Igis

Maria Hegnauer was born at Igis, Graubünden, Switzerland, on 13 October 1841 and baptised the same day, the fifth child of Peter Hegnauer and Anna Berri.1 She grew up in a large family: eight more children were born after her, and four of the thirteen died as small children.

In August 1863, aged twenty-one, Maria married Adam Adank. The indexes give three different days in August, because the marriage was entered in more than one register: at Igis, at Ardez and probably at Fläsch.2 Her sister Luzia had married two months earlier.

Children in Switzerland

Maria and Adam's first child, Anna, was baptised on 24 January 1864, Christian on 16 March 1865 and Maria on 4 January 1868.3–5 The indexes do not say in which parish.

Burlington, Iowa

Maria, too, went to America with her husband and children; when they left has not been found. By the late 1880s the Adanks were at Burlington, Iowa, on the Mississippi. There her son Christian (Chris) married Clara Rundorff on 16 August 1888, and her daughter Mary married Edmund Hellwig on 4 November 1890; both marriage records name Maria as the mother.6–7 Her sister Anna, Mrs. Frick, also lived at Burlington.

Maria Adank died at Burlington on 12 March 1922, aged eighty. Her Iowa death record names her father as Peter Hegnauer.8–9 Two of her sons also died in Burlington Township: George in November 1923 and Chris in April 1940.10–11

    Four FamilySearch index entries (the images have not been viewed): two place the marriage at Igis, on 2 Aug and on 30 Aug 1863; one gives 12 Aug 1863 with the place only as "Schweiz" (digital folder 8126175, a film of the Jenins, Zizers, Fläsch and Sur registers; probably Fläsch, the Adank parish); one gives Aug 1863 with the place "Schweiz", which FamilySearch standardizes as "Schwyz" (not the canton): its folder 8196022, image group 004, is the Ardez register (probable). The day is uncertain (see Research Notes).

    All four indexes give the marriage of Maria Hegnauer, daughter of Peter Hegnauer and Anna Berri (Berrÿ, Berry), and Adam Adank in August 1863. The couple is named as the parents at the baptisms of three children in 1864–1868 and in the Iowa marriage and death records of their children at Burlington from 1888 to 1940.

    WikiTree's profile of Marie May (Hegnauer) Adank, born 13 Oct 1841 (the date of Maria's Igis baptism) and linked to her husband Adam Adank, gives her death at Burlington on 12 Mar 1922 and cites a Find a Grave memorial. FamilySearch's index of Iowa death records, 1904–1951, has a death record for Mary Adank whose father is Peter Hegnauer, which fits. The death record itself should be read to confirm the date and place.

Research notes

  • Sources: The Swiss records are from FamilySearch's index of the Reformed parish registers; the Iowa records are FamilySearch index entries. None of the images has been viewed. The death date comes from WikiTree's data fields, which cite a Find a Grave memorial the study has not seen.8
  • Marriage date: Indexed as 2 Aug and 30 Aug 1863 at Igis, as 12 Aug 1863 with the place "Schweiz", and as Aug 1863 with the place "Schweiz" standardized by FamilySearch as "Schwyz" (not the canton Schwyz). The films identify the two unplaced entries (27 Sep 2026): the Aug 1863 entry is on digital folder 8196022, image group 004, image 99, which is the Ardez book of 1837–1875 on the Lower Engadine film 1192669 (probable). The Ardez entry also names Christian Adank and Anna Catharina Adank, probably the groom's parents. The 12 Aug 1863 entry is on folder 8126175, image 109. That film holds the Jenins, Zizers (Catholic), Fläsch and Sur registers, and its 864 Adank index entries point to Fläsch, the Adank family's parish (probable). So the marriage was entered at Igis (the bride's parish), at Fläsch (probably the groom's) and at Ardez, where the couple's first child was baptised. One of the dates may be the banns. The images should settle it.2
  • Children's parish: The indexes give only "Schweiz" for the three baptisms; FamilySearch standardizes Anna's as "Schwyz". The record pages settle it (27 Sep 2026). Anna's baptism (1864) is on folder 8196022, image group 004, image 56, the Ardez book (probable), and not in the Igis register as first thought. Christian's (1865, image 55) and Maria's (1868, image 64) are on folder 8126175, probably Fläsch, Adam Adank's home parish (see the marriage note).3, 4, 5
  • Emigration: Not found. Her son George was born about 1874, according to WikiTree, which would put the family in America by then. WikiTree's biography also places Maria in Wisconsin in 1870 and at Fountain City, Buffalo County, Wisconsin, in 1880, where her parents were living in 1880; these residences are not sourced there. A Wisconsin residence in 1870 would mean that the family left Switzerland between Jan 1868 and 1870. Check the 1870 and 1880 censuses of Buffalo County.8
  • Son Peter: WikiTree lists a son Peter Adank (1875–1942), citing "Illinois Deaths and Stillbirths, 1916–1947" (FamilySearch record N3NS-38F), in which his mother is Mary Hagenauer. The study has not seen this record; harvest it before creating a profile for him.8
  • Burial: Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington, according to WikiTree (Find a Grave memorial 102101412, not seen).8
  • WikiTree: Hegnauer-3 is this Maria; its father Hegnauer-26 is Peter Hegnauer and its mother, formerly "Mary Barry" (Barry-431), is now Berri-16, Anna Berri. The name "Marie May" is not in any record the study has seen.
  • Leads: the Iowa death record itself (date, place, age, informant); the 1880 census for the Adank household; Des Moines County, Iowa, naturalization records for Adam Adank; the 1885 and 1895 Iowa state censuses.
