Igis

Anna Berri was born about 1815 in Graubünden, Switzerland. The register of Igis citizen families remembers her as Anna Berry of Trimmis, a village a few miles up the Rhine valley from Igis towards Chur; her parents are not yet known.1–2 On 2 June 1833, in the church at Igis, she married Peter Hegnauer, the twenty-one-year-old son of Nutt Hegnauer and Luzia Luzi.3

A large family

For the next quarter of a century Anna's life was bound up with her children. Thirteen were baptised at Igis: Nutt (March 1834), named after Peter's father; Verena (July 1836); Luzia (May 1838), named after Peter's mother; Georg (April 1840); Maria (October 1841); Anna (January 1844, or 1843 in one index); a second Georg (January 1846); Margreth (February 1848); Peter (September 1849); Christian (December 1850); Christina (November 1854); Elsbeth (October 1856); and, when Anna was in her forties, a second Christian (April 1858).4–16

She buried four of them as infants and toddlers: Georg at five months in 1840, Margreth at six months in 1848, Peter in April 1851 and Christian in July 1852.17–20 The others grew up, and five of them married at Igis between 1856 and 1865: Nutt to Anna Barbara Bühler in 1856, Verena to Jakob Theurer, Luzia to Gabriel Steiner and Maria to Adam Adank in 1863, and Anna to Johann Joseph Frick in 1865. By 1870 Anna had grandchildren growing up in and around Igis.21–22

America

In 1872 Peter emigrated to America, and Anna, then in her late fifties, evidently went with him.2 In 1880 the census found them at Fountain City, a river town on the Mississippi in Buffalo County, Wisconsin: Peter, 68, and Anna, 65, both born in Switzerland.1 Their daughter Elsbeth, the wife of John Schamann, had had a son there in 1878.23 Two more daughters, Maria (Mrs. Adam Adank) and Anna (Mrs. Johann Joseph Frick), settled at Burlington, Iowa, further down the river, and their Iowa death records name their father as Peter Hegnauer.24–26 Her youngest son, Christian, raised his family in Ohio and died at Columbus in 1926; his death record gives his mother's name as Berry.27

Anna's own death has not been found. She was living at the 1880 census.1

    From her age in the 1880 census (the index computes 1815). The Bürgerregister abstract calls her "of Trimmis", which may be her birthplace or only her family's place of citizenship. Her baptism has not been identified.

    The 1880 census index gives Anna Hegnauer, wife of Peter, born about 1815 in Switzerland; no other record of her age has been read. Her marriage in 1833 and her last child in 1858 fit a birth about 1813–1816.

The Bürgerregister abstract is a secondary source, known from the study's notes.2 See her husband's profile and each child's profile for the evidence on the children; Christina (baptised 1854), of whom only the baptism is known, has no profile yet.14
  • Surname: Indexed Berri in her marriage (1833) and in her children's records to 1852, and as Berrÿ, Berry, Beri, Berÿ, Berr or Berer in later ones; ÿ is the old script's y, so the register may write Berrÿ throughout. The Bürgerregister abstract and her son's Ohio death record give Berry.3, 14, 15, 2, 27 Berri is used here until the images are read; Berry may prove the better form for her last name at birth.

Correct it rather than creating a duplicate. On 27 Sep 2026 the orphaned profile was adopted, corrected to Anna Berri (born about 1815, place unknown) and its last name at birth changed, so it is now Berri-16.
