Life story
Mary Krattly was born in Missouri in September 1871, a daughter of Sylvester Krattly and Christina Hegnauer, Swiss-born farmers of Marion Township, Jasper County, Missouri. Her parents were still living in Gasconade County when she was born, and moved to Jasper County the next year.1–3
Mary grew up on the farm west of Carthage. In June 1900, at twenty-eight, she was still at home and working as a dressmaker.1 She later married a man named Kasper; her father's will of January 1913 calls her Mary Kasper, and when he died in May 1916 she was living on Carthage Route 4, the same rural route as the family farm.3–5 She stands in the back row of a photograph of the whole family taken in front of the farmhouse before 1913.6
Mary died, according to Find a Grave, in 1917; she was not among the daughters who survived her mother in 1934.7–8 In 1920 her mother had a granddaughter, Anna Kayser, aged nine, living with her, and in 1930 an Alma C. Kasper, nineteen, was living in the same household as the niece of Mary's brother Sylvester; this was probably Mary's daughter, one girl under two readings of her name.9–10

- Husband and daughter: Her husband's given name has not been found. Five Carthage newspaper items of June 1917 naming her mother are in Ancestry's obituary index (probably Mary's death and funeral); one mentions a "John", perhaps her husband. They have not been read. The granddaughter Anna Kayser, 9, of 1920 and the niece Alma C. Kasper, 19, of 1930 are probably the same girl, Mary's daughter, but that is an inference from age and surname.9, 10
