Igis

Nutt Hegnauer was born at Igis, in the Rhine valley of Graubünden, Switzerland, on 30 March 1834 and baptised there the next day. He was the eldest child of Peter Hegnauer and Anna Berri, and he was named after his grandfather, Nutt Hegnauer.1 He grew up the eldest of thirteen brothers and sisters, four of whom died as small children.

Marriage and family

In 1856, when he was twenty-one, Nutt married Anna Barbara Bühler at Igis; one index of the register gives the date as 10 February 1856.2 Their first child, Matthäus, was born on 3 May 1856 and baptised a week later.3 A daughter, Luzia, who bore the name of Nutt's grandmother and of his sister, was born in October 1859 but lived only three weeks.4–5 A second daughter, born in February 1862, was given her father's name as Nutina, and a son, Georg, followed in January 1867.6–7

The baptism of Georg in February 1867 is the last record of Nutt that the study has found.7 Whether he stayed at Igis when his parents and several of his brothers and sisters left for America has not been established.

    All four indexes give the marriage of Nutt (Nuttin) Hegnauer, son of Peter Hegnauer and Anna Berri (Berrÿ, Berer), and Anna Barbara Bühler at Igis in 1856; one gives the date as 10 Feb 1856 and computes the groom's birth as 1835. The same couple is named at the baptisms of four children at Igis from 1856 to 1867.

Research notes

  • Sources: Every record here is from FamilySearch's index of the Igis Reformed parish registers ("Switzerland, Catholic and Reformed Church Records"); none of the images has been viewed. Some entries give the place only as "Schweiz", but their FamilySearch record numbers belong to the same series as the Igis entries, so they are taken to be Igis entries.
  • Name: Nutt and Nuttin (Nutin) are forms of the same name, which his grandfather also bore. One index of his marriage gives the groom as "Lehner Nuttin"; the word may be a misread occupation (Lehrer, schoolteacher) or a misreading of the name. Only the image will tell.2
  • Birth: 30 Mar 1834 in one baptism index, 31 Mar in the other; the marriage index computes 1835.1, 2
  • Children: Matthäus was born less than three months after the marriage as indexed; the date of the marriage should be checked on the image.3 The son Georg born in 1867 is not the Georg Hegnauer who married at Lichtensteig in 1878 (he would have been eleven); that Georg is probably Nutt's brother Georg, born 1846.
