Luzius Hegnauer, known in America as Lucius, was baptised on 8 December 1819 at Igis, a village in the Rhine valley of Graubünden, Switzerland.1 In 1856 he took his wife and their five children to America. He farmed in Gasconade County, Missouri, served in the Union army in his forties, and spent his last known years in Bates County, Missouri.2, 3, 4, 5

Igis and the voyage

Luzius was the son of Jakob Hegnauer and Christina Pleisch.1 On 14 June 1840, at twenty, he married Anna Margreth Bernet in the Igis church.6 Over the next eleven years they brought five children there for baptism: Johannes (John), born 13 November 1840;7 Leonhard, born 25 April 1843;8 Christina, born 26 October 1845;9 Martin, born 20 February 1848;10 and Christian, born 18 February 1851.11 The eldest son, Johannes, bore the name of Margreth's father, and the elder daughter, Christina, that of Luzius's mother.6, 1

After the food shortages of 1848–50 many people in Graubünden decided to emigrate for good, and from the 1850s the United States was the country they chose most often.12 In 1856 Luzius and Margreth joined them with all five children. They sailed from Le Havre on the ship Chace on 22 August 1856 and reached New York on 29 September, among about two hundred passengers.13 The passenger list names them as Lucie, 36, Marguerite, 37, and the children Johann, 15, Leonhard, 13, Christian[e], 10, Martin, 8, and Christian, 5.2

Gasconade County, Missouri

The family seems to have gone first to Highland, in Madison County, Illinois, where Margreth's elder sister Barbara was living with her family by 1860, and to have moved on to Missouri soon afterwards.14, 15, 16 There they settled in Boeuf Township, Gasconade County.17, 3 Germans had settled in large numbers in the Missouri River valley in the 1830s and 1840s,18 and Hermann, a town on the Missouri River, had been laid out in 1837 by the German Settlement Association of Philadelphia; a post office in the north-west of Boeuf Township was later named Swiss, because most of the people there came from Switzerland.19 Luzius seems to have been dealing in land within a year of landing,20 and in October 1858 he very probably witnessed the wedding of Adam Fetter and Mrs. Dorothea Merkel at the house of Henry Domeyer in Boeuf Township.21 When the census taker came in 1860 he found "Luzi" Hegnauer, 41, farming, with his older sons John and Leonhard as farmhands and the younger children at home. The youngest, Barbara, had been born in Missouri about 1859, the only one of the six children born in America.3

The county's deed books describe the farm. In May 1860 it was 80 acres in Section 23 of Township 44 North, Range 5 West, when Luzi and Margaretha mortgaged it to secure notes of $200 to Peter Krattly and $250 to Ernst Heck.22 Margaretha joined her husband in every one of their deeds. In March 1864 they borrowed $500 on the land from Hermann Kemper, at 6 per cent,23 and by March 1868, when they gave Kemper a second mortgage, for $700 at 7 per cent, the farm had grown to 120 acres with the forty acres adjoining it on the east.24 On 26 December 1868 they sold the 120 acres to Kemper for $1,200; the deed was recorded on 6 April 1870.25 Where they lived next is not known. Their daughter Christina was still living in the county in 1869, when she married Sylvester Krattly, a Swiss farmer whose family had settled near Hermann.26

Civil War service

When the war came to Missouri in 1861, the county raised Home Guards around Hermann to guard the Pacific Railroad bridges; they served until they were disbanded on 1 October 1861.27 Luzius and his son Leonhard very probably served in them together, as privates in Captain Stocklin's company.28 On 18 November 1861, although he was nearly forty-two, Luzius enlisted at Hermann for three years as a private in Company D of the Gasconade County Battalion of the U.S. Reserve Corps.4 The company descriptive book shows a man of 5 feet 6 inches with a dark complexion, grey eyes and brown hair, a farmer born at "Igis Switzerland".29, 30 In January 1862 his company became Company F of the 4th Missouri Infantry, the regiment in which Leonhard served in Company E. Its duty was to guard the railroad: in June 1862 General John M. Schofield wrote that he was "relying on Hundhausen", the regiment's commander, "to guard the entire Pacific Railroad as far as the Osage".31 Luzius was present on every muster roll of 1862 and was mustered out at Benton Barracks, St. Louis, on 1 February 1863, aged 43.4

