Hegnauer und Tochter Anna". The tree does not link Jakob (1783) to Christian.
• Batch C: the newkoch tree has no Nutt × Madlena couple. Its Nutt (d. after 1806) × Luzia Luzi is H0221 × H0226.
• Batch F (Bernet): GAB 1865/16, p. 136: at Untervaz, trustees were named "für das hierländische Vermögen der Kinder des in Amerika verstorbenen Herrn Joh. Bernet" (St. Bernet and Anton Krettli). A Johannes Bernet who died in America before April 1865, with children and property at Untervaz, needs identifying. Is he a relative of Margreth?
• Krattly in-laws: the StAGR holds "Amerikabriefe von Peter und Georg Krättli" (Krättli of Untervaz; IV 25 e 2), Georg Krättli's (b. 1819) correspondence (IV 25 e 2), and M. Krättli, Auswanderung aus Untervaz während des 19. Jahrhunderts (1995; RK 205). Peter Krattly was a creditor of Luzius and Margaretha in Gasconade County in 1860, and Christina married Sylvester Krattly in 1869. The letters could mention the Hegnauers.
• Batch H (Hirschi):
  • The 1884 release deed shows Christian Hirschi (H0169) living, in Madison County, Illinois, on 31 Dec 1884, with Jacob Kamm, as a lender to Leonhard under a trust deed of 1 Jan 1874.
  • The Bates deed indexes also show "Hirschi Friedrich, executor" and "Hirschi Frederick et al by Shff" (1885–87), "Hirschi Gottlieb" and "Hirni Christian".
• H0408 Adolf Georg: the Bürgergemeinde says he married in London in 1919 and renounced his Igis citizenship in 1924. His lost Heimatschein no. 213 was cancelled in 1902.
• H1035 Margreth Disch: she died in October 1905 at Igis (GAB 1906/02). The newkoch tree's "1908" is wrong.
• newkoch dates for Igis people, all unsourced and to be checked against the registers:

H1032 Jakob (b. 1824): a house, stable and yard in Igis, mortgaged to the Armenbehörde, 16 Mar 1874 (Fr. 700; cancelled 1906). Probably the "later" debtor of Luzius's 1844 house mortgage. He was dead by October 1905, when his wife was a widow; the newkoch tree says 24 Jul 1887.

• Most rows are keyed by source and citation (source_site "staatsarchiv-graubuenden", "familysearch-fulltext" or "ohri"). One row is a FamilySearch persona (ark FFB9-S6Y).
• Every row was checked against data/occurrences.csv: no URL in the file is already an occurrence or listed as a "more pages" ARK of one.
• Modern Swiss commercial-register names are kept to the name, year and notice (possibly living people).
• Grades and reasons are in each row's notes. Dry run on 27 Sep 2026 (python tools/add_occurrences.py data/raw/batch-A-2026-09-27.json --dry-run): "dry run: 81 rows would be added" (81 rows, no errors, no duplicate keys). Not applied.
