Life story
Elizabeth ("Lizzie") Hegnauer was born about 1876 in St. Louis, Missouri, the eldest child of Martin Hegnauer, a Swiss-born laborer, and Mary Gambler.1–2 In June 1880 Lizzie, four, was living with her parents and her little sisters Maggie and Bertha at 602 South Second Street; her brother Martin was born in 1884.1 In 1885 the family moved to Pleasant Gap Township in Bates County, and that August her mother died, when Lizzie was about nine.2 Her grandmother Katharina Gambler of St. Joseph remembered her, with her brother and sisters, in her will of 1895.3
Lizzie married first a Mr. Johnson, whose given name has not been found. By September 1908, when she and her sister Bertha went with their father to visit relatives at Carthage, she was Mrs. Lizzie Johnson, and by April 1910 she was a widow, living with her father on his farm in Rockville Township and working as a dressmaker.4–5
She married again, to A. J. Harden. As Lizzie Harden of Rockville she gave the details for her sister Maggie's death certificate in May 1926.6 In November 1926 "Jess Harding and family", perhaps her husband's family, spent a Sunday at her father's home.7 She was keeping house for her father when, on the morning of 27 March 1927, she found him unconscious; he died soon afterwards. His obituary names her as Mrs. A. J. Harden of Rockville.2
Lizzie died in 1947.8–9 Where she died and is buried has not yet been confirmed.

Find a Grave gives 1877 (see Research Notes).
Her ages, 4 in June 1880 and 34 in April 1910, point to a birth between mid-1875 and early 1876. Her father's obituary says that all four children were born in St. Louis, where the family lived until 1885, and names her first among them. Find a Grave's 1877 is less likely, since her sister Maggie was born in June 1877. No birth record has been found.

Her first marriage; known only from her married name, Lizzie Johnson (1908, 1910). She was a widow by April 1910. No marriage record has been found.
In Sept 1908 the Rockville paper named Martin Hegnauer's daughters as "Mesdames Troy Brown and Lizzie Johnson", and in 1910 Lizzie Johnson, 34, widowed, was living with her father as his daughter.

Her second marriage; she was Lizzie Harden by May 1926 and "Mrs. A. J. Harden, of Rockville" in Mar 1927. No marriage record has been found.
She was the informant, as Lizzie Harden of Rockville, for her sister Maggie's death certificate in May 1926, and her father's obituary names his daughter Mrs. A. J. Harden of Rockville; by elimination (Bertha was Mrs. Troy Brown and Maggie had died) she is Lizzie.

- Identity: Lizzie, 4, in the 1880 household of Martin and Mary in St. Louis; Lizzie, first of the four grandchildren in Katharina Gambler's 1895 will; Mrs. Lizzie Johnson, Martin's daughter, in 1908; Lizzie Johnson, 34, widowed, his daughter, in 1910 (mother born in Pennsylvania, like Mary); Lizzie Harden, informant for Maggie in 1926; and Mrs. A. J. Harden (Hardin), who kept house for Martin in 1927, are one woman.1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 2 Mrs. Harden is identified as Lizzie by elimination: Bertha was Mrs. Troy Brown, and Maggie had died. The census facts come from the Ancestry tree's attached records; Maggie's death certificate was read from the image.

- Husbands: Neither marriage record has been found. Mr. Johnson's given name, the date of their marriage (after 1895 and by 1908) and the date of his death (by 1910) are unknown. A. J. Harden's full name and the date of the second marriage (by May 1926) are unknown; "Jess Harding" (Nov 1926) may be a relative of his.7
- Death and burial: only the year, 1947, from a Find a Grave memorial seen as a link from her father's memorial.8, 9 The memorial should be opened for the cemetery (probably Rockville) and full dates, and the Missouri death certificate of 1947 sought under Harden.
- Not her: her first cousin once removed Lizzie K. Hegnauer (born 1895), daughter of Christian Hegnauer, who married Albert J. Durst in 1919. The WikiTree profile Johnson-108536 (Elizabeth Johnson, 1875–1967, Jackson Township, Ocean County, New Jersey) is another woman.