He still held his farm when the war came back to the county. In early October 1864 Sterling Price's Confederate army crossed Gasconade County on its raid through Missouri and took Hermann on the evening of 3 October.32 On 18 October Luzius very probably swore an affidavit, now among the Union provost marshals' papers, that on 4 October Henry Domeyer, at whose house the wedding of 1858 had been held, had "betrayed union men in his neighborhood to the rebels".33, 21

Bates County

Bates County, on the Kansas border, had been emptied during the war. In August 1863 the Union army's General Order No. 11 had ordered the people of Bates and three other border counties from their homes; thousands returned after the war, but many never did.34 Leonhard settled in the county in 1869,35 and by 1880 his parents lived there too: that June Luzius, 60 and still farming, and Margreth were in Prairie Township in the household of their unmarried son Christian, with their daughter Barbara.36 Barbara married Robert Kamm "at the residence of the bride" in March 1883, when both were "of Papinville".37 Barbara's obituary, forty years later, says that she came to Bates County from Gasconade County.38 In 1884 the county directory listed Luzius, a farmer, and Margreth in Pleasant Gap Township, next to Leonhard, with their post office at Papinville.39

In June 1890 Luzius was listed at Pleasant Gap, his post office still at Papinville, on the special census schedule of surviving Union veterans.5 On 15 July 1890 he applied for an invalid pension for his service in the 4th Missouri Infantry, evidently under the new pension act of that June, and a certificate was later issued on his claim;40, 41 on 21 August 1891 two Kansas City papers, the Times and the Star, printed "Luzius Hegnauer" in their lists of the Missouri pensions just granted.42, 43

He is last known to have been alive in July 1890, at seventy. When and where he died is not known; no notice of his death or burial has been found, and no widow ever applied for his pension.40 He left a large family. When Leonhard died in 1916, his three brothers and two sisters were all still living, the sisters at Carthage and Rich Hill, Missouri,17 and the death certificates of Leonhard (1916), Martin (1927) and Christina (1934) in Missouri, and of Christian (1935) in Oregon, name Luzius as their father.44, 45, 46, 47

Baptized at Igis on 8 Dec 1819. His 1861 Union descriptive book gives his birthplace as "Igis Switzerland".

Only the baptism (8 Dec 1819, Igis) is recorded, so he was born on or shortly before that day. The Union Army descriptive book, made in Missouri in 1861 without reference to the Swiss register, names Igis as his birthplace. His ages on the 1856 passenger list (36), the 1863 muster-out roll (43) and the 1880 census (60) fit exactly; the 1860 census (41) and the 1861 descriptive book (42) are a year high. The 1884 county directory's 1813 and "Germany" are errors in a derivative compilation.

