Matthäus Hegnauer was born at Igis, Graubünden, Switzerland, on 3 May 1856 and baptised in the village church a week later. He was the first child of Nutt Hegnauer and Anna Barbara Bühler, who had married earlier that year, and the first grandchild of Peter Hegnauer and Anna Berri.1 No later record of him has been found.
