Life story
Igis and the Voyage
Christian Hegnauer was born on 18 February 1851 in Igis, Graubünden, Switzerland, and baptized there on 23 February. He was the youngest son of Luzius Hegnauer and Anna Margreth Bernet.1 His older brothers were John, Leonhard and Martin, and his older sister was Christina.
In 1856, when Christian was five, the family emigrated. They sailed from Le Havre on 22 August 1856 on the ship Chace (printed "Chase" on the passenger list) and reached New York on 29 September.2 The passenger list, dated the next day, gives the family as "Hegemann". Christian, 5, was the last of the seven.3 When he died nearly eighty years later, his obituary still recalled that he "came to the United States in 1856 when only five years old".4
Gasconade and Bates Counties
The family settled in Boeuf Township, Gasconade County, Missouri, in the German-speaking farm country near Hermann. In 1860 Christian, 9, was at home with his parents, his brothers and sister, and the baby Barbara, born in Missouri about 1859.5 His father Luzius and his brothers John and Leonhard served in the Union army during the Civil War, when Christian was only ten to fourteen (see their profiles).
By 1880 his parents too were in Bates County, on the Kansas border, where his brother Leonhard had settled in 1869 (see Leonhard's profile). In June 1880 Christian, a bachelor farmer of 28 (in fact 29), was listed as the head of a household in Prairie Township, with his aging parents and his sister Barbara. Next door lived Rudolf Stadler, 40, a Swiss-born man, with his family.6 On 25 March 1886 Christian, then of Papinville, married Elizabeth Stadler, also of Papinville. Her death certificate gives her birth as 3 September 1864 in Switzerland (see Research Notes), and she had come to America in 1879.7–8 They took out the licence at the county seat, Butler, and were married there the same day by the probate judge. The record notes that "Her Father appears and gives his consent."9–10
Salem, Oregon
By about 1891 the couple had moved to Oregon. Where they spent the first years of their marriage is not known, but Elizabeth's death certificate of 1947 says she had lived in the state for fifty-five years.7 A Christian Hegnauer, probably this man, is listed in the 1891 Salem city directory as a laborer living at 384 Centre Street.11 By late 1893 he was probably farming in rural Marion County. In December 1893 the county court dismissed a petition by "C. Hagnauer and others" for a county road near the A. Stanton donation land claim. A new petition went ahead in February 1894, and in April the court was dealing with damages on the "C. Hegnauer road". These items give only his initial, but no other Hegnauer is known in the county.12–14 He also bid for firewood contracts: in 1901 "Chris Hegnauer" offered to supply 35 cords of first-growth fir to the state insane asylum at Salem, and a Hegnauer had bid for the asylum's wood in 1895.15–16

In March 1899 the Salem paper reported that Christian had bought four lots of the Dorrance Fruit Farms, 37.43 acres, from the First National Bank of Salem for $500.17 The 1900 census found him and Elizabeth on the Salem and Silverton Road in Englewood Precinct. He was a farmer, owning the farm with a mortgage, and a naturalized citizen. They had been married fourteen years, and Elizabeth had borne no children.8 A Christian (1905) and a C. (1909) Hegnauer, probably he, appear on the Marion County tax lists.18–19
The Metolius Homestead
Some time before 1910 Christian took up a homestead on the high plateau of central Oregon, then part of Crook County. In May 1910 the census taker found "Christ" and "Lizzie" Hegnauer in Kutcher Precinct, in the Culver–Metolius district. He was 59 and farming on his own account, and the farm was his, free of mortgage. Elizabeth, still childless, was 46.20 On 10 October 1910 the General Land Office issued the patent for his homestead, the 160 acres of the southeast quarter of Section 29, Township 11 South, Range 13 East, near Metolius. The clerk spelled his name "Christ Hagnauer".21 Nine days later the sale of the old Salem farm was reported: "C. and E. Hegnauer" sold the Dorrance Fruit Farms lots to J. R. and E. Worden for $4,000, eight times what Christian had paid for them in 1899.22
Metolius remained the Hegnauers' home for the rest of their lives. The area became part of the new Jefferson County in 1914, and in 1917 "Christ Hegnauer" of Metolius was on its tax list.23 He was named among the surviving brothers in Leonhard's obituary in 1916, and he outlived all his brothers and sisters: Martin's obituary in 1927 named only Christina and Christian as surviving siblings, and when Christina died in 1934 her obituary named "a brother, Christ Hegnauer of Metolius, Ore."24–26 By 1930 he had retired from farming to the town of Metolius, where he owned a small house with a radio. He was 79, and his mother tongue was entered as German.27
Death
Christian died at Metolius early on 20 February 1935, aged 84, of heart disease after several years of arteriosclerosis.28–29 His funeral was held at Metolius on Saturday, 23 February, and he was buried in the Methodist Cemetery there.4, 28 Elizabeth gave his parents' names to the registrar as "Luciero" Hegnauer of south-east Switzerland and Margaret Bernet.28 Elizabeth lived on at Metolius. She died on 7 January 1947, while in Portland, and was buried beside him under a shared flat marker that reads "CHRIS 1851–1935".7, 30–32 They had no children; her obituary named only her three sisters as survivors.20, 30