Research notes

  • Sources: His Swiss records are from FamilySearch's index of the Igis Reformed registers; the register images have not been viewed. His Gasconade County land, the 1858 marriage certificate, the Home Guard cards and the 1864 affidavit are known only from FamilySearch Full-Text machine transcriptions, not from the images. The historical background is from the Historisches Lexikon der Schweiz, the State Historical Society of Missouri, Goodspeed's county history of 1888 and the Official Records.
  • Arrival: The ship Chace (printed "Chase" on the list and in the New York Herald) sailed from Le Havre on 22 Aug 1856 and arrived at New York on 29 Sep 1856 (New York Herald and New-York Daily Tribune of 30 Sep); the passenger list is dated 30 Sep (NARA and Ancestry), probably the day it was filed, and gives the family as "Hegemann".13, 2 Leonhard's obituary (1916) and the Bates County history (1918) also give 1856,17, 35 but in the 1900 census the sons gave 1851 (John), 1855 (Christian) and 1856 (Leonhard);48 the contemporary list is preferred. Ancestry's index misreads the ages of Lucie, Marguerite and Johann as 26, 39 and 19; the image reads 36, 37 and 15. The list marks "Lucie" as female.
  • Where the family settled: The 1918 Bates County history says the parents made a "permanent settlement in Madison county, Illinois" in 1856, and the 1883 county history's sketch of Leonard also has the family going to Madison County in 1856.15 His son Martin's obituary (1927) also says the family settled first "in Highland, Ill., later moving to Gasconade County Mo.", so three accounts from two branches of the family (1883, 1918, 1927) agree on a first stop in Madison County, Illinois.14 It can only have been short, and it is now graded probable. Luzius was probably dealing in land in Gasconade County in 1857, a "Luzius Hegnaner" witnessed a marriage in Boeuf Township in 1858, Barbara was born in Gasconade County in 1859, the family was there in 1860, and Luzius held a farm there from 1860 at the latest until Dec 1868.20, 21, 22, 25 Margreth's sister Barbara Tontz was living in Township 4 N, Range 5 W, of Madison County (the Highland area) by 1860, which may explain the choice.16 Martin's "1854" is wrong. Leonhard's obituary (1916) says only that the family first settled in Gasconade County.17 It was Leonhard and John who lived in Madison County after the war.
  • Gasconade County land (FamilySearch Full-Text, 27 Sep 2026): Only the machine transcriptions have been read, not the images. They render the surname Hegnaner or Hegenaner, and Luzi as "Lucy", "Suze" and "Luze". The couple mortgaged 80 acres in Sec. 23, T44N, R5W (the SW¼ SE¼ and the SE¼ SW¼) on 23 May 1860 (filed 31 Jul 1865) and again on 3 Mar 1864 (filed 2 May 1866). On 3 Mar 1868 they mortgaged 120 acres (the S½ SE¼ and the SE¼ SW¼), so they had added the SE¼ SE¼ in the meantime, and on 26 Dec 1868 they sold the 120 acres to Herman Kemper (recorded 6 Apr 1870).22, 23, 24, 25 The deeds by which they bought the land have not been found. The 1857 index entries, "Hegenaner Luzi" with "Tolfern [?] Carolina" in a mortgage of 10 Aug 1857 and "Hegenaner Lucke" with John Miller, may record the first purchase, but the transcription does not show which party was the grantor, so they are only probably his.20 Peter Krattly, one of the 1860 creditors, shares the surname of the Swiss family near Hermann into which Christina married about 1869 (her husband was Sylvester Krattly; see her profile); whether the two were related is not known. Which civil township Sec. 23, T44N, R5W lies in has not been checked on a map; the family was enumerated in Boeuf Township in 1860. Next steps: the deed images, the purchase deeds and the county tax lists.
  • Marriage witness, 1858 (probable): The certificate of the marriage of Adam Fetter and Mrs. Dorothea Merkel, 11 Oct 1858, "at the house of Henry Domeyer" in Boeuf Township, names Domeyer and "Luzius Hegnaner" as witnesses (machine transcription).21 Hegnaner is the machine reading of Hegnauer found in his own deeds, no other Luzius Hegnauer is known in America, and his family was in Boeuf Township in 1860; but the certificate gives nothing else to identify the witness.
