Switzerland and Hermann

Sylvester Krattly (Krättli) was born in Switzerland on 5 November 1834.1–2 In 1846, when he was eleven, he came to America with his parents, who "bought a farm and settled near Hermann", in the German-speaking farm country of Gasconade County, Missouri.3–5 He was still farming there in 1870, when the census taker found "Sylvester Kraettli", thirty-five, in Roark Township with Christ Kraettli, forty-five, probably his elder brother.6

Marriage

In 1869, as both of his obituaries tell it, Sylvester married Christine Hegnauer "of Gasconade county"; no record of the marriage itself has been found.3–4 She was a Swiss girl eleven years younger than he was, who had come to America in 1856.5 Their first child, Margaret, was born about 1869, and Mary followed in 1871.5, 7

Krattley Crossing

In 1872 the family moved to a farm in Marion Township, Jasper County, in the southwest corner of the state, about three and a half miles west of Carthage.3–4 The place came to be known as "Krattley Crossing".8 Over the next sixteen years came Lizzie, Rosa, Sylvester, Alma, Flora, Anna and Emma.5 In June 1880 Sylvester, forty-five, was farming with seven children at home.7 One child, Margaret, had died by 1900, but the other eight all lived to be grown; in 1900 all eight were still at home, and Sylvester, who owned the farm free of mortgage, called himself a gardener.5 In 1910, at seventy-five, he was still farming, with his son and three unmarried daughters at home.9 A photograph of the family, taken in those years, shows the ten of them in front of their two-storey frame farmhouse with its gingerbread porch.10

He kept his ties with Gasconade County: when he made his will, on 2 January 1913, he had $5,000 in notes deposited with the Peoples Bank of Hermann. He left $400 of it to his son Sylvester "for the care and consideration which he has given to his mother and myself", $50 to each of his three unmarried daughters, and the rest in equal shares to his eight children. His son was also to have a team of horses and all the farm machinery, wagons, buggies and harness, and everything else, the land included, went to "my beloved wife, Christina Krattly" for her lifetime.11

Death

Sylvester died at home on Sunday, 14 May 1916, aged eighty-one, after four weeks' illness.1, 4 The funeral was held at the Krattly home on the Tuesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. J. W. Trowbridge, and he was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery at Carthage, where a flat marker with his name and dates lies in the family plot.1–2, 4, 12 The Hermann paper noted that two relatives, Peter Danuser and Fritz Oelschlaeger, attended the funeral.3 His will was proved on 23 May 1916, and Christina and their son Sylvester took out letters as executors.11, 13

  • Origin (open). Switzerland only, in every record. A member tree (Gordon Burt Family Tree) gives Untervaz, Graubünden, the next village to Igis, without citing a register; Krättli is an old surname in that part of the Rhine valley.
  • Christ Kraettli. The farmer of 45 with whom he lived in 1870 was probably his brother Christian Kraettly (about 1824–1907), whose will is reported to call Sylvester "my dear brother" (not yet read).
  • Parents. Not yet identified.

    Canton and village not found; a member tree gives Untervaz, Graubünden, without a source.

    His death certificate (informant his son Sylvester), both 1916 obituaries and his gravestone give 5 Nov 1834 in Switzerland, and the 1900 census gives Nov 1834, Switzerland. His ages of 35 (1870), 45 (1880) and 75 (1910) fit. All are later sources; no baptism has been found.

    With his parents, who bought a farm and settled near Hermann, Gasconade County, Missouri (both 1916 obituaries).

    The 1900 census gives 1846 as his year of immigration (54 years in the United States) and the 1910 census gives 1846, naturalized; the Hermann obituary says that "in 1846 he came to this country with his parents", and the Carthage obituary that his parents bought a farm near Hermann.

  3. 1869 Marriage, with Christina Hegnauer about 1869 · proven

    Place not found; probably Gasconade County, Missouri: both of his 1916 obituaries say he married "Miss Christine Hegnauer" of Gasconade County in 1869. Census answers: married 31 years (1900), 41 years (1910). Nine children, eight living in 1900 and 1910.

    No marriage register entry has been found (Missouri and Illinois marriage indexes searched, 1864–1874). Both 1916 obituaries, the Hermann Advertiser-Courier's and the Carthage Evening Press's, give 1869 and say that the bride was of Gasconade County. The 1900 census (married 31 years) and the 1910 census (41 years) point to 1868–69, and their eldest daughter Margaret was 11 in June 1880. About 1869 is accepted. He was listed without her in Roark Township, Gasconade County, in 1870, which is unexplained.

    His Missouri death certificate gives 14 May 1916 at Carthage R.F.D. 4, Jasper County; the Carthage Evening Press of Monday 15 May says he died "yesterday morning" (Sunday, 14 May) at his farm 3½ miles west of Carthage, which lay in Marion Township (1880–1910 censuses); his gravestone agrees on the date.

    The death certificate gives burial at Oak Hill Cemetery on 16 May 1916, and the Carthage Evening Press of 15 May announced the funeral for "tomorrow afternoon" with burial at Oak Hill. A photograph of his marker in the family plot at Oak Hill and his Find a Grave memorial agree.

  • Name: Krattly is the spelling of his will, his gravestone and his widow's records; the Swiss form is Krättli (Kraettli in the 1870 census, Kraettly in the Hermann paper). Other spellings: Krattley (death certificate, 1910 census), Kratly (1880), Kratley (Carthage obituary), Silvester (1900).
  • Origin (open): Switzerland only, in every record. A member tree (Gordon Burt Family Tree) gives Untervaz, Graubünden, the next village to Igis, without citing a register; Krättli is an old surname in that part of the Rhine valley. The Ancestry survey of his member media reports that Nicolas and Marie Kraettli arrived in 1846 on the ship Amulet with sons Christian and Silvester, and that Nickolas (59) and Mary (48) headed his household in 1850; these records have not yet been abstracted in the study and are recorded here as leads, with the member tree's claim that his mother was a Plattner. The Untervaz baptism register for 1834 should settle his birthplace.
  • Christ Kraettli: The farmer of 45 with whom he lived in 1870 was probably his brother Christian Kraettly (about 1824–1907), whose will is reported to call Sylvester "my dear brother" (not yet read).6
