Life story
Gasconade County
Barbara Hegnauer was born on 1 June 1859 in Gasconade County, Missouri, probably in Boeuf Township, where her family was farming the next year.1–3 She was the youngest of the six known children of Luzius Hegnauer and Anna Margreth Bernet, and the only one born in America. Her parents had come from Switzerland in 1856, three years before she was born, with her four older brothers and her sister, John, Leonhard, Christina, Martin and Christian, and had settled in Gasconade County.3–4 In September 1860 the census taker found "Barbara", aged one, the baby of her father's household in Boeuf Township, post office Hermann, with Swiss families on the neighbouring farms.3 No record of her baptism has been found.
Bates County and marriage
Where the family lived during the 1870s is not known. By June 1880 Barbara, twenty, was keeping house with her mother in Prairie Township, Bates County, in the home of her unmarried brother Christian, who farmed there with their father; the census taker wrote her name as "Barberry Heagnor".5 Her obituary said that she had come to Bates County from Gasconade County.6
On 23 March 1883 the county recorder at Butler issued a marriage licence to Robert Kamm and "Barbrie Hegnauer", both of Papinville. Five days later, on 28 March 1883, a justice of the peace married them "at the residence of the bride".7–8 Robert, then twenty-six, had been born at Highland, Illinois, to Swiss-born parents, and had come to Bates County as a boy.2, 9–10 In 1877 two landowners named Kamm, "J. P. Kamm" and "J. Kamm", held land in Pleasant Gap Township in the sections next to the farm of "L. Hegnauer", probably her brother Leonhard; whether they were Robert's kin is not yet known.11
Farm wife at Pleasant Gap
The couple settled in Pleasant Gap Township, where their first child, Maggie Elizabeth, was born on 14 December 1883. The birth registers name the mother as Barbara Kamm, née Hegnauer, twenty-four, born in Gasconade County.2, 12 They probably also had a daughter Anna, born on 20 February 1886: an Anna Kamm of that birth date died on 18 September 1895, aged nine, and lies in the Reform Cemetery at Pleasant Gap under a stone said to read "Daughter of R & B Kamm" (see Research Notes).13 Christina Louise was born on 5 January 1889 in Bates County,14 Lizzie B. (Elizabeth Barbara) in May 1893, Robert John in March 1896 and Oscar W. (Oscar William) in June 1899.9, 15
In June 1900 the family was renting a farm in Pleasant Gap Township. The census taker, Leonard Hegnauer, was probably her nephew, the son of her brother Leonhard. He recorded that Barbara had borne seven children, of whom five were living.9 Her last child, Bertha, was born early in 1903, to judge by her ages in the next two censuses.16–17
Rich Hill
By April 1910 the Kamms had moved to a rented farm in Osage Township, outside Rich Hill. Barbara, fifty, had now borne eight children, six of them living, and all six were at home. The Grill family lived next door; their son John P. Grill later married Christina.16–17 When her brother Leonhard died in 1916, his obituary listed her among his surviving sisters as "Mrs. Kamm of Rich Hill".4 In January 1920 Robert ran a dairy farm there, with Margaret, Robert, Oscar and Bertha at home and Christina and John Grill on the next farm.17
Death
Barbara died of influenza on Saturday night, 6 January 1923, at her home in Osage Township, a mile and a half east of Rich Hill, after an illness of several weeks. She was sixty-three.1, 6, 18 "She was a most estimable woman, a good mother and neighbor," wrote the Rich Hill paper, "and a member of the Reform Church."6 The Bates County Republican remembered her as "a popular resident of her community where she will be greatly missed".18 Her funeral was held at the home on the afternoon of Tuesday, 9 January, conducted by Rev. E. D. Lewis. "Many beautiful flowers silently attested the feeling of the friends," the Republican wrote, and at the close of the service she was laid to rest in Green Lawn Cemetery at Rich Hill.1, 6, 18–20 She was survived by her husband and six children: Mrs. John Grill (Christina), Mrs. Edward McVicker (Lizzie), Maggie and Bertha, and Robert and Oscar, who were at home.6, 15, 21 Robert died on 24 January 1934 and was buried with her in the family lot, under a shared stone inscribed "Robert 1857–1934, His Wife Barbara 1859–1923, At Rest".10, 15

