Life story
Christian Herman Hegnauer was born on 24 March 1897 in Pleasant Gap Township, Bates County, Missouri, the younger son of Christian Hegnauer and Anna Wirz.1–2 He grew up on his parents' farm with his brother Leonard Samuel and his sisters Lena, Clara, Rosa, Lizzie and Marie, and was still at home in 1910.2–3 He registered for the draft in Bates County during the First World War.1 An application for a military headstone was made after his death, so he had evidently served in the armed forces, probably in that war; his service record has not been found.4
Christian married Emma J. Wix, a Missouri woman three years younger than he; when and where has not been found. In 1935 both were living in rural Bates County, and by 1940 they had moved north to the village of Mapleton, in Blue Earth County, Minnesota, where Christian was a traveling salesman.5 He registered there for the draft again on 14 February 1942, naming Emma.6
Christian died at Mankato, the county seat, on 27 November 1951, aged 54, and was buried in Union Cemetery at Mapleton.7–9 His Minnesota death record names his parents, Chris Hegnauer and Anna Wirtz.7 Emma survived him by 27 years and was buried in the same cemetery in 1979.9

- Identity: The Christian of the 1900 and 1910 censuses, son of Christian and Anna, is Christian Herman Hegnauer, born 24 Mar 1897 (WWI and WWII draft cards, Social Security).2, 3, 1, 6, 10 His Minnesota death record names his parents as Chris Hegnauer and Anna Wirtz, and his father's 1957 obituary lists a son Christian who had died in 1951.7, 11 The 1940 census has him at Mapleton, with a residence in rural Bates County in 1935.5 The facts come from the Ancestry tree's attached records and FamilySearch's indexes; no image has been read.
- Military service: The headstone application (Ancestry 2375/146940) has not been read; it should give his branch, unit and dates of service.4 No WWI service record has been seen.
- Marriage: No record has been found. Emma J. is his wife in the 1940 census, on his 1942 draft card and in his 1951 death record.5, 6, 7 The 1940 census gives both of them a rural Bates County residence in 1935, so the marriage may be recorded in Bates County.
- Children: none are known; the 1940 household had only the couple.5
- Minnesota: His uncle Robert Lucius Hegnauer of Wells, Minnesota, worked for the Frank Brothers Distributing Co. of Mapleton in 1942 (see his profile), which may explain the nephew's move there; whether Christian worked for the same firm is not known. Christian's 1930 residence has not been found. The 1930 Faribault County divorce "Hegnauer vs. Hegnauer" has been attributed to his uncle Robert; Christian's 1935 residence in Bates County makes him an unlikely alternative.