  • Home Guard (probable): The cards read "Hegenauer, Lazurus", Pvt, Capt. Stocklin's Co., 1st Batt., Gasconade County Home Guards, and "Hegenaner [Hegenauer], Lucius", Capt. Stoucklin's Co. (D), with allowances made by the Hawkins Taylor Commission, which examined the Home Guards' claims for pay; a third card is for "Hegenauer, Leonard" of the same company.28 "Lazurus" is taken to be a clerk's or transcriber's error for Lucius. A Lucius and a Leonard Hegenauer serving together fit only Luzius and his son Leonhard, who both enlisted at Hermann in Oct–Nov 1861 in the Reserve Corps battalion formed from the Home Guards after they were disbanded on 1 Oct 1861.27 The cards give no age, residence or dates, and only the machine transcriptions have been read, so the service is probable, not proven.
  • Descriptive book (two readings): The descriptive-book card read on Fold3 gives his birthplace as "Igis Switzerland".29 FamilySearch's machine transcription of the descriptive-book page reads only "born Switzerland", but agrees in every other particular: age 42, 5 ft 6 in, dark complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, farmer, enlisted 18 Nov 1861 at Hermann.30 The machine transcription probably dropped the short, unfamiliar word; the two images should be compared to confirm the Igis reading.
  • Enlistment date: 18 Nov 1861 at Hermann (service record) against 15 Aug 1862 on the 1890 veterans schedule. The service record is contemporary and is preferred.
  • Affidavit of 1864 (probable): The affidavit of 18 Oct 1864, sworn by "Lucius Hegnaner" (also transcribed "Lizurs Hegenne"), accuses Henry Domeyer of betraying Union men in his neighbourhood to the rebels on 4 Oct 1864, when Price's army was passing through the county.33, 32 The deponent is taken to be Luzius because a "Luzius Hegnaner" had witnessed a wedding at Domeyer's house in Boeuf Township in 1858, and Luzius still owned his Gasconade farm in 1864.21, 23 Only the machine transcription has been read; the whole file may name the deponent's residence.
  • After the sale of the farm (1869–1880): Christina was "of this county" (Gasconade) when she married Sylvester Krattly ("Kraettly" in his obituary) in 1869.26 Barbara's obituary (1923) says she came to Bates County from Gasconade County, which suggests that her parents, with whom she lived, moved there directly; it gives no year.38 The family is still unfound in 1870.
  • 1870 census: Not found. Index searches under every variant in Bates, Gasconade, St. Clair and Madison (Illinois) counties found neither parent, nor Christian (about 19) or Barbara (about 11), who were presumably still living with them. On 27 Sep 2026 the schedules were then read page by page, using the line-by-line index Ancestry shows beside each image (name, age, sex and birthplace), and every image that Ancestry's browse leaves out was opened on FamilySearch. Bates County (NARA M593, roll 758, all 440 images): all thirteen districts, namely Boone (images 5–36), Charlotte (37–71), Deer Creek (73–99), Grand River (102–127), Lone Oak (130–164), Mingo (166–185), Mount Pleasant (186–228), Butler (232–261), Osage (262–274), Prairie City (278–322, the 45 pages around Leonhard's page 24 on image 301), Pleasant Gap (326–366), Spruce (370–408) and Walnut (411–437). Every household with a foreign-born member was read in full. Gasconade County (roll 776, all 268 images): all nine districts, namely Hermann (images 129–162), Roark (191–233), Brush Creek (65–79), Canaan (101–128), Boulware (37–61), Bourbois (81–100), Third Creek (237–267), Boeuf (5–36) and Richland (163–190). The dwellings are numbered 1–1909 without a gap through the county, so no page is missing; every household with a foreign-born adult aged 44–58, a girl named B… aged 8–14 or a youth named Chr… aged 16–23 was read in full. Madison County, Illinois: Township 5 Range 5 (Grantfork, where his son John lived; images 96–111), Township 4 Range 5 (74–94) and Township 3 Range 5 (Highland; 6–73), read in the same way. Apart from Gasconade image 9, a Boeuf page that Ancestry's browse leaves out and which was read on FamilySearch, the remaining images in both Missouri counties are film targets, blank forms, enumerators' certificates and re-filmed duplicates of pages already read. No household on these pages fits Luzius (about 50) and Margaretha (about 51) with Christian and Barbara, under any surname. FamilySearch index searches of all Missouri for Swiss-born women named Marg… born 1815–1823 (13 entries), Swiss-born men named L… born 1815–1823 (21) and Swiss-born women named Christ… born 1843–1848 (2) found no one who fits. Not yet read: the counties next to Bates (St. Clair, Henry, Vernon, Cass) and to Gasconade (Osage, Maries, Franklin, Warren, Montgomery), St. Louis, and the rest of Madison County. The family may have been between homes: Luzius and Margaretha had sold their Gasconade farm on 26 Dec 1868 (deed recorded 6 Apr 1870).25
