Igis and Gasconade County

Martin Hegnauer was born on 20 February 1848 in Igis, Graubünden, Switzerland, and baptized there the next day. He was the fourth of the six children of Luzius Hegnauer and Anna Margreth Bernet.1–2 His brothers and sisters were John, Leonhard, Christina, Christian and Barbara. In 1856, when Martin was eight, the family sailed from Le Havre on 22 August on the ship Chace (printed "Chase" on the passenger list) and reached New York on 29 September.3 The passenger list, dated the next day, writes them all as "Hegemann".4 They settled in Boeuf Township, Gasconade County, Missouri, where the 1860 census found Martin, twelve, on his father's farm.2 His obituary says that he was too young to enlist in the Civil War and stayed at home to help provide for his mother and the younger children while his father and two of his brothers, Leonhard and John, served in the Union army (see their profiles).5 The censuses of 1900, 1910 and 1920 all record him as naturalized, and the 1920 census gives the year as 1868, although he did not turn 21 until February 1869 (see Research Notes).6–8

Marriage and St. Louis

According to his obituary, Martin married Mary Gambler at St. Joseph, Missouri, in 1875; no record of the marriage itself has yet been found.5 Mary had been born about 1851 in Pennsylvania to a Swiss-born father, and her mother, Katharina Gambler, lived in St. Joseph.9–10 The couple made their home in St. Louis, where Martin worked as a laborer. The city directories of 1877 and 1878 list him at 604 South Second Street, as "Haegnauer" and "Hegnah".11–12 In June 1880 the census taker found the family next door at 602 South Second Street: Martin, 32; Mary, 29, keeping house; and their daughters Lizzie, 4, Margaret, 3, and Bertha, 2.9 Their four children were all born in St. Louis: Elizabeth ("Lizzie") about 1876, Margaret ("Maggie") on 15 June 1877, Bertha about October 1878, and Martin Jr. on 28 January 1884.5–6, 13–14

Pleasant Gap and Prairie City

In 1885 Martin took his family west to Pleasant Gap Township in Bates County, where his brother Leonhard had farmed since 1869 and where his parents had been living in 1884 (see their profiles).5 That August, only months after the move, Mary died, aged about 34.5, 15 She is almost certainly the Mary Hegnauer (1851–1885) whose gravestone stands in the Prairie City Cemetery.15 Martin never remarried.7, 16 Ten years later, Mary's mother remembered "the children of my deceased Daughter Mary Hegnauer ... Lizzie, Margareth, Bertha and Martin" in the will she made at St. Joseph.10

Martin farmed rented land in Pleasant Gap Township. In 1900 Bertha, 21, and Martin Jr., 16, were still at home.6 While he lived there he attended the Zoar Reformed Church north of Prairie City, although he never formally joined a church.5 In September 1908 "Martin Hegnauer of Prairie City" and his daughters Mrs. Troy Brown and Lizzie Johnson visited relatives at Carthage, evidently the family of his sister Christina Krattly, who farmed near there.5, 17

Rockville

In 1910 Martin bought a farm about two miles outside Rockville and moved there.5 That year's census shows him owning it free of debt, with his widowed daughter Lizzie Johnson, a dressmaker, living with him.7 In 1916 he was among the surviving brothers named in his brother Leonhard's obituary.18 By 1920 Maggie and Martin Jr., both unmarried, were living with him on the farm.8 In 1924 Martin Jr., "who lives with his father", was taken to the Rich Hill hospital for an appendicitis operation.19 Maggie died in May 1926.13

Death

Martin was in his usual health when he went to bed on Saturday, 26 March 1927. The next morning his daughter Lizzie, now Mrs. A. J. Harden, who kept house for him, found him unconscious, and he died soon afterwards, aged 79. The death certificate gives the cause as organic heart disease. It names his parents as Lucius Hegnauer and Margaret Barnet [Bernet] of Switzerland, an independent American record that ties the Missouri family to the Igis baptisms. His daughter Bertha, Mrs. Brown of Appleton City, gave the information.5, 16 The funeral was held at his home on Monday afternoon, 28 March, conducted by Rev. Swann, and was attended by many old neighbors from around Prairie City and by relatives from Rich Hill and Carthage. He was buried in the Rockville Cemetery beside Maggie.5, 16, 20 A monument was put up for him there that spring.21–22 He was survived by his sister Christina Krattly, his brother Christian in Oregon, his daughters Lizzie and Bertha, his son Martin Jr., and two granddaughters, Arlene and Wilma Brown.5

    The Igis baptism register (three index entries) records birth 20 Feb 1848 and baptism the next day, parents Luzius Hegnauer and Margreth Bernet. His 1927 death certificate and his obituary give the same birth date and name his parents as Lucius Hegnauer and Margaret Barnet (obituary "Van Barnett"). His ages in 1856 (8), 1860 (12) and 1880 (32), and "Feb 1848" in 1900, agree.

