Margaret Krattly, called Maggie, was born in Missouri about 1869, the eldest child of Sylvester Krattly and Christina Hegnauer, Swiss-born farmers who had married about 1869, probably in Gasconade County, and moved to Marion Township, Jasper County, in 1872.1–2 In June 1880 she was eleven and at school, the eldest of seven children at home on the farm west of Carthage.1

Maggie married a man named Schaller, and she died young, in 1892, according to Find a Grave.3 By 1900 her mother counted nine children born and eight living, and when her father made his will in 1913 he named eight living children; Maggie was not among them.4–5
