Life story
Igis and the Voyage
Christina Hegnauer was born on 26 October 1845 in Igis, Graubünden, Switzerland, and baptized there on 2 November. She was a daughter of Luzius Hegnauer and Anna Margreth Bernet, the third of their five children baptized at Igis and the only girl among them.1 Her brothers were John, Leonhard, Martin and Christian.
In 1856, when she was ten, the family emigrated. They sailed from Le Havre on 22 August 1856 on the ship Chace (printed "Chase" on the passenger list) and reached New York on 29 September.2 The passenger list, dated the next day, gives them as "Hegemann" and lists Christina as "Christian[e]", 10.3 Late in life she still gave 1856 as the year she came to America.4–5
Gasconade County
The family settled in Boeuf Township, Gasconade County, Missouri, in the German-speaking farm country around Hermann. In 1860 Christine, 14, was at home with her parents, her four brothers and her little sister Barbara, who had been born in Missouri about 1859.6
About 1869 she married Sylvester Krattly (Kraettli). He was a Swiss farmer eleven years older than she was, who had come to America in 1846.4, 7–8 His obituary in the Hermann paper in 1916 gives the year of the marriage as 1869 and calls her "Miss Christine Hegnauer of this county", that is, of Gasconade County; no record of the marriage itself has been found.9 In 1870 Sylvester was farming with Christ Kraettli in Roark Township, Gasconade County, near Hermann.10 Their first children were born in Missouri between about 1869 and 1873.11 As late as 1913 Sylvester still kept $5,000 in notes at the Peoples Bank of Hermann.12
Krattley Crossing
In 1872 or 1873 the Krattlys moved to Marion Township, Jasper County, in southwest Missouri. Sylvester's obituary gives 1872, and at her death Christina was said to have lived there sixty-one years.9, 13–14 Their farm lay about four miles southwest of Carthage (3½ miles west, by another paper's reckoning), at a place known as "Krattley Crossing".14–15 In 1880 Sylvester was farming and Christine was keeping house for seven children.11
Christina bore nine children, eight of whom were living in 1900 and 1910.4, 7 The eldest, Margaret ("Maggie"), born about 1869, married a Schaller; Find a Grave gives her death in 1892.11, 16 Mary (born September 1871), Lizzie (January 1873, "Alizzy" in 1880), Rosa (March 1874) and Flora (19 November 1879) married men named Kasper, Blase, Eliason and Rose.4, 12, 17–18 Find a Grave gives Mary's death in 1917, and Flora died in 1965.16–17 Their only son, Sylvester, was born on 10 September 1876,19 and Alma in April 1878 (1879 in her Social Security record); Alma later married a Michel.4, 20 The two youngest, Anna (12 August 1886) and Emma (about 1888), stayed at home unmarried; Anna died in 1949.5, 21

In 1900 Sylvester, then a gardener, owned the farm free of debt, and all eight surviving children were still at home.4 When her brother Leonhard died at Appleton City in 1916, his obituary listed "Mrs. Krattley of Carthage" among his surviving sisters.22
Widowhood
Sylvester died on 14 May 1916, aged 81.23 His will, made in 1913, left $5,000 in notes to be shared among the eight children. Out of it their son Sylvester received an extra $400 "for the care and consideration which he has given to his mother and myself", and the three unmarried daughters $50 each. Sylvester also received a team of horses and all the farm machinery, wagons, buggies and harness. Everything else, including the land, went to "my beloved wife, Christina Krattly" for her lifetime. Christina and her son were named executors and received letters testamentary on 23 May 1916.12, 24
Christina stayed on the farm, which the will gave her for life. In 1918 she was her son's nearest relative on his draft card.19 In 1920, at seventy-four, the census listed her as head of the household and a farmer, with the farm free of mortgage; her son Sylvester worked on the home farm. He and three unmarried daughters lived with her, together with her granddaughter Anna Kayser, 9, probably a daughter of her daughter Mary Kasper.5 By 1930 the household was in her son Sylvester's name, and she was eighty-four and widowed.8
Death
Christina died at home at Krattley Crossing on 8 January 1934, aged 88.13–14 Her funeral was held on 10 January at the Knell Service Home in Carthage, with the Rev. Samuel Michael, the Lutheran pastor of Joplin, in charge.13–15 She was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Carthage, where her husband had been buried in 1916.16, 23, 25 She left six daughters, her son, twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, and her one surviving brother, Christ (Christian) Hegnauer of Metolius, Oregon.14

The Igis baptism register (three FamilySearch index entries) gives birth on 26 Oct 1845 and baptism on 2 Nov 1845, with parents Luzius Hegnauer and Margreth Bernet. Her 1934 death certificate, her obituary and her gravestone, all made in Missouri, give the same day, and the 1900 census gives Oct 1845, Switzerland. Her age fits on the 1856 passenger list (10) and in the 1860 (14), 1880 (34), 1910 (64) and 1930 (84) censuses. Only the 1920 census (71) disagrees. The member-tree birthplace "Schnottwil, Solothurn" has no source and conflicts with the register.