    Arrived at New York on the ship Chace (printed "Chase" on the passenger list), which had sailed from Le Havre on 22 Aug 1856, with his parents and four siblings. The passenger list, dated 30 Sep 1856, gives him as "Martin Hegemann", 8.

    The manifest lists the seven members of the Igis family by name, birth order and exact ages; Martin, 8, fits his Feb 1848 birth. The ship reached New York on 29 Sep 1856 (New York Herald and New-York Daily Tribune, 30 Sep 1856); NARA and Ancestry date the list 30 Sep. His own answers in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 censuses all give 1856. His obituary's 1854 is a late secondary statement and is outweighed (see Research Notes).

  5. 1868 Naturalisation proven

    The 1920 census gives 1868 as the year of naturalization; the 1900 and 1910 censuses mark him naturalized. His obituary says he "became naturalized in his early manhood". He was only 20 in 1868, so the year may be approximate or reflect citizenship derived from his father.

    Only the 1920 census gives a year, and it fits the obituary's "early manhood". But he turned 21, the minimum age for naturalizing in his own right, only in Feb 1869. An 1868 date therefore means either an approximate recollection or citizenship derived, as a minor, from his father's naturalization (Luzius, a Union veteran discharged in 1863, could have naturalized under the 1862 act for discharged soldiers). No naturalization record has been found for either man, so the year rests on the 1920 census, whose informant is not recorded.

    Married Mary Gambler at St. Joseph (obituary). Mary was born about 1851 in Pennsylvania to a Swiss-born father; her mother was Katharina Gambler of St. Joseph.

    His 1927 obituary, written from information sent by his son-in-law Dr. Troy Brown, says he "was married to Mary Gambler in St. Joseph, Mo., in 1875". It is a late, secondary account, but its details are independently confirmed: Katharina Gambler of St. Joseph named "my deceased Daughter Mary Hegnauer" and Mary's four children in her will (1895), and the 1880 census shows Martin and Mary with a daughter Lizzie aged 4. No marriage register entry has been found yet.

    The directory spelling is unusual, but the same man is at the same address in 1878, and the 1880 census has Martin and Mary with their daughters next door at 602 South Second Street. Maggie's death certificate places her birth in St. Louis and names her father Martin Hegnauer of Switzerland. It gives 15 June 1878, but her stated age there computes to 15 June 1877, and her sister Bertha was born in Oct 1878 (see Research Notes).

    The obituary gives the 1885 move. Maggie's 1926 death certificate (informant apparently her sister Lizzie Harden) gives 41 years' residence at Rockville, which also points to 1885. The family actually lived in Pleasant Gap Township until 1910, so the certificate's figure evidently counts their years in the district, not in Rockville itself.

The Carthage relatives were evidently his sister Christina Krattly's family, who farmed in Marion Township near Carthage. The place is read from a damaged line ("Pr[airie] City"); his obituary calls his Pleasant Gap home "his old home vicinity near Prairie City".

    Funeral Monday afternoon at his home, conducted by Rev. Swann; buried beside his daughter Maggie. Family monument "HEGNAUER" and flat marker "MARTIN HEGNAUER 1848–1927"; a new monument for him was reported in May 1927.

    The death certificate gives Rockville Cemetery, 28 Mar 1927. The obituary and the Sedalia Democrat's Rockville column both place the funeral on Monday (28 Mar); a separate line in the obituary's column says his daughter Mrs. Troy Brown attended it "Tuesday", which is outweighed (see Research Notes). The Appleton City Journal reported a new monument for him there in May 1927; which of the two stones it was is not stated. The Find a Grave memorial has matching dates and photographs of both stones.