The Igis baptism register (three FamilySearch index entries) gives birth on 18 Feb and baptism on 23 Feb 1851, with parents Luzius Hegnauer and Margreth Bernet. His Oregon death certificate, made 84 years later with his wife as informant, gives the same day (2-18-1851) and names the same parents, and the 1900 census gives Feb 1851, Switzerland. His age fits on the 1856 passenger list (5) and in the 1860 (9), 1910 (59) and 1930 (79) censuses; the 1880 census (28) is a year low. Find a Grave's 2 Feb 1851 has no stated source and is not on the stone, which gives the years only.

The Hegemann family of seven on the Chase fits the Igis family in given names, birth order and every age. His 1910 census answer (1856) and his obituary ("came to the United States in 1856 when only five years old") agree. The 1900 census and, probably, the 1930 census give 1855. The ship reached New York on 29 Sep 1856 (New York Herald and New-York Daily Tribune, 30 Sep 1856); NARA and Ancestry date the list 30 Sep.

The Bates County marriage licence record gives the licence and the ceremony at Butler on 25 March 1886 (image read). The compiled index agrees. The couple's census answers fit exactly, married 14 years in June 1900, 24 years in May 1910, and his age at first marriage 35 in 1930.

The surname is rare, no other Hegnauer is found in Oregon before 1905, and Christian is documented in Salem and Marion County from 1893 to 1910. His wife's death certificate (1947) says she had lived in Oregon 55 years, that is since about 1891–92. The only known namesake in America, his nephew Christian Hegnauer (1868–1957), son of Leonhard, had married in Bates County in 1886 and was farming in Pleasant Gap Township in 1900; the Igis Christians of Peter Hegnauer's family (baptized 1851 and 1858) are not known to have emigrated. Identified as probable, from name and place.

Hagnauer is also a separate Swiss surname, but the BLM has no other Oregon patent under it, and no other Hegnauer or Hagnauer is known in central Oregon.

The Igis baptism register (three FamilySearch index entries) gives birth on 18 Feb and baptism on 23 Feb 1851, with parents Luzius Hegnauer and Margreth Bernet. His Oregon death certificate, made 84 years later with his wife as informant, gives the same day (2-18-1851) and names the same parents, and the 1900 census gives Feb 1851, Switzerland. His age fits on the 1856 passenger list (5) and in the 1860 (9), 1910 (59) and 1930 (79) censuses; the 1880 census (28) is a year low. Find a Grave's 2 Feb 1851 has no stated source and is not on the stone, which gives the years only.

Arrived at New York on the ship Chace (printed "Chase" on the passenger list), which had sailed from Le Havre on 22 Aug 1856, with his parents, three brothers and his sister. The passenger list, dated 30 Sep 1856, gives him as "Christian Hegemann", 5, the youngest of the family.
The Hegemann family of seven on the Chase fits the Igis family in given names, birth order and every age. His 1910 census answer (1856) and his obituary ("came to the United States in 1856 when only five years old") agree. The 1900 census and, probably, the 1930 census give 1855. The ship reached New York on 29 Sep 1856 (New York Herald and New-York Daily Tribune, 30 Sep 1856); NARA and Ancestry date the list 30 Sep.

The Bates County marriage licence record gives the licence and the ceremony at Butler on 25 March 1886 (image read). The compiled index agrees. The couple's census answers fit exactly, married 14 years in June 1900, 24 years in May 1910, and his age at first marriage 35 in 1930.

The surname is rare, no other Hegnauer is found in Oregon before 1905, and Christian is documented in Salem and Marion County from 1893 to 1910. The only known namesake in America, his nephew Christian Hegnauer (1868–1957), son of Leonhard, had married in Bates County in 1886 and was farming in Pleasant Gap Township in 1900; the Igis Christians of Peter Hegnauer's family (baptized 1851 and 1858) are not known to have emigrated. Identified as probable, from name and place.

