Life story
Christian Hegnauer lived at Igis, a farming village in the Rhine valley of Graubünden, Switzerland, in the second half of the eighteenth century.1 He was probably the Christen baptised there on 12 December 1748 to Nutt Hegnauer and Madlena Krädtli; Nutt was very probably a son of Jacob Hegnauer, the first of the name at Igis, who had married there in 1715.2–4 Christian was the father of Jakob Hegnauer, whose son Luzius took the family to America in 1856.5–7
Marriage and children
On 15 January 1777, in the church at Igis, Christian married Ursula Radig.8 Their first child, Agatha, was baptised on 13 November 1777, ten months after the wedding.9 Their first son, baptised in 1779, was named Nutt, like Christian's probable father; when Nutt died at Igis in 1854, the register again named his parents as Christian and Ursula.10–11 A second son, Christian, named for his father, was baptised on 5 January 1781, then Jakob on 5 September 1783 and a daughter, Elisabeth, on 3 May 1785.5, 12–13 Two more sons followed, in March 1789 and in May 1791, and each of them was named Christian too.14–15
None of the three Christians lived long. A Christian Hegnauer aged about three was buried in June 1784 and a baby Christian in September 1789, both very probably theirs, and the youngest was buried on 22 May 1791, the day after his baptism.16–18 Three times Christian and Ursula gave a son his father's name, and none of the three lived to the age of four. In eighteenth-century Graubünden smallpox, tuberculosis and, in bad years, famine raised the death rate from time to time, above all among children.19
The other children grew up and married at Igis. Nutt married Luzia Luzi in December 1806, Elisabeth married Johannes Riedberger in March 1807, and Jakob married Christina Pleisch in October 1808.20–22 Each of the three named a son Christian, Nutt in 1807, Jakob in 1810 and Elisabeth in 1812, and Elisabeth and Jakob each named their first daughter Ursula.23–26 What became of Agatha is not known.
Later years
The old Free State of the Three Leagues came to an end at the close of the century. From late 1798 to 1800 Graubünden was a battleground in the war between France and its enemies, occupied twice by Austrian and twice by French troops, and in 1803 the Mediation constitution made it a canton of the Swiss Confederation and restored its old division into leagues and jurisdictions.19 In that year a Christian Hegnauer, very probably he, was elected a Geschworener, a member of the Igis communal council.27
Ursula died in July 1808, three months before Jakob's wedding.22, 28 If, as is probable, Christian was the Christian Hegnauer buried at Igis on 15 April 1825, aged seventy-six, he outlived her by almost seventeen years.29
His sons Nutt and Jakob were buried at Igis in 1854 and 1858, and the register entries of both name him as their father; so does an Igis entry, probably her burial, for his daughter Elisabeth.11, 30–31 In the register of Igis citizen families, as abstracted by the Bürgergemeinde Landquart, two of the three Hegnauer founding couples are his sons with their wives, Jakob and Christina, and Nutt and Luzia.27 Jakob's son Luzius took his family to America in 1856, and Nutt's son Peter emigrated to America in 1872.7, 27

Research notes
- Sources: Every church record here is from FamilySearch's index of the Igis Reformed parish registers ("Switzerland, Catholic and Reformed Church Records"); none of the images has been viewed. The couple is reconstructed as family group F0066 in the study's Swiss family groups. The 1803 election and the founding couples are from the Bürgergemeinde Landquart's notes on the Igis citizen families, a secondary source; the historical background is from the Historisches Lexikon der Schweiz.
