Bates County

Leonard Samuel Hegnauer was born on 21 March 1891 at Rockville, in Bates County, Missouri, the third child and elder son of Christian Hegnauer and Anna Wirz.1–2 His names were those of his two grandfathers, Leonhard Hegnauer and Samuel Wirz. He grew up on his parents' farm in Pleasant Gap Township with his sisters Lena, Clara, Rosa, Lizzie and Marie and his brother Christian, and in 1910, aged nineteen and still single, he was working as a laborer at home.2–3

Leonard married Anna K. Yoss, probably about 1913. By the time he registered for the draft in 1917 he was a married man, and in January 1920 the census found him in Prairie Township, Bates County, with Anna and their four children, Lotta M., Robert L., Naomi R. and Leonard Y.1, 4–5

Minister in Ohio

Leonard became a minister. The family had moved to Illinois by about 1923, when their daughter Delores was born there, and by 1940 they were living at Canton, Ohio, which was his home for the rest of his life.6 He was the informant for both his parents' death certificates, as "L. S. Hegnauer, Canton, Ohio" when his mother died in 1943, and as Leonard Hegnauer of Canton when his father died in 1957; his father's obituary names him as "the Rev. Leonard Hegnauer of Canton, O.".7–9 In 1950 he and Anna were living in Canton, their children grown.10 In August 1960, aged sixty-nine, he returned to New York from a journey abroad.11

Anna died at Canton on 23 April 1961.5 Leonard died in Stark County on 24 June 1978, aged 87, and was buried in West Lawn Cemetery, Canton, where Anna also lies.12–14