- Birth date: 18 Feb 1851 (Igis baptism register; his death certificate; Feb 1851 in the 1900 census). Find a Grave and some online trees give 2 Feb 1851. The gravestone gives the year only, so 2 Feb has no known source, and it is rejected. Ancestry's index to his Oregon death certificate (Oregon State Deaths) gives birth "1857", a misreading of the certificate's 2-18-1851; the separate Oregon death index gives no birth date.
- Birthplace: One Ancestry member tree gives "Schnottwil, Solothurn" with no source. It conflicts with the Igis baptism, and the same tree makes the same error for his brothers and sisters.
- Immigration year: 1856 (passenger list, the 1910 census and the obituary). The 1900 census gives 1855, and the 1930 figure is unclear (probably 1855).
- Naturalization: The 1900, 1910 and 1930 censuses all mark him naturalized. He came as a child, so he may have become a citizen through his father, but no record for either has been found. His homestead case file should contain proof of citizenship.
- No children: Elizabeth was the mother of no children in 1900 and 1910. Her 1947 obituary names only sisters, and his own obituary names no survivors.
- 1870 census: Not found (Missouri and Swiss-born searches, 1851 ± 2). His family's 1870 whereabouts are still unknown (see his parents' profiles, Luzius and Anna Margreth).
- 1886–1891: Nothing is known of the couple between the marriage and the 1891 Salem directory.
- 1920 census: Not found, despite index searches in Oregon and a page-by-page reading of the index transcriptions for Jefferson County E.D. 85 (Kutcher and Metolius precincts, including the town), which have no Hegnauer and no Swiss-born man of 66–72. His 1910 neighbours are there, as are Joe C. and Anna Rich (Mrs. Joseph Rich was one of Elizabeth's sisters). The couple may have been away for the winter or missed.

- Find a Grave on FamilySearch: FamilySearch's Find a Grave index places his burial at "Methodist Hill Cemetery, East Plainfield, Plainfield, Sullivan, New Hampshire", a wrong standardization of Methodist Hill Cemetery, Metolius. FamilySearch's BillionGraves index gives the same stone ("Chris Hegnauer", 1851–1935) with the place standardized as Madras, Jefferson County.
- The 1895 Bates County plat: The "C. Hegnauer 80" beside Leonhard's farm in Pleasant Gap Township is almost certainly Leonhard's son Christian (born 1868), who married in Bates County in 1886, was a Pleasant Gap delegate ("Chris Hegnauer") in March 1896 and farmed in Pleasant Gap Township in 1900. This Christian was living in Oregon by 1891, though a Bates County holding kept after the move cannot be ruled out until the county deed records are searched. The "C. Hegnauer ... of Prairie" in Butler on 9 June 1892 is probably the same nephew.
- Marion County tax lists: Ancestry indexes further Salem-directory entries for 1905, 1907, 1908, 1909, 1910 and 1911 that have not been opened. The 1909 list gives his post office as Salem, although a homestead patent in 1910 implies that he had been living on his Crook County claim for some years; the post office may be the mailing address for the Marion County land. A page Ancestry files under 1905 is headed "Polk's Marion County Tax List 1911" and gives "Hegnauer Christian, $3400, Salem". That is after the Oct 1910 sale. It may have been compiled from the 1910 roll, before the sale ($3,400 is close to the $4,000 sale price), but it is not used until explained.
- Elizabeth's age and father: Her death certificate and the 1900 census give 3 Sep (Sep) 1864. The gravestone and Find a Grave give 1865. At the 1886 marriage her father gave his consent, which suggests the clerk believed her under eighteen, and that does not fit an 1864 birth. Her death certificate gives her father only as "unknown Stadler". Rudolf Stadler, 40, the Swiss neighbour in 1880, was probably her father, but his household in 1880 has not been read in full.
- Family portrait: A photograph of Leonhard's family shared on Ancestry is described as coming from a Stadler relative in Switzerland and calls Leonhard "the brother-in-law of Elizabeth". That fits Elizabeth (Stadler) Hegnauer, so the portrait probably passed down in her Swiss Stadler family.
- Other Oregon Hegnauers: Leonard Hegnauer, the agronomist at Oregon Agricultural College from about 1910 (probably of Leonhard's line), and the New York-born family of Edward J. Hegnauer of Portland (1927–1950) are not this man.
- Open question, homestead: The homestead case file (NARA, RG 49, The Dalles serial 03149) should give the entry date, his proof testimony and his naturalization. His move to central Oregon falls between the 1901 wood bid and May 1910, probably about 1905.
- Open question, the Salem farm: The Marion County deeds of 1899 and 1910 and the Dorrance Fruit Farms plat would locate the farm; the A. Stanton donation land claim may locate the earlier farm of 1893–94.
- Open question, the 1935 obituary: The Madras Pioneer of February 1935 is not on Newspapers.com and may have a fuller obituary.
- Open question, his mother's death: A member tree's claim that his mother Margreth died on 6 Mar 1897 at "Brienz, Canton Bern" has no source (see her profile).
