Switzerland: origins and parishes

This page follows the Hegnauer name through Switzerland: the village it comes from and that village's parish, the old families of Elgg and Seengen, the branch at Uster, and the family at Igis from which the emigrants of 1856 and 1872 descend. Almost everything here rests on FamilySearch's index of the Swiss church books. The register images can be seen only at a FamilySearch Center or affiliate library, and few have yet been read, so details may still change.¹

Hegnau and Volketswil

Hegnauer means "the person from Hegnau". Hegnau is a village between Zürich and Uster, now part of the municipality of Volketswil.² It is first recorded about 1150, as Hegenowa, and its name means "Hagino's land by the water".³ It is the only settlement of the name in Switzerland, and the name books derive the surname from it.⁴ The village has a page of its own: Hegnau: The Place Behind the Name.

The name began as a description. In 1281 a man was written "C. dictus Hegenower", and in 1282 a man at Pfäfers was "Albertus dictus Ischener et dictus Hegnower", dictus meaning "called".⁵⁴ By the later 1300s the name passed from father to son: at Baden, in Aargau, Wilhelm, son of Johannes von Hegnau, was von Hegnow in 1399 and "Wilhelm Hegnöwer" in 1413.⁶ In the city of Zürich a "Johans Hegenower" was taxed in 1366, and by 1467–1470 there were Hegnauer households in the city, at Wangen and at Hegnau itself, where Herman Hegnauer lived with his wife and their son Wilhelm.⁷ A family of lords named after the village, "those of Hegnau", were probably ministeriales of the Counts of Rapperswil in the 13th century.² The Dictionnaire historique et biographique de la Suisse treats them and the Hegnauers of Baden and Zürich as one family, but says that it is not known whether they are related to the Hegnauers of Elgg and Seengen.⁸ No record joins any later Hegnauer family to them.¹

The Hegnauers who stayed nearest the village are found in the church book of Volketswil, the parish Hegnau belongs to. Volketswil became a parish in its own right in 1638; until then its villages belonged to the parish of Uster.² The book begins in 1588, and the first Hegnauer in it is Hans, son of Clinhans Hegnauer, baptised on 25 July 1590.⁹¹⁰ Felix Hegnauer and Elsbeth Wolfensberger had children baptised there from 1603, and Hans Jacob Hegnauer and Barbara Ochsner from 1605. Their sons were very probably the Andreas Hegnauer who married Anna Eberhart in 1634 and the Marx Hegnauer who married Cleophe Isler in 1637.¹¹¹²¹ In the next generation Rudolf Hegnauer married Verena Fürer in 1666, and a Rudolf Hegnauer born in 1641 was buried there in 1699, perhaps the same man.¹³ In all, about twenty Hegnauer households appear in the book. The last man of the name is Hans Jacob, born in 1706 and buried on 27 April 1736. After him the Hegnauers of Volketswil appear only as the mothers of children of other names, the last in 1801.¹⁴¹ Where the family went after 1736, or whether it simply died out there, is not yet known.

Elgg

Elgg, in the north-east of canton Zürich, about 20 km from Hegnau, has the oldest continuous Hegnauer family in the church books. Its first entry is the baptism on 3 September 1553 of Anna, daughter of Hans Hegnauer and Margreta Wister.¹⁵ Within three years four more Hegnauer couples had married at Elgg: Jacob Hegnauer and Anna Knobel on 15 July 1554, Blasius Hegnauer and Otylia Nussberger on 27 January 1555, Hans Hegnauer and Anna Petter on 15 June 1555, and another Hans Hegnauer and Elsa Furer on 9 February 1556.¹⁶ Yet another Hans Hegnauer and his wife Salome Peter had daughters baptised from 1558. Brosshans Hegnauer had a son by his first wife, Madalena, in 1561, and married Barbara Rugger on 13 August 1564.¹⁷ How these men were related to one another is not recorded, because no Elgg marriage entry before 1700 names the groom's father.¹

The clerks' spelling changed over the years. The name is Hegnoüwer or Hegnouwer in the 1550s, and for some decades around 1600 the index has the family as "Hegner". The same couples appear under both forms: Brosshans and Barbara are "Hegnouwer" at the baptism of their twins in 1570 and "Hegner" at their daughter Ursula's in 1573.¹⁸ Elgg is one of only two places where Hegnauers held a citizenship from before 1800.¹⁹ In the 1600s Hans Jacob Hegnauer married Elsbeth Stadelmann in 1656, and Andreas Hegnauer married Margreth Brännwald in 1669.²⁰²¹ From Elgg the family spread into the neighbouring Thurgau parishes of Aadorf, Aawangen and Sirnach and, very probably, to Uster.¹

Uster

Uster was the old parish of Hegnau and the other villages of today's Volketswil.² The first Hegnauer in its registers is Anna, the wife of Uli Glaz, whose son was baptised there on 24 August 1647.²² The later Uster family very probably came from Elgg. Hans Heinrich Hegnauer, the son of a Peter, married Dorothea Meyer at Uster on 26 September 1730.²³ He was very probably the Hans Heinrich baptised at Elgg on 16 February 1701, son of Peter Hegnauer and Esther Trachsler,²⁴ and his father was probably the Peter baptised at Elgg on 14 January 1672, son of Andreas Hegnauer and Margreth Brännwald.²⁵²¹ After 1751 the chain breaks. The Uster couples of the later 1700s are of the right age to descend from Hans Heinrich, but no record names their parents.¹

