Life story
Emma Krattly was born about 1888 in Jasper County, Missouri, the youngest child of Sylvester Krattly and Christina Hegnauer, Swiss-born farmers of Marion Township.1–2 Like her sister Anna, she stayed single, at least until 1949, and made her life on the family farm west of Carthage. She was one of the three unmarried daughters remembered in her father's will of 1913 and was at home at his death in 1916.3–4 She sits in the front row, beside her mother, in a photograph of the whole family taken in front of the farmhouse in those years.5 In 1930, at forty, she was sewing in a clothing factory and living with her mother, her brother Sylvester and Anna.6–7
It was Emma who gave the particulars for her mother's death certificate in January 1934, and for Anna's in September 1949, from the old address on Route 4, Carthage.8–10 Find a Grave gives her death in 1981, when she would have been about ninety-three.11