The 1900 census gives "June 1859", the gravestone and the Ellsberry cemetery index give 1859, and the 1883 birth registers give her age as 24 in Dec 1883. Her census ages fit 1859 to within a year, but not all of them exactly: 1 in 1860 and 50 in April 1910 fit, while 20 in June 1880, 40 in June 1900 and 59 in January 1920 (perhaps altered from 60) are each a year less than a birth on 1 Jun 1859 gives on the census day. The obituaries' 64 is a year too high. The county is stated in the two 1883 Bates County birth-register entries for her first child ("Gasconade Co., Mo.", mother aged 24), which are two copies of one physician's return, and her obituary says she came to Bates County from Gasconade County. The Bates County marriage licence and its return (Marriage License Record p. 237) give the licence date, the marriage on 28 Mar 1883 at the bride's residence and the filing on 29 Mar. The Missouri Compiled Marriages index agrees on the date. The 1900 census (married 17 years) and the 1910 census (married 27 years) both point to 1883. The Missouri Marriage Records index's "age 18, born about 1865" is a misreading of the printed phrase "over the age of eighteen years", and its "Robert Ramm" is a misreading of Kamm.

Her Missouri death certificate, made at the time (physician's certificate; filed 8 Jan 1923), gives 6 Jan 1923 in Osage Township, Bates County; "Rich Hill" is typed in the city space and apparently struck through. Two independent obituaries give "Saturday night, Jan. 6, 1923"; the Rich Hill Mining Review adds that she died at her home "one and one-half miles east" [of Rich Hill], which was probably outside the city. Rich Hill City itself lies within Osage Township (1910 and 1920 census headings), so the township is right either way. The Find a Grave memorial agrees on the date. The certificate identifies her by her husband Robert Kamm and by her birth date, 1 Jun 1859.

The Rich Hill obituary, written before the funeral, announced the service at the home at 2 p.m. Tuesday [9 Jan 1923] with "Burial in Greenlawn cemetery". The Bates County Republican, published after it, reported the service at the home on Tuesday afternoon and that "at the close she was laid to rest in Greenlawn Cemetery"; a Prairie City correspondent reported the funeral at Rich Hill on Tuesday. Two independent gravestone readings, the Ellsberry cemetery survey and the Find a Grave memorial with photographs of the shared Kamm stone, place her in the cemetery.

The Missouri Compiled Marriages index agrees on the date. The 1900 census (married 17 years) and the 1910 census (married 27 years) both point to 1883. Died on Saturday night, 6 Jan 1923, at her home 1½ miles east of Rich Hill, after an illness of several weeks; cause influenza (attended 1-6 Jan). Age 63 years 7 months 5 days (death certificate; the obituaries say 64).
Her Missouri death certificate, made at the time (physician's certificate; filed 8 Jan 1923), gives 6 Jan 1923 in Osage Township, Bates County; "Rich Hill" is typed in the city space and apparently struck through. Two independent obituaries give "Saturday night, Jan. 6, 1923"; the Rich Hill Mining Review adds that she died at her home "one and one-half miles east" [of Rich Hill], which was probably outside the city. Rich Hill City itself lies within Osage Township (1910 and 1920 census headings), so the township is right either way. The Find a Grave memorial agrees on the date. The certificate identifies her by her husband Robert Kamm and by her birth date, 1 Jun 1859.

The Rich Hill obituary, written before the funeral, announced the service at the home at 2 p.m. Tuesday [9 Jan 1923] with "Burial in Greenlawn cemetery". The Bates County Republican, published after it, reported the service at the home on Tuesday afternoon and that "at the close she was laid to rest in Greenlawn Cemetery"; a Prairie City correspondent reported the funeral at Rich Hill on Tuesday. Two independent gravestone readings, the Ellsberry cemetery survey and the Find a Grave memorial with photographs of the shared Kamm stone, place her in the cemetery.

