Life story
Alma Krattly was born on 27 April 1878, a daughter of Sylvester Krattly and Christina Hegnauer, Swiss-born farmers of Marion Township, Jasper County, Missouri; her Social Security record names Carthage as her birthplace.1–4 She stayed at home until she was about forty: she was at home in 1900 and 1910, one of the three daughters still unmarried when her father made his will in 1913, and at home at his death in 1916.2, 5–7 She stands in the back row of a photograph of the whole family taken in front of the farmhouse in those years.8 In 1920, at thirty-nine, she was living with her widowed mother and working as a seamster in an overall factory.9
Some time after 1920 Alma married a man named Michel, and when her mother died in January 1934 she was Mrs. Alma Michel of Walnut, in Crawford County, Kansas.10 Her application for a Social Security number, in 1938, gives her name as Alma Krattly Michel and her parents as Sylvester Krattly and Christina Hegnauer.4 In later life she returned to Carthage, and she died on 15 July 1973, aged ninety-five.1, 11
