Life story
Igis
Christian Hegnauer was born at Igis, Graubünden, Switzerland, on 8 April 1858 and baptised on 18 April, the thirteenth and youngest child of Peter Hegnauer and Anna Berri. His mother was then in her forties. He was given the name of a brother, Christian, who had died as a toddler six years before.1 He was fourteen when his father emigrated to America in 1872, and probably went with his parents.
Marriage and a moving family
On 1 May 1884 Christian married Nellie (Cornelia) Conzett in Cook County, Illinois, the county of Chicago. She had been born in Iowa, of a family whose name, Conzett, is itself from Graubünden.2–3 The young family moved often. Their daughter Ruth Anna was born about 1886, and Alma was born on 21 September 1887 at Portsmouth, on the Ohio River in Scioto County, Ohio.4–5 By the early 1890s they were at Columbus: a son, Walter Norman, born in July 1891, was buried there in Green Lawn Cemetery that December, and Wilbur Conzett was born at Columbus on 3 April 1893.6–8
Mansfield
By 1906 the Hegnauers had settled in Richland County, where Ruth Anna married Clinton Clyde Balliett that March.4 In 1910 the census found Christian, about fifty-two, at Mansfield with Cornelia and their two younger children, Alma and Wilbur.3 Alma married Rufus K. Esselburn in Richland County in November 1917; both daughters' marriage records name their parents as Christian Hegnauer and Cornelia Conzett.9
Christian died at Columbus on 17 February 1926, aged sixty-seven. His death record names his parents as Peter Hegnauer and [Anna] Berry. Two days later he was buried in Mansfield Cemetery, where Cornelia was also buried in 1943.10–12

His Ohio death record names his parents as Peter Hegnauer and Berry and his birthplace as Switzerland. The contemporary baptism register is preferred to the later dates.

- Wife's name: Nellie Conzett at the marriage (1884); Nellie "Boudett" at Alma's birth (1887); Cornelia M. "Coucett" (1906), Cornelia Conzett (1917, 1929) and Cornelia "Couzett" (1926, 1948) in the children's and his own records. Boudett, Coucett and Couzett are misreadings of Conzett.
- Walter Norman (probable son): Find a Grave's Walter Norman Hegnauer (17 Jul – 9 Dec 1891, Green Lawn Cemetery, Columbus) is taken to be a son of Christian and Cornelia: they are the only Hegnauer family known in Columbus at the time, their son Wilbur was born there in 1893, and the birth falls between Alma (1887) and Wilbur. No record naming his parents has been seen.6
