Columbus and Mansfield

Wilbur Conzett Hegnauer was born at Columbus, Ohio, on 3 April 1893, the youngest child of Christian Hegnauer, an emigrant from Igis, Switzerland, and Cornelia (Nellie) Conzett, whose maiden name he carried as his middle name.1–2 In 1910 he was about seventeen and living with his parents and his sister Alma at Mansfield, Richland County.3

The First World War

Wilbur registered for the draft in 1917, giving his birth as 3 April 1893 at Columbus.1 He entered service at Franklinton, Columbus, on 25 May 1918, appears on monthly muster rolls through the winter of 1918–1919, and left the service in the spring of 1919; Ohio's record of its World War I servicemen gives the dates 25 May 1918 and 2 April 1919.4–5 The Veterans Administration later kept a file for him.6

Two marriages

On 26 August 1920 he married Ina M. Fisher in Richland County.7 Their daughter Margery was born about 1925.8 In March 1929, at La Porte, Indiana, a Wilbur C. Hegnauer born at Columbus on 3 April 1893, son of Christian Hegnauer and Cornelia Conzett, married Frieda C. Hipp: the details leave no doubt that the groom was Wilbur.9 A son, Wilbur Morris Hegnauer, was born to Frieda Hipp at Chesterton, Indiana, on 27 March 1929, and was probably his; Wilbur Morris died in Minnesota in 1995 and was buried in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.10 How Wilbur's first marriage stood at the time has not been found. By 1940 he was living again at Mansfield with Ina and their daughter Margery, then fifteen.8

Last years

In 1942, at forty-nine, Wilbur registered for the draft again at Mansfield.11 He died at Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, on 22 October 1948, aged fifty-five; his death record names his parents, Christian Hegnauer and Cornelia Conzett, and his wife, Ina.2 He was cremated.12–13 His daughter Margery, later Mrs. Koroknay, also died in Ohio.14

  • Military service: The muster-roll collection ("United States, Enlisted and Officer Muster Rolls and Rosters, 1916–1939") does not name the branch in the index extract; read the rolls for his branch, unit and rank. One muster-roll entry is dated 31 Dec 1916, probably a misreading of 1918, since his service began on 25 May 1918.5 The VA index entry dated 30 Sep 1919 at Niagara Falls, New York, may record a later enlistment or a claim.6 An Ohio grave registration of soldiers indexes a death on 1 May 1905 in Carroll County, which cannot be his and is probably a misreading of the card.15
  • The 1929 marriage: The Indiana record's details (birth date, birthplace, both parents) identify the groom. Whether he had divorced Ina and later returned to her, or the Indiana marriage was irregular, is not known; the county divorce records of Richland County, Ohio, and LaPorte County, Indiana, should be searched. The 1940 census and his death record both name Ina as his wife.9, 8, 2
  • Wilbur Morris Hegnauer (probable son): Born 27 Mar 1929 at Chesterton, Porter County, Indiana, to Frieda Hipp and a father indexed as "William" Hegnauer; died 1 May 1995, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The mother's name and the timing (eighteen days after the La Porte marriage) point to Wilbur; the father's given name in the Social Security index does not match. A Wilbur Hegnauer born about 1929 in Indiana was living at Schneider, Lake County, Indiana, in 1940 (census index). He is a great-grandson of Peter Hegnauer and has no H-ID yet; his children (born in the 1950s) are living.10
