Rosa B. Hegnauer was born in April 1893 in Missouri, the fourth child and third daughter of Christian Hegnauer and Anna Wirz, and grew up on their farm in Pleasant Gap Township, Bates County.1 In 1900 she was seven and at school; in 1910, aged seventeen, she was still at home with her parents, her brothers Leonard and Christian and her sisters Lizzie and Marie.1–2 Her elder sisters were Lena and Clara.

On 30 November 1911 Rosa married L. C. Steiner in Bates County.3 She was still in the county more than forty-five years later: when her father died in September 1957, she was Mrs. Rosa Steiner of Butler.4 Her later life and death have not yet been traced.
