Margaret ("Maggie") Hegnauer was born on 15 June 1877 in St. Louis, Missouri, the second daughter of Martin Hegnauer, a Swiss-born laborer, and Mary Gambler.1–2 In June 1880 "Margreate", three, was living with her parents and her sisters Lizzie and Bertha at 602 South Second Street; her brother Martin was born in 1884.2–3 In 1885 the family moved to Pleasant Gap Township in Bates County, and that August her mother died, when Maggie was eight.3 Her grandmother Katharina Gambler of St. Joseph remembered "Margareth" and her brother and sisters in her will of 1895.4

Maggie never married. In 1910 she and her brother Martin were listed in the household of Monroe Smiley in Rockville Township, and by 1920 both were living with their father on the farm near Rockville that he had bought in 1910. Maggie was then 41; her death certificate describes her as a housekeeper.1, 3, 5–6

In February 1926 Maggie had an operation for cancer of the left breast. She died at Rockville on 27 May 1926, aged 48, and was buried two days later in the Rockville Cemetery.1, 7 Her sister Lizzie gave the details for her death certificate.1 Ten months later their father died, and he was laid to rest beside "his beloved daughter, Miss Maggie".3

Her father's obituary says all four children were born in St. Louis. No birth record has been found.

    At 2:30 a.m., of exhaustion, following carcinoma of the left breast, for which she had been operated on in Feb 1926; attended since Apr 1926 by Dr. A. B. Freeman of Rockville. Single; housekeeper. Missouri death certificate no. 15445-B.

    Her Missouri death certificate (image read) gives 27 May 1926 at Rockville, with her father Martin Hegnauer and her mother Mary Gambler; the informant was her sister Lizzie Harden. Her father's obituary (1927) says she died on 27 May, "just ten months ago", and Find a Grave agrees.

    Rockville Cemetery; undertaker S. H. Bothwell of Rockville. Her father was buried beside her in 1927.

    The death certificate gives burial in the Rockville Cemetery on 29 May 1926, and her father's obituary says he "was laid to rest by his beloved daughter, Miss Maggie". Find a Grave has her memorial in Rockville Cemetery.

  • Identity: "Margreate", 3, in the 1880 household of Martin and Mary in St. Louis; "Margareth", one of the four grandchildren in Katharina Gambler's 1895 will; Maggie, 41, single, daughter of Martin in 1920; and Miss Maggie Hegnauer, who died at Rockville in 1926, daughter of Martin Hegnauer and Mary Gambler, are one woman.2, 4, 6, 1 The census facts come from the Ancestry tree's attached records and FamilySearch's indexes; the death certificate was read from the image.
  • Birth year (conflict): The death certificate gives 15 Jun 1878, but its stated age (48 y 11 m 12 d) computes to 15 Jun 1877, and her sister Bertha was born in Oct 1878 (1900 census), so June 1878 is impossible. Her age of 3 in June 1880 fits 1877; her age in 1920 (41) points to 1878. 1877 is accepted, as on Find a Grave.1, 2, 6, 7 The FamilySearch tree has 1879.
  • 1900 and 1910: She is not in her father's household in 1900, and her whereabouts that year have not been found.
