Life story
Igis
Georg Hegnauer was born at Igis, Graubünden, Switzerland, on 5 January 1846 and baptised three days later, the seventh child of Peter Hegnauer and Anna Berri. He was given the name of an elder brother, Georg, who had died as a baby in 1840.1
St. Gallen (probable)
Georg is probably the Georg Hegnauer, born in 1846, whose mother was Anna Berri, who married Elisabeth Flütsch at Lichtensteig in the Toggenburg, canton St. Gallen, on 19 November 1878.2 A Georg Hegnauer and Elisabeth (Elsbeth) Flütsch then had five children baptised in the city of St. Gallen: Anna Dorothea (born 2 October 1879), Klara Meta (born 29 December 1880), Adolf Georg (born 20 August 1882), Laura Elwira (born 6 October 1884) and Dora Elis (born 21 February 1886).3–7 Klara Meta died on 24 November 1891, not quite eleven years old.8
If this identification is right, Georg made his life in eastern Switzerland while his parents and several of his brothers and sisters went to America. Nothing later is known of him.

- Sources: FamilySearch's index of the Swiss Reformed church records; none of the images has been viewed.
- Identification (probable): The Lichtensteig marriage index gives the groom's birth as 1846 and his mother as Anna Berri, which fits this Georg exactly, but gives his father as "Joh" rather than Peter.2 "Joh" may be a misreading, or an abbreviation written in the register; the image should be read. The link between the Lichtensteig groom and the St. Gallen father rests on the names of the couple (Georg Hegnauer and Elisabeth Flütsch) and the dates.
- Not his nephew: His nephew Georg, son of Nutt, was born in 1867 and could not be the groom of 1878.
- Mother's name in 1891: The burial of Meta Klara names her mother "Emma Flütsch"; this is probably a misreading, since every baptism gives Elisabeth or Elsbeth.8
- Leads: the St. Gallen civil registers (Zivilstandsamt) from 1876, which will name his birthplace and parents; the Igis Bürgerregister, which should record his marriage and children as Igis citizens; an Otto Hegnauer, born 1885, son of an Elisabetha Hegnauer, married at Lichtensteig in 1911 (FamilySearch 66V6-35SQ) and may belong to this family.