  • 1884 directory: It gives his birthplace as Germany and his birth year as 1813 (his wife 1815), and his wife's maiden name as "M. Barnett". The wife's maiden name and his place beside his son Leonhard identify him; the other details are the directory's errors. A possible namesake is his elder brother Leonhard, baptised at Igis on 14 Jun 1812 (fate unknown), who would fit "1813" better. But no American record of that Leonhard has been found, the wife's maiden name is that of Luzius's wife, and if this entry were not Luzius's he would be missing from the directory, although he lived in Pleasant Gap in 1890.39
  • Land in Bates County: The 1895 plat's "L. Hegnauer 80" in Sec. 36, Pleasant Gap, is attributed to Leonhard, not Luzius. It is the tract where the 1877 atlas shows an "L. Hegnau[e]r" house, and in 1880 Leonhard lived in Pleasant Gap Township while Luzius lived with Christian in Prairie Township. Another Ancestry user has added "Lucius" as an alternate name to that index entry. A March 1890 quitclaim by "Leonard Hegnauer et al" to John Kamm of an undivided interest in the SE¼ of Sec. 27, T39N R30W (Butler Daily Democrat, 21 Mar 1890) may involve the wider family, although "et al" may mean only Leonhard's wife. The Bates County deed books would name all the grantors.
  • "L. Hegnauer" in Bates County newspapers, 1885–1893: Five items name an "L. Hegnauer" without a full given name: a taxpayers' call on the railroad bonds of the old Prairie Township (1885); a Willow Branch bridge petition and a Shire-horse company (1891); an organ bought by "one of oldest settlers in Pleasant Gap neighborhood" (1892); and a petit juror (1893). All are attributed to his son Leonhard. The reasons: the items concern landholders and public business, Luzius is not known to have owned land in Bates County, "oldest settlers" means earliest settlers (Leonhard came in 1869–70, and Luzius is not recorded in the county before 1880), the fellow signers were Leonhard's associates, and Luzius was 73 in 1893 (the study's Newspapers.com search and its review, 27 Sep 2026).
  • Death: Not found. He was alive on 15 Jul 1890, when he applied for a pension. Certificate 638,825 was issued later (the date of issue is not on the index cards), and the grant was printed in the Kansas City Times and the Kansas City Star of 21 Aug 1891, one list printed twice.42, 43 That fits his being alive in mid-1891, but a claim could be completed after a claimant's death, so the death is still dated only "after 15 Jul 1890". He is not in the 1900 census index, the Find a Grave index has no memorial for him or Margreth, and the Missouri probate index has no Bates County Hegnauer entry. No death, funeral, burial or estate notice was found on Newspapers.com (27 Sep 2026). About 230 queries covered Missouri, Kansas, Illinois and Oregon papers of 1856–1900 and more than 25 spellings, wildcards, and split or OCR-misread forms (Hegnaner, Hegenaur, Hageneur, "Heg-/nauer" and others). They included the Bates, St. Clair, Vernon, Henry and Gasconade county papers held there, and retrospective items to 1960 that name Hegnauer with Gasconade or Krattly. The Butler Times-Press (1892–93) and the Bates County Republican (1893–1901) have gaps on the site, and no Papinville, Rockville or Prairie City paper survives there from before 1900. FamilySearch's Full-Text search of 27 Sep 2026, which reads deeds, wills, probate and court records by machine, found no death, burial or probate record for him under 23 spellings. The best lead is his pension file (NARA RG 15, invalid certificate 638,825), which should record when he was dropped from the rolls at death. Family trees give about 1891 without a source; one member tree gives Boeuf, Gasconade County, which conflicts with his residence in Bates County in 1884 and 1890.
  • Margreth: Apparently alive in 1884 (the county directory gives his wife's maiden name as "M. Barnett"). No widow's pension was filed, which may mean she died before him. The 1897 death date in trees is unsourced. As Margaretha (also Margareth and Margretha) she joined him in the Gasconade County deeds from May 1860 to Dec 1868, so she was alive at the end of 1868.22, 25
  • Johannes's birth year: Two index entries of Johannes's Igis baptism give 13/14 November 1840, but a third (FamilySearch record 6F8C-G3LN) gives 13/14 November 1839, which is before his parents' marriage in June 1840. The 1860 census age (19) and the 1856 manifest (15) support 1840. This is probably an indexing error; the register image has not yet been checked.