Research notes
- Birth: 1 Jun 1859 rests on her death certificate, where her husband was the informant. The 1900 census gives "June 1859", and the gravestone and the 1883 birth registers (24 in Dec 1883) fit 1859. Her census ages agree only to within a year. 1 (1860) and 50 (April 1910) fit exactly. 20 (June 1880), 40 (June 1900) and 59 (January 1920, perhaps altered from 60) are each a year less than a birth on 1 Jun 1859 gives on the census day; the 1880 and 1900 ages would fit a birthday later in June. The obituaries' 64 is a year too high. 1 Jun 1859 is kept as the only exact date. Gasconade County is stated in both 1883 Bates County birth-register entries for her first child, which are two copies of one physician's return, and her obituary says she came to Bates County from Gasconade County. Boeuf Township is inferred from the family's residence in September 1860 and is probable, not proven, so the birth place is given at county level. Online trees that give "Boeuf, Gasconade" as her birthplace are stating this inference as fact. No baptism has been found. The Reformed or Evangelical congregations near Hermann and in Boeuf Township (1859) are the next place to look.
- The 1870s: She has not been found in the 1870 census. Searches for her name, and for her parents and brother Christian, found nothing. Her obituary says she lived in Bates County "about forty years" (from about 1883), "coming here from Gasconade county". But the June 1880 census already places her in Prairie Township, Bates County, so "forty years" is a round figure. It does suggest that she and her parents came to Bates County directly from Gasconade County, some time before 1880, rather than by way of Illinois.
- Marriage: The licence was issued on 23 Mar 1883 and the marriage took place on 28 Mar 1883 (the justice's return); the licence date is not the wedding date. The Compiled Marriages index and the FamilySearch index give 28 Mar 1883, and the 1900 and 1910 censuses (married 17 and 27 years) agree on 1883; no source gives another date. The licence and return (Marriage License Record p. 237) are the original record behind the Compiled Marriages index. The Marriage Records index gives her "age 18, born about 1865" (FamilySearch's index has "birth 1865"). That is a misreading of the printed form's "over the age of eighteen years"; the licence gives no ages. It also indexes Robert as "Ramm". FamilySearch standardizes the place to Butler, the recorder's office; the marriage itself took place at the bride's residence, probably her parents' or her brother Christian's home near Papinville. The justice's name is only partly legible (J. H. C[linton?]).
- Place of death: The death certificate gives Osage Township, Bates County; "Rich Hill" is typed on the city line and apparently struck through. The Rich Hill obituary places her home "one and one-half miles east" [of Rich Hill], and the 1910 and 1920 census headings show that Rich Hill City lies within Osage Township, so Osage Township is right whether or not the home was inside the city limits. "Rich Hill" in her brother's 1916 obituary and as her husband's address on the certificate is the town and post office, not a statement that she died in the city. Find a Grave gives only "Bates County". Earlier versions of her WikiTree profile gave her death year as 1939; no record supports that, and the certificate, both obituaries, the cemetery index and the gravestone all give 1923.
- Burial: The date, 9 Jan 1923, is inferred, not recorded: the death certificate leaves the burial date blank. The Rich Hill obituary, written before the funeral (it was reprinted at Butler on the day itself), announced the service at the home at 2 p.m. Tuesday with burial in Greenlawn. The Bates County Republican of 12 Jan reported that "at the close" of Tuesday's service she was laid to rest in Greenlawn Cemetery, and a Prairie City correspondent reported the funeral at Rich Hill on Tuesday. The cemetery is written "Green Lawn" on the death certificate and Find a Grave and "Greenlawn" in the obituaries and the Ellsberry index. The place is recorded at town level, Rich Hill, as on Find a Grave; whether the cemetery lies inside the city limits has not been checked.
- Age at death: 63 years 7 months 5 days (death certificate). Both obituaries and the Ellsberry cemetery index give 64.
