Igis

Anna Hegnauer was born at Igis, Graubünden, Switzerland, at the end of January 1844 (one index of the register says 1843) and baptised on 1 February, the sixth child of Peter Hegnauer and Anna Berri.1

In June 1865, aged twenty-one, she married Johann Joseph Frick. The marriage was entered both at Igis and at nearby Zizers.2 A son, Arnold, was baptised at Igis on 18 June 1865, only days after the wedding, and was buried the following February.3 A daughter, Judith, was baptised at Igis on 11 December 1870.4

Burlington, Iowa

Some time after 1870 Anna and her husband, too, went to America; when they left has not been found. They settled at Burlington, Iowa, where her sister Maria, Mrs. Adam Adank, also lived. There their daughter Judith married William Fredrick Schaley on 24 May 1893, the record naming her parents as John Frick and Anna Hegnauer.5

Anna Frick died in Iowa. Her county death record names her father as Peter Hegnauer; its date has not yet been read.6

    Of three indexes of her Igis baptism, one gives born 28 Jan 1843 and baptised 1 Feb 1843, one born 28 Jan 1844 and baptised 1 Feb 1844, and one born 28 Jan 1843 and baptised 1 Feb 1844. Her marriage entry at Zizers in June 1865 computes her birth as 1844, which fits an age of twenty-one and a birth in Jan 1844, not Jan 1843. 1844 is preferred until the image is read.

The couple is named at the baptisms of two children at Igis (1865, 1870), and their daughter Judith's marriage at Burlington, Iowa, in 1893 names her parents as John Frick and Anna Hegnauer.

  • Sources: The Swiss records are from FamilySearch's index of the Reformed parish registers; the Iowa records are FamilySearch index entries. No images have been viewed.
  • Year of birth: The three baptism indexes give born 28 Jan 1843, bapt. 1 Feb 1843; born 28 Jan 1843, bapt. 1 Feb 1844; and born 28 Jan 1844, bapt. 1 Feb 1844. A baptism a year after the birth is unlikely, so one index has a year wrong. The Zizers marriage index computes 1844 (age twenty-one in June 1865), which fits Jan 1844, and a birth in 1844 also spaces her evenly between Maria (Oct 1841) and Georg (Jan 1846). 1844 is preferred; the image should settle it.1, 2
  • Arnold: baptised 18 Jun 1865, five to seven days after the marriage as indexed; he was presumably born before it. The burial index misreads his father's name as Arnold.3
  • Death: The Iowa county death record's date and county are not in the study's extract; read it (principal's entry linked from FamilySearch record QVJP-23X9).6
