Life story
Luzia Luzi was born about 1771, a daughter of Peter Luzi and Elsbeth Donau.1 Where she was born, and how she spent the first thirty-five years of her life, is not yet known.
On 23 December 1806, in the church at Igis, in the Rhine valley of Graubünden, Switzerland, she married Nutt Hegnauer, a son of Christian Hegnauer and Ursula Radig, who was about nine years younger than she.2–3 Their first son, Christian, was baptised on 23 April 1807, and a son, Benediget (Benedikt), whose baptism has not been found, was buried on 25 October 1810.4–5 In February 1812, when Luzia was about forty, she brought her son Peter to be baptised; he bore her own father's name.6 One more child of Nutt and Luzia, whose name the index does not give, was buried at Igis.7 Christian, the eldest, died in October 1830 at the age of twenty-three.8
Peter married Anna Berri in 1833, and Luzia lived to see a large family of grandchildren growing up in Igis; a granddaughter born in May 1838 was named Luzia after her.9–10 She died at Igis on 9 March 1853, aged about eighty-two, and was buried two days later. Nutt died ten months after her.1, 3 The register of Igis citizen families counts Nutt and Luzia as the founding couple of one of the village's Hegnauer citizen families, a line their son Peter took to America in 1872.11

The Igis marriage index gives Nutt Hegnauer and Luzia Luzi, 23 Dec 1806. The couple is named as the parents at the baptisms of 1807 and 1812 and the burials of their children, and Nutt's burial of 1854 names his spouse Luzia Luzi.

The Igis burial register (FamilySearch index) gives Luzia Hegnauer, died 9 Mar 1853, born 1771, parents Peter Luzi and Elsbeth Donau. She is the only Luzia who married a Hegnauer in the Igis indexes, and her husband Nutt's burial the next year names his wife Luzia Luzi, so the entry is taken to be hers.

- Her burial: The entry of 11 Mar 1853 is indexed under her married name, Luzia Hegnauer, and names her parents, Peter Luzi and Elsbeth Donau, but not her husband.1 It is taken to be hers because she is the only Luzia married to a Hegnauer in the Igis indexes, and her husband's burial (Jan 1854) names his wife as Luzia Luzi.3
- Surname: Luzi (marriage; 1807 and 1812 baptisms), Lutzi (other indexes of the same records and of Peter's marriage) and Luz (1810 burial) are variants of one name.2, 4, 9, 5