- Her parents on the death certificate: her husband gave her father's name as "Lucinda Hegner er" [Lucius Hegnauer] and did not know her mother's name or birthplace. Her daughter Christina's 1965 death certificate gives the mother's maiden name as "Barbara Hagnaur".14
- Children: The 1900 census gives 7 born and 5 living, and the 1910 census 8 born and 6 living. Eight are accounted for as follows. (1) Maggie (Margaret Elizabeth), born 14 Dec 1883; the birth registers are preferred to Find a Grave's "1 Dec 1885". (2) Anna, 20 Feb 1886 – 18 Sep 1895, Reform Cemetery. She is known only from a Find a Grave memorial whose inscription ("Daughter of R & B Kamm") is the contributor's reading of a stone now illegible in the photograph; the memorial's own text gives "Daughter of B & B Kamm", so even the initials are not certain. The memorial is linked to Robert's and Barbara's memorials as parents, but that is the contributor's link, not independent evidence. Her dates fit the gap between Maggie and Christina, the cemetery lies in the township where the family lived in 1883 and 1900, no other Kamm couple with those initials is known there, and she accounts for one of the two children dead by 1900. She is therefore probable, not proven; her death notice has not been found. The "Anna A Kamm" (1891–1893) in the same cemetery is linked on Find a Grave to Fred and Fredericka Kamm, not to Barbara. (3) Christina Louise, born 5 Jan 1889 (her death certificate); she married John P. Grill by 1920 and died on 12 Dec 1965. (4) One child who died before June 1900: name, sex and dates unknown. The four-year gap between Christina (Jan 1889) and Lizzie (May 1893) is the likeliest place for this child, but that is only an inference. (5) Lizzie B. (Elizabeth Barbara), born May 1893 (1900 census; Find a Grave gives 22 May 1893); she married Edward McVicker. (6) Robert John Jr., born Mar 1896. (7) Oscar William, born Jun 1899. (8) Bertha (Bertha May), aged 7 in April 1910 and 16 in January 1920. Both ages fit only a birth between January and mid-April 1903, so the tree's "Abt. 1904" is a year late; Find a Grave gives 1903. The later children are not indexed in the Bates County birth registers under Kamm; the Permanent Record of Births (1883–1907) could be browsed page by page. The full names Elizabeth Barbara, Oscar William and Bertha May come from Find a Grave and a member tree, not from records seen.
- "Barberry": Find a Grave and one member tree give her a middle name "Barberry". It is only the 1880 census's spelling of Barbara, and no record gives her a middle name. It is not adopted.
- The Kamm family: Robert was born in February 1857 (1900 census; the tree gives 2 Feb 1857) at Highland, Illinois (1883 birth registers). His obituary says he came to Bates County "when a boy from Illinois".10 His parents' birthplace is Switzerland in the 1900 and 1920 censuses and Germany in 1910. He may have been a son of John Peter Kamm (8 May 1822 – 7 Jun 1903, Reform Cemetery), the "J. P. Kamm" of the 1877 plat, whose land lay next to that of "L. Hegnauer" (probably her brother Leonhard).11 That rests only on the surname, Swiss origin and neighbourhood; no record yet links them, and another Kamm ("J. Kamm") also held land there. If he was, the March 1890 quitclaim "Leonard Hegnauer et al to John Kamm" of an undivided interest in the SE¼ of Sec. 27, T39N R30W, may have been a transfer from Barbara's family to her father-in-law, although "et al" may mean no more than Leonhard's wife.22 The other grantors, and whether Barbara was one of them, are not known; the Bates County deed books would show. Robert's parentage is left to be worked out on his own profile.
- Church: Both obituaries call her a member of the Reform Church, without naming the congregation. Her brother Leonhard was a devoted member of the German Reformed church north of Prairie City, and his funeral was held there in 1916;4 her probable daughter Anna lies in the Reform Cemetery at Pleasant Gap, presumably that congregation's burial ground. The church of Rev. E. D. Lewis, who conducted her funeral in 1923, has not been identified.
- Open questions: her baptism (1859); the family's whereabouts in 1870; the name of the child who died before 1900, and Anna's death notice (Bates County papers, Sep 1895); whether her aged parents lived with her after 1884 (see her mother's profile); whether her father's pension file (certificate 638,825) contains affidavits by her; and the grantors of the 1890 quitclaim.