Arrived at New York on the ship Chace (printed "Chase" on the passenger list), which had sailed from Le Havre on 22 Aug 1856, with her parents and four brothers. The passenger list, dated 30 Sep 1856, gives her as "Christian[e] Hegemann", 10 (indexed as a boy, "Christian").
The Hegemann family of seven on the Chase fits the Igis family in given names, birth order and every age. Christina herself gave 1856 as her year of immigration in 1900 and 1920. The 1930 census's "1835" is an error, since she was born in 1845. The ship reached New York on 29 Sep 1856 (New York Herald and New-York Daily Tribune, 30 Sep 1856); NARA and Ancestry date the list 30 Sep.

Place not found; probably Gasconade County, Missouri: her husband's 1916 obituary in the Hermann paper says he married "Miss Christine Hegnauer of this county" in 1869, and he lived there in 1870. Census answers: married 31 years (1900), 41 years (1910), age at first marriage 24 (1930). Nine children, eight living in 1900 and 1910.
No marriage register entry has been found (Missouri and Illinois marriage indexes searched, 1864–1874). Sylvester's obituary in the Hermann Advertiser-Courier (24 May 1916, read on the page image) says he married "Miss Christine Hegnauer of this county" in 1869. The 1900 census (married 31 years, June 1900) and the 1910 census (41 years, April 1910) both point to 1868–69, and her 1930 age at first marriage (24, read from the image; the index says 32) points to late 1869 or 1870. Their eldest daughter Margaret was 11 in June 1880, so she was born about 1869. About 1869 is accepted. The husband was listed without her in Roark Township, Gasconade County, in 1870, which is unexplained.

The Jasper County Democrat's "Krattley Rites Today" (issue of Friday 12 Jan, evidently reprinted from a Wednesday daily) also names Oak Hill. Her marker stands there.

Her age fits on the 1856 passenger list (10) and in the 1860 (14), 1880 (34), 1910 (64) and 1930 (84) censuses. Only the 1920 census (71) disagrees. The member-tree birthplace "Schnottwil, Solothurn" has no source and conflicts with the register.

Arrived at New York on the ship Chace (printed "Chase" on the passenger list), which had sailed from Le Havre on 22 Aug 1856, with her parents and four brothers. The passenger list, dated 30 Sep 1856, gives her as "Christian[e] Hegemann", 10 (indexed as a boy, "Christian").
The Hegemann family of seven on the Chase fits the Igis family in given names, birth order and every age. Christina herself gave 1856 as her year of immigration in 1900 and 1920. The 1930 census's "1835" is an error, since she was born in 1845. The ship reached New York on 29 Sep 1856 (New York Herald and New-York Daily Tribune, 30 Sep 1856); NARA and Ancestry date the list 30 Sep.

1869 Marriage, with Sylvester Krattly
Place not found; probably Gasconade County, Missouri: her husband's 1916 obituary in the Hermann paper says he married "Miss Christine Hegnauer of this county" in 1869, and he lived there in 1870. Census answers: married 31 years (1900), 41 years (1910), age at first marriage 24 (1930). Nine children, eight living in 1900 and 1910.
No marriage register entry has been found (Missouri and Illinois marriage indexes searched, 1864–1874). Sylvester's obituary in the Hermann Advertiser-Courier (24 May 1916, read on the page image) says he married "Miss Christine Hegnauer of this county" in 1869. The 1900 census (married 31 years, June 1900) and the 1910 census (41 years, April 1910) both point to 1868–69, and her 1930 age at first marriage (24, read from the image; the index says 32) points to late 1869 or 1870. Their eldest daughter Margaret was 11 in June 1880, so she was born about 1869. About 1869 is accepted. The husband was listed without her in Roark Township, Gasconade County, in 1870, which is unexplained.

With her son Sylvester, granted letters testamentary on her husband's estate by the Jasper County Probate Court. His will (2 Jan 1913) left her the rest of his property, including the land, for life. The exceptions were $5,000 in notes, shared among the children, and a team of horses, the farm machinery and vehicles, left to their son Sylvester.
The will names "my beloved wife, Christina Krattly" as life tenant and executrix. The executor's notice of 25 May 1916 is signed by Christina Krattly and Sylvester Krattly as executors.

