Anna Margreth Bernet was baptised on 27 February 1819 at Igis, a village in the Rhine valley of Graubünden, Switzerland, the daughter of Johannes Bernet and Dorothea Grest.1 In 1856 she and her husband, Luzius Hegnauer, took their five children to America and made a new home in Missouri.2, 3

Igis and the voyage

Margreth was the tenth of her parents' eleven children, all baptised at Igis between 1797 and 1824. Five of them died as small children, and her mother died in June 1830, when Margreth was eleven.4, 1, 5, 6

On 14 June 1840, at twenty-one, Margreth married Luzius in the Igis church.7 Five children followed over eleven years, all baptised at Igis: Johannes (John), born 13 November 1840;8 Leonhard, born 25 April 1843;9 Christina, born 26 October 1845;10 Martin, born 20 February 1848;11 and Christian, born 18 February 1851.12

After the food shortages of 1848–50 many people in Graubünden decided to emigrate for good, and from the 1850s the United States was the country they chose most often.13 In 1856 Margreth and Luzius joined them. They sailed from Le Havre on the ship Chace on 22 August and reached New York on 29 September, among about two hundred passengers.14 The passenger list gives her the French form of her name, Marguerite, aged 37.2 Her elder sister Barbara, who had married Christian Dönz at Igis in 1833, also went to America with her husband and children; by 1860 the family was living in Madison County, Illinois, as Tontz, and Barbara died at Highland in 1881.15, 16

Missouri

The family seems to have gone first to Highland, in Madison County, Illinois, and then on to Boeuf Township, Gasconade County, Missouri.17, 18, 19 Their post office was Hermann, a town on the Missouri River laid out in 1837 by the German Settlement Association of Philadelphia.3, 20 In September 1860 the census taker recorded Margreth, 41, with her husband and their four sons and two daughters; the next farms were also Swiss. Their last child, Barbara, then one, had been born in Missouri about 1859, probably in Gasconade County, the only one of the six born in America.3 During the Civil War Luzius, in his forties, served as a private in the 4th Missouri Infantry.21 In 1869 her elder daughter, Christina, still living in Gasconade County, married Sylvester Krattly, a Swiss farmer whose family had settled near Hermann.22

By 1880 the family had moved west to Bates County, Missouri, on the Kansas border. The county had been emptied during the war, when the Union army's General Order No. 11 of August 1863 ordered its people from their homes, and many of the exiles never returned.23 In June 1880 Margreth, 60, was keeping house in Prairie Township in the household of her unmarried son Christian, with her husband and her daughter Barbara.24 Barbara's obituary says that she came to Bates County from Gasconade County.25 In 1884 the county directory listed her with Luzius, a farmer, in Pleasant Gap Township, next to their son Leonhard, with the post office at Papinville.26

Margreth was apparently still living in 1884. When and where she died is not known, and no notice of her death has been found. Her son Martin's obituary, in 1927, called him "one of six children" of Lucius and Margaret Hegnauer,17 and three of her children's death certificates name her as their mother: Martin's, in Missouri in 1927, as Margaret Barnet; Christina's, in Missouri in 1934, by her maiden name, Barnett; and Christian's, in Oregon in 1935, as Margaret Bernet.27, 28, 29

Baptized at Igis on 27 Feb 1819 (parish register); no birth date is recorded.

Only the baptism is recorded, so she was born on or shortly before that day. Her ages on the 1856 passenger list (37, as read on the image) and in the 1860 census (41) fit a birth early in 1819 exactly; the 1880 census (60) is a year low, a common census discrepancy. The 1884 county directory's "1815, Ger." is an error in a derivative compilation, which also gives her husband 1813 and Germany.