Research notes

  • Wife's maiden name (resolved): Gambler. The 1895 will of Katharina Gambler of St. Joseph leaves $20 to "the children of my deceased Daughter Mary Hegnauer viz: Lizzie, Margareth, Bertha and Martin Hegnauer"10. These are exactly Martin's four children, in birth order. The obituary independently says he married "Mary Gambler" at St. Joseph in 18755, and Maggie's death certificate gives her mother as "Mary Gambler" (the best reading of the handwriting), born in Pennsylvania13. An Ancestry family tree's "Marie Genmpler" and Find a Grave's "Marie Gempler" (said to come from Bertha's death certificate no. 2502, not yet seen) are probably other spellings of the same name. Mary's father was born in Switzerland9, so a Swiss original form is possible. The will names Mary's siblings as Mrs. Elizabeth Karrasch, Bertha, John and Wm. Gambler.
  • Marriage date and place: The 1875 date and the place, St. Joseph, rest on the 1927 obituary alone, written from his son-in-law's information.5 The marriage itself is well supported (Katharina Gambler's will and the 1880 census), but no register entry has been found; see the open questions below.
  • Mary's death and burial: The obituary gives August 1885, in Pleasant Gap Township5. The Prairie City memorial for Mary Hegnauer, 1851–1885, aged 3415, is accepted as hers. The stone names no husband, so the identification rests on the name, the dates (her age of 29 in 1880 and the obituary's 1885) and the place; no other Mary Hegnauer of that age is known in Bates County. No death record or notice has been found (Ancestry's Missouri death records have no 1885 Bates County entry for her).
  • Arrival: The obituary says he came with his parents in 1854 and settled first at Highland, Illinois, before moving to Gasconade County5. The contemporary Chase manifest (list dated 30 Sep 1856)4, his own census answers (1856 in 1900, 1910 and 1920) and the 1860 census in Gasconade County outweigh it. Leonhard's 1916 obituary also says the family settled first in Gasconade and went to Madison County, Illinois, only in 186518.
  • Mother's name: Bernet in the Igis registers; "Barnet" on his death certificate16; "Van Barnett" in the obituary5; "Varnet" in the Find a Grave memorial text.22 The obituary's "one of six children" is correct.
  • Naturalization: The 1920 census gives 1868, and the obituary says he was naturalized "in his early manhood". He turned 21, the minimum age for naturalizing in his own right, only in February 1869. The year is therefore either approximate or reflects citizenship derived, while he was a minor, from a naturalization of his father, who was discharged from the Union army in 1863 and could have naturalized under the 1862 act for discharged soldiers. No record has been found for either man.
  • Death place: Some online trees give Pleasant Gap; Ancestry's index of the certificate gives only Bates County. The death certificate itself says Rockville Township16, and the obituary says he died at his home near Rockville, bought in 19105. Rockville Township is accepted.
  • Funeral day: The obituary says the funeral was held on Monday afternoon, the Sedalia Democrat's Rockville column says relatives attended it "Monday"20, and the death certificate gives burial on 28 Mar 1927, a Monday. A separate line in the same Appleton City Journal column says Mrs. Troy Brown and family attended her father's funeral "Tuesday"5. Monday is accepted.
  • 1920 census: It marks him married ("M"). He had been a widower since 1885, and the 1900 and 1910 censuses and his death certificate all say widowed.
  • Children's birth years: Maggie's death certificate gives 15 Jun 1878, but her stated age (48 y 11 m 12 d) computes to 15 Jun 1877, and Find a Grave has 1877. Her age in 1880 (3) fits 1877, while her age in January 1920 (41) points to 1878. A June 1878 birth is ruled out because her sister Bertha was born in October 1878 (1900 census)6, so 1877 is accepted. Lizzie was 4 in June 1880 and 34 in April 1910, so she was born about 1875–76. Find a Grave's 1877 (Elizabeth Hegnauer Harden, 1877–1947, memorial 142891193, linked from his memorial22) is less likely, since Maggie was born in June 1877.
  • Surname spellings in his records: Hegemann (1856), Haegnauer (1877), Hegnah (1878), Gignorer (1880 index; the image may read "Gignoer"), Haganauer (1910; the index also has Hagmanier and Hazawar).
  • Member tree: One Ancestry member tree gives his birthplace as Schnottwil, Solothurn, which the Igis register contradicts. It also merges Maggie and Bertha into one "Margaret Bertha (Maggie)". Both claims are rejected.
  • Open questions: (1) The 1875 marriage record: Buchanan County marriage books, not indexed on Ancestry under any spelling tried. (2) The 1870 census: not found (try St. Joseph and St. Louis). (3) The St. Louis directories of 1876 and 1879–1885: he is not under Heg- in 1880, so try G- and other spellings. (4) The naturalization record, about 1868 (Gasconade or St. Louis courts), or whether he derived citizenship from his father. (5) Mary's death record, and any 1885 Bates County guardianship or probate for the children. (6) The 1910 deed for the Rockville farm (Bates County deed books). (7) The Rockville Leader of 31 Mar 1927, which is not on Newspapers.com. (8) The Gambler family of St. Joseph: Katharina's death (between 1895 and 1912) and the family's origin (Mary born about 1851 in Pennsylvania; a John Gambler of St. Joseph, born about 1864 in Wisconsin, may be her brother).
