Life story
Sylvester Krattly was born on 10 September 1876, the only son of Sylvester Krattly and Christina Hegnauer, Swiss-born farmers of Marion Township, Jasper County, Missouri.1–2 He grew up among eight sisters on the farm west of Carthage, and he stayed on it. In 1900, at twenty-three, he was a farm laborer at home, and in 1910 he was still single and working on the home farm.3–4 He stands in the back row of a photograph of the whole family taken in front of the farmhouse in those years.5
When his father made his will in 1913, he left the younger Sylvester an extra $400 "for the care and consideration which he has given to his mother and myself", together with a team of horses and all the farm machinery, wagons, buggies and harness, and named him an executor with his mother. After his father's death in May 1916 the two of them took out letters testamentary.6–8 In September 1918 he registered for the draft at Carthage, a tall man of medium build with grey eyes and dark hair, farming on his own account, and he named his mother as his nearest relative.1
In 1920 he was working the home farm for his widowed mother, and by 1930 the household was his: he owned the house, had a radio, and was farming with his mother, then eighty-four, his sisters Anna and Emma and his niece living with him.9–10 When his mother died in 1934 he was Sylvester Krattley of Carthage Route 4.11 He died in Jasper County in 1952.12–13

- Marital status in 1930 (open): He was single in 1910 and 1920, but the 1930 census appears to mark him "Wd" with an age at first marriage of 46, which would mean a marriage about 1922–23 that ended by 1930.10 No marriage or wife has been found, and his mother's obituary (1934) gives no wife.11 The entry may be an enumerator's error; his death certificate should show his marital status.