Research notes

  • Sources: Her baptism, marriage and the baptisms of her children are from FamilySearch's index of the Igis Reformed registers; the register images have not been viewed. The historical background is from the Historisches Lexikon der Schweiz and the State Historical Society of Missouri.
  • Arrival: The ship Chace (printed "Chase" on the passenger list) sailed from Le Havre on 22 Aug 1856 and reached New York on 29 Sep 1856, "36 days" out (New York Herald and New-York Daily Tribune, 30 Sep 1856).14 The list, dated 30 Sep, writes the surname "Hegemann"; her line is indexed "Margarite", 39, but the image reads Marguerite, 37, which fits her Feb 1819 baptism.2 Sixty years later her son Leonhard's obituary also gave 1856 as the year the family came to America, and said they first settled in Gasconade County;19 the 1918 county history, which names her as Margaret Bernet, agrees on the year.18
  • Death: Not found; recorded as "after 1884". The last firm record is the June 1880 census. Newsom's 1884 directory of Bates County names "M. Barnett" as Luzius's wife, which implies she was then living. The "after 1884" rests on that entry. Its birth years (1813 and 1815) and birthplace ("Ger.") are wrong for the couple, and Luzius's elder brother Leonhard (baptised 1812) is a theoretical namesake with no known American record. But the wife's maiden name, the post office Papinville (Luzius's post office on the 1890 veterans schedule; see his profile) and the entry's place beside son Leonhard all fit Luzius and Margreth.26 Without it, the last sighting would be June 1880. She has not been found in the 1900 census (index searches under Hegnauer spellings). No Bates County death register entry, probate or Find a Grave memorial has been found. A Newspapers.com search of 27 Sep 2026 found no death or burial notice for her. It covered about 230 queries in Missouri, Kansas, Illinois and Oregon papers of 1856–1900, under Hegnauer and its variants, "Mrs." forms, and Margaretha, Margaret and Margreth (her maiden name was not searched in the newspapers). All the Appleton City Journal items of 1892–1896 have now been read; they concern her grandson Leonard and her son Leonhard. Bates County's pre-1910 death register on Ancestry effectively covers only 1883–1887, so its silence proves little. Luzius's invalid pension (certificate 638,825) was reported granted in the Kansas City Times and the Kansas City Star of 21 Aug 1891 (one list, printed twice),30, 31 and his pension index card shows no widow's or minor's claim.21 That fits a death before his, but a widow with other means may simply not have applied.
  • Rejected family-tree claims: The FamilySearch tree (L6LY-RPG) has carried a death of 6 Mar 1897 at Brienz, Bern, with no source. She lived in Missouri from 1856 until at least 1884, and nothing connects her with Brienz, so this is almost certainly another woman's death conflated with hers. The same claim appears in an Ancestry member tree. The "about 1891" formerly on WikiTree came from a 2014 GEDCOM import and was also unsourced.
  • Burial: Unknown. The two candidates are the Reform Cemetery at the German Reformed church in Pleasant Gap Township, where her son Leonhard and his wife are buried (see his profile), and the Prairie City Cemetery. The Prairie City Cemetery has a stone for Mary Hegnauer (1851–1885), probably her son Martin's wife, on a base inscribed "HEGNAUER".32 Neither cemetery's interment list has been checked for an unmarked grave; the German Reformed church burial register would be the best source.
  • 1860 census: Barbara, the only child born in America, was one year old; her birthplace is given only as Missouri, so Gasconade County is probable, not proven.3
  • 1870 census: Not found. Index searches of all Swiss-born people in Bates County, of Swiss-born people born 1814–1824 in Gasconade County, and of her name variants in Missouri and Illinois found neither parent, nor Christian or Barbara. The family may be misindexed (for example, born "Germany") or may have been in Illinois; a page-by-page search is needed.
  • 1880 census, who kept house: Settled from the image. "Keeping house" is written on Margreth's line, and Barbara's line carries a ditto of it.24
  • Parents and siblings: Her parents were Johannes Bernet and Dorothea Grest, from her 1819 baptism and the bride's entry of her 1840 marriage.1, 7 The FamilySearch tree already links her to them (Johannes Bernet KCC2-91N and Maria Dorothes Grest 9CYV-PW6). FamilySearch's index of the Igis registers (searched 27 Sep 2026) gives the whole family: eleven children baptised at Igis from 1797 to 1824, of whom she was the tenth, and five of whom died as small children (see her parents' profiles).4, 5 It bears out the claims of the Stevenson-Mathews member tree that could be tested: her mother, called Maria Dorothea at three of the baptisms, died at Igis on 26 Jun 1830;6 her sister Dorothea died there on 25 Jan 1843;33 her sister Barbara was baptised in 1804; and her brother Jacob was born and died in 1824.4, 5 Barbara married Christian Dönz at Igis on 10 Mar 1833. As the Tontz family they were in Madison County, Illinois, by 1860, and Barbara died at Highland on 26 Aug 1881; the Find a Grave index gives her birth as 6 Nov 1804, against her baptism of 15 Sep 1804.15, 16 In 1860 and 1863 three of Barbara's children married three of the brothers and sisters of Susanna Katharina Hirschi, so the two families were already joined when Margreth's son Leonhard married Susanna at Highland in 1866.34 Barbara's family probably explains why Leonhard (1866) and John (1869) married in Madison County (see their profiles).
  • Where the family settled: The 1918 county history says the parents made a "permanent settlement in Madison county, Illinois". The "permanent" settlement is wrong for them: they were in Gasconade County, Missouri, by 1858–1860. But a short first stop at Highland is probable. Her son Martin's obituary (1927) says the family settled first "in Highland, Ill., later moving to Gasconade County Mo.",17 and her sister Barbara's family lived in the Highland area by 1860.16 Her son Leonhard's obituary (1916) says only that the family first settled in Gasconade County.19 The full argument is on Luzius's profile.
  • Open questions: her exact death date and place; her burial; the family's residence in 1870; whether Luzius's pension file (certificate 638,825) mentions her; whether she lived with her daughter Barbara Kamm after 1884; and who the other grantors were in the March 1890 quitclaim "Leonard Hegnauer et al to John Kamm" (an undivided interest in the SE¼ of Sec. 27, T39N R30W), in case it was a deed by heirs.35 The Bates County deed books would name them. A Butler letter list of 6 Oct 1887 names a "Mrs. Mary Hegnaner"; no record calls Margreth Mary, and the entry is unassigned (Bates County Democrat, 6 Oct 1887, p. 8, newspapers.com/image/999019359).