Her Missouri death certificate (no. 1575, filed 10 Jan 1934; the informant was her daughter Emma) gives death on 8 Jan 1934 in Marion Township, Route 4, Carthage. It names her father as L. Hegnauer and her mother as "Barnett" [Bernet]. The Carthage Evening Press reported her death the same day, and her gravestone agrees. All three give a birth date that matches the Igis baptism.

Research notes
- Given name: Two of the three Igis baptism index entries read Christina and one reads Christine. She used Christina in her own records (the 1900–1920 censuses, her husband's will, her death certificate and her gravestone). Christine appears in 1860, 1880 and 1930. Her married surname was usually spelled Krattly, and also Krattley, Kratly and, in Gasconade County, Kraettli. Her husband's 1916 obituary in the Hermann paper spells the name Kraettly.
- Marriage (register entry not found): The date of about 1869 rests on the censuses and on Sylvester's 1916 obituary in the Hermann Advertiser-Courier, which gives 1869 and calls her "of this county" (Gasconade).9 The Missouri Marriage Records 1805–2002 and the Illinois county marriage indexes show no Krattly–Hegnauer marriage for 1864–1874. A member tree gives "1869, Gasconade County" without a source. In 1870 Sylvester (35) was in Roark Township, Gasconade County, with Christ Kraettli (45), and Christine (about 24) and baby Margaret were not with him.10 Her own 1870 entry has not been found. Leads: the Gasconade County marriage register for 1868–1870 (FamilySearch images); the Hermann Evangelical and Lutheran church registers; the Hermanner Volksblatt; her mother's 1870 household.
- Eldest daughter Margaret: She appears only in the 1880 census (11) and on Find a Grave (1869–1892, Mrs. Schaller, memorial 83253592). The nine children born (1900, 1910) match the nine names, so she was Christina's daughter. She is not in her father's 1913 will because she had died in 1892.
- Birth years of children: The 1900 census gives Flora Nov 1880 and Anna Aug 1885. Flora's death certificate and the 1880 census (6/12, born Nov) give Nov 1879, and Anna's death certificate gives 12 Aug 1886. Emma's year is unsettled: Mar 1887 in 1900, 1888 on Find a Grave (23 Mar 1888 in an uncited member tree), and her later census ages (21 in 1910, 30 in 1920, 40 in 1930) point to 1888–89. Her own death record has not been seen. Alma's Social Security record gives 22 Apr 1879, but the 1880 and 1900 censuses and Find a Grave give Apr 1878, and Apr 1879 is impossible, since Flora was born on 19 Nov 1879.
- Son Sylvester's marital status: He was single in 1910 and 1920. The 1930 census appears to mark him "Wd", with age at first marriage 46 (about 1922–23). This is unexplained and is left for his own profile.
- Immigration year: 1856 (passenger list; her 1900 and 1920 answers). The 1930 census "1835" is impossible, and a member tree repeats it.
- Age in 1920: 71, against 74 actual. Every other record fits 1845.
- Naturalization: The 1920 and 1930 censuses call her naturalized (the 1920 year is unclear, "18[5?]9"). As a married woman before 1922 she would have taken her citizenship from her husband (listed as a citizen in 1870 and as naturalized in 1910), or as a minor from her father. No record of her own is expected.
- Wrong person: "Christina Krattly", 32, of Sutter County, California (1877 Great Register, naturalized 15 Apr 1867), is a male voter, probably a Christian Krättli. Christina was bearing children in Jasper County in 1876 and 1878. The member-tree claims that she was born at "Schnottwil, Solothurn", naturalized in 1867 and living in Sutter County in 1877 either come from that record or have no source, and they conflict with the Igis baptism.
- Find a Grave text: The memorial's transcription of the Carthage Evening Press obituary gives "81 years" of residence, where the newspaper reads 61.
- Move to Jasper County: 1872 in Sylvester's 1916 obituary, against about 1873 implied by the 61 years' residence in her 1934 death certificate and obituary. Their daughter Lizzie was born in Jan 1873 and Rosa in Mar 1874, so the move was probably in 1872–73.
- Sylvester's obituaries: The Hermann Advertiser-Courier of 24 May 1916 has been read against the page image. It gives the 1869 marriage and the 1872 move, and lists his widow and seven children as survivors, leaving out Flora (Mrs. Rose), who was living. The Ancestry obituary index misreads the marriage year as 1872. The Carthage Evening Press of 15 May 1916 (reprinted in the Carthage Press on 18 May) names all eight living children, Flora included, and gives the 1869 marriage to "Miss Christine Hegnauer, of Gasconade County".9, 18
- Open question, probate: The Jasper County probate packets for Sylvester (1916) and Christina (1934).