Seengen

Seengen, on Lake Hallwil in canton Aargau, is the second old Hegnauer citizenship, and Hegnauers of Seengen later became citizens of Aarau, Basel, Mettmenstetten and Zürich.¹⁹ The Seengen church books are not on FamilySearch, so the family is known from records kept elsewhere. Aargau Hegnauers married in the Reformed church at Baden from 1813,²⁶ among them Luise, daughter of Jakob Hegnauer and Verena Siegrist, who married Rudolf Buchli in 1869.²⁷ In 1884 her father, a farmer of fifty-eight, left for America with several of his children, and the family settled at Rochester, New York; one of the sons later gave "Sengen, Aargau" as his birthplace.²⁸²⁹ Hegnauers were at home in that part of Aargau by the 1850s. In 1856 a collector of Aargau legends told of a lost town called Hegenau that was said to have given its name to the Hegnauers of the Kulm valley, a few kilometres west of Seengen; no such town is recorded.³⁰ No record links the Seengen family to Elgg, Volketswil or Igis.¹

Igis

Igis lies in the Rhine valley of Graubünden, about 90 km from Hegnau, and had been Reformed since 1532.³¹ Its church books begin in 1616, and no Hegnauer appears in them until 1 March 1715, when Jacob Hegnauer, written "Hagenauwer", married Margreth Hartmann.³²³³ Hagenauwer is the Igis pastor's way of writing Hegnauer, not the sign of another origin: within Jacob's lifetime the register moves towards Heg-, and from 1744 it writes the family Hegnauer.³⁴³⁵ Margreth was buried in February 1724, and that June Jacob married Leta Gujan.³⁶³⁷

Jacob seems not to have come alone. Elsbeth Hegnauer, very probably his sister, married Conradin Michel at Igis in 1717 and was probably the "Elsbeth Michlener" buried there in 1759, aged sixty-nine; she named a son Hans Heinrich in 1723.³⁸³⁹⁴⁰ A Hans Heinrich Hegnauer, probably an adult, was buried at Igis in 1729, and in 1734 Jacob, too, named a son Hans Heinrich.⁴¹³⁴ Where they came from is not recorded. The family's given names (Hans, Jacob, Elsbeth, Hans Heinrich), the spelling and Jacob's Reformed marriage all point to the Zürich area.¹ The study has three candidates, none better than possible: a son of Hans (Heinrich) Hegnauer and Elsbeth Bosshart, who married at Volketswil in 1684 and had children baptised at Elgg in 1689 and 1691; Hans Jacob, baptised at Elgg in 1686; and Jacob, baptised at Volketswil in 1682.⁴²⁴³⁴⁴

Jacob's sons Nuttin, baptised in 1725, and Hanss Heinrich, baptised in 1734, were very probably the heads of the two Igis families of the later 1700s.⁴⁵³⁴ Nutt and his wife Madlena Krädtli had children baptised at Igis from 1746, and Christian Hegnauer, who married Ursula Radig in 1777, was probably their son Christen, baptised in December 1748.⁴⁶⁴⁷ From Christian on, the registers name every link. His son Jakob (1783–1858) married Christina Pleisch of Luzein, and their son Luzius, baptised on 8 December 1819, took his wife Anna Margreth Bernet and their children to Missouri in 1856.⁴⁸⁴⁹⁵⁰ Jakob's brother Nutt was the father of Peter, who emigrated in 1872.⁵¹⁵²⁵³ In 1803 a Christian Hegnauer was elected a Geschworener, a member of the communal council, and by 1854 the Hegnauers were one of the citizen families of Igis. That citizen family has since died out.⁵³

Elsewhere in Switzerland

Hegnauers appear early in several other places: at Fehraltorf, close to Hegnau, in 1548 and 1550, if the index has read the name correctly; among the Catholics of the Lucerne Seetal from 1584; at Kleinhüningen, near Basel, in 1607; and at Bern from 1673.^54555657 No record yet joins any of them to the families above.¹

Open questions

• One origin or several? Only Elgg and Seengen are old Hegnauer citizenships.¹⁹ Both lie within 40 km of Hegnau,¹ but a name meaning "from Hegnau" could be given to several unrelated people, and the tax books already show several Hegnauer households in 1467–1470.⁷ A Y-DNA test of a direct male-line Hegnauer from each of Elgg or Uster, Seengen and Igis is the one test that could tell.
• Where did Jacob of Igis come from? The register images that could decide it are those of his marriage in 1715 (Igis, DGS 8014188, image 159), of the Igis burial of 1729 (image 225), and of the Volketswil entries of 1682 and 1684 (DGS 8120584, images 356 and 430). All can be seen only at a FamilySearch Center or affiliate library.^32414442 The Zürich population registers of about 1690–1715 (Bevölkerungsverzeichnisse, Staatsarchiv Zürich, E II 700), which list each household and often note members living away, may show a family at Elgg or Volketswil with a son gone to Graubünden.¹
• What became of the Volketswil Hegnauers after 1736? The same population registers should show it.¹⁴
• The lords of Hegnau. The Dictionnaire historique says that the family left its castle before 1553, settled in the village as farmers, and is found at Fehraltorf in the 1600s. This account of the 1920s needs checking against the Volketswil and Fehraltorf registers before anyone relies on it.⁸
• Elgg before 1700. The households of the 1550s cannot yet be joined to one another or to the Elgg couples of 1698–1740.¹
• Seengen. The Seengen registers, at the Staatsarchiv Aargau, should hold the baptisms and marriages of the family before it left in 1884.¹
