Jakob Hegnauer was baptised on 5 September 1783 at Igis, a village in the Rhine valley of Graubünden, Switzerland, and he died there in July 1858.^1–2 So far as the records show, he spent his whole life in Igis. His son Luzius took his own wife and children to America in 1856, and it is through Luzius that Jakob's line reached Missouri.^3–5

Early life

Jakob was the son of Christian Hegnauer and Ursula Radig, who had married in the Igis church in January 1777.^{1, 6} He was the fourth of their seven known children. Agatha was baptised in 1777, Nutt in 1779 and Christian in 1781; after Jakob came Elisabeth in 1785 and two more boys, Christian in 1789 and Christian in 1791, both again given their father's name.^7–12 None of the three Christians lived long. A Christian Hegnauer aged about three was buried in June 1784, when Jakob was nine months old, and a baby Christian in September 1789; both were very probably Jakob's brothers. The youngest was buried on 22 May 1791, the day after his baptism.^13–15 Jakob's elder brother Nutt stayed in Igis too, and died there in 1854.¹⁶

Jakob was born into the old Free State of the Three Leagues, in which Igis was one of the Four Villages (Vier Dörfer), a self-governing jurisdiction of the League of God's House.^17–18 That old order ended while he was in his teens. From late 1798 to 1800 Graubünden was a battleground in the war between France and its enemies, occupied twice by Austrian and twice by French troops; in 1799 it was joined to the Helvetic Republic as the canton of Raetia, and in 1803, when Jakob was nineteen, it became a canton of the Swiss Confederation.¹⁸

Marriage and family

On 18 October 1808 Jakob married Christina Pleisch in the church at Igis.¹⁹ Christina was a citizen of Luzein, in the Prättigau, the valley that opens onto the Rhine valley at Igis.^20–21 Over the next sixteen years they brought seven children to the Igis church for baptism: Ursula on 16 March 1809,²² Christian on 2 August 1810,²³ Leonhard on 14 June 1812,²⁴ Maria on 23 January 1815,²⁵ Elsbeth on Christmas Day, 25 December 1815,²⁶ Luzius on 8 December 1819³ and Jakob, the youngest, on 7 June 1824.²⁷ The names echo both families: Ursula and Christian, the eldest daughter and son, bear the names of Jakob's parents, and Leonhard and Maria those of Christina's parents, Leonhard Pleisch and Maria Nett.²⁸

The year after Elsbeth's Christmas baptism brought hunger. Switzerland suffered famine in 1816 and 1817,²⁹ and in Graubünden those lean years, like the food shortages of 1848–50, led many people to leave the canton for good.¹⁸

Later years

From the 1850s the United States was the favourite destination of emigrants from Graubünden.¹⁸ In 1856 Luzius joined them. With his wife and five of Jakob's grandchildren he sailed from Le Havre on the ship Chace on 22 August 1856 and reached New York on 29 September;^{4, 30} by 1860 the family was farming in Gasconade County, Missouri.⁵

Jakob died at Igis on 17 July 1858, aged about seventy-four, and was buried there three days later. The register of his burial names him, as his baptism had, the son of Christian and Ursula.² Less than a year later, on 29 May 1859, his youngest son, Jakob, married Katharina Spiess in the same church,³¹ and Christina died at Igis in September 1862, four years after her husband.²⁸

The register of Igis citizen families, as abstracted by the Bürgergemeinde Landquart, names Jakob and Christina as the founding couple of one of the village's Hegnauer families. The Hegnauers have since died out as citizens of Igis,²⁰ but through Luzius, Jakob and Christina's descendants carried the name on in America.⁵

His burial: The burial register (three index entries) gives his death on 17 Jul 1858, his burial on 20 Jul, a birth year of 1784 and his parents as Christian Hegnauer and Ursula Nadig. His baptism names Christian Hegnauer and Urs Radig; Nadig and Radig are two index readings of his mother's surname, so the burial is his.^{1, 2}
Mother's surname: Radig, Rodig and Nadig all appear in the index for the same woman; she was probably born Nadig (see her profile).
Wife's surname: Christina's maiden name is indexed as Pleisch, Plisch, Fleisch, Flaisch and Flüsch; the P/F variation is a reading error in the old script. Pleisch is a Luzein name: she was a citizen of Luzein, and her burial names her parents as Leonhard Pleisch and Maria Nett (see her profile).^{20, 28}
Children 1815: Maria (23 Jan 1815) and Elsbeth (25 Dec 1815) were baptised eleven months apart. That is possible, but the Maria entry should be checked against the register image.
1816–1819: No baptism of a child of Jakob and Christina is indexed between Elsbeth's (Dec 1815) and Luzius's (Dec 1819), a gap that spans the famine of 1816–17. Swiss famines were marked above all by a fall in births,²⁹ but a child born and buried in the gap could also be missing from the index; the register images should be searched.
The ship: The Chace is printed "Chase" on the passenger list, where the family is indexed as "Hegemann" (see Luzius's profile).⁴
Citizen family: The Bürgergemeinde Landquart's abstract of the Igis Bürgerregister lists Jakob (d. 1858) and Christine Pleisch of Luzein (d. 1862) as the first of three Hegnauer founding couples. It is a secondary source; the register itself has not been seen.²⁰
FamilySearch tree: a "Jacob Jost" (GBBG-LJK) is attached as a child of this couple. No Igis baptism supports this, and it should be reviewed.