- The family reconstructed: The marriage of 1777 and seven baptisms, 1777–1791, name Christian (Christ, Christen) Hegnauer and Urs, Urschla or Ursula Radig (Redig, Rodig) as the parents.8, 9, 10, 12, 5, 13, 14, 15 Nutt's baptism of 1779 was found only in September 2026, by the variant-spelling harvest: the index reads him as "Ruttin Hegnaner", son of Christen Hegnaner and Urschla Radig. Three later register entries name the same couple, with the mother as Ursula Nadig: the burials of Nutt (1854) and Jakob (1858), and an entry, probably her burial, for Elisabeth Riedberger, née Hegnauer.11, 30, 31
- Nutt, a son, not a cousin: The study's summary of the Igis families had counted Nutt × Luzia Luzi (married 1806; family group F0074) among the cousins' lines. Nutt's burial names his parents as Christian Hegnauer and Ursula Nadig, so he was Jakob's brother.11, 20 Nutt's son Christian (1807) was named for his grandfather.23 Nutt's younger son, Peter (baptised 1812), took his own family to America in 1872 (see his profile).27
- Elisabeth Riedberger: The only daughter Elisabeth baptised to the couple is Lisabeth (1785). An Elisabeth Hegnauer married Johannes Riedberger at Igis on 31 Mar 1807, and their daughter Ursula (Dec 1807) and son Christian (1812) bear her parents' names.25 The register entry for "Elisabeth Riedberger Hegnauer", whose father's index lines name Christian Hegnauer and Ursula Nadig, confirms her as their daughter; its event and date are not in the study's extract and should be read.13, 21, 31
- The three Christians: Sons named Christian were baptised in 1781, 1789 and 1791. Burials of a Christian Hegnauer "born 1781" on 14 Jun 1784 and "born 1789" on 3 Sep 1789 fit the first two (their index entries name no parents), and the burial of 22 May 1791 names Christian and Ursula as the parents of the third.12, 16, 14, 17, 15, 18 A further burial entry for a child Christian, whose mother's index line names his parents as Christian and Ursula Hegnauer, has no date in the study's extract; it is probably a second index of one of these three burials, and reading it may confirm which.32 The gap between 1785 and 1789 may hide another child whose baptism is not indexed.
- "Gschwen": The father's name in the index of the 1789 baptism, "Gschwen", is a misreading, probably of "Christen" written in an abbreviated or unfamiliar hand; the mother, Ursula Radig, identifies the family.14
- Death (probable): A Christian Hegnauer, aged 76 (born 1749 by the index's computation), was buried at Igis on 15 Apr 1825 (two index entries, one as "Christ", both giving his age as 76 years). The index gives neither wife nor parents.29 He is taken to be this Christian because no other adult Christian Hegnauer appears in the Igis indexes of that generation: no other man of the name married, or had children baptised, at Igis between 1765 and 1800. The register image may give his wife, his parents or his standing (for example "Witwer", widower) and should be read.
- The 1803 election (probable): The Bürgergemeinde Landquart's notes on the Igis citizen families record that "Christian Hegnauer" was elected a Geschworener, a member of the communal council, in 1803.27 He is taken to be this Christian: the only other Christian Hegnauers in the Igis indexes of the time are his three sons, who died as small children, a son of Friedrich Hegnauer buried in May 1797, and boys born from 1807 onwards. The notes are a secondary abstract, and the council record itself has not been seen.
- Parents (probable, upgraded 27 Sep 2026): No record naming Christian's parents has been found; the link rests on elimination. The Christen baptised on 12 Dec 1748 to Nutt Hegnauer and Madlena Krädtli is taken to be Christian, by elimination.2 (1) The Hegnauers of Igis all descend from Jacob, who married there in 1715; no Hegnauer appears in the Igis registers before him, and no other Hegnauer family lived in Graubünden in the 1700s (the variant-spelling harvest of 27 Sep 2026 found none). (2) In the late 1740s the only Igis Hegnauer father with children being baptised was Jacob's son Nutt (children baptised 1746–1762); his brother Johann Heinrich (H1057) married only in 1763, and Jacob, married to Leta Gujan since 1724, had no child baptised after the 1730s (a Jacob Hegnauer buried in August 1744 is either he or his son Jacob, b. 1727; the index gives no age). (3) Nutt had a Christen baptised on 12 Dec 1748, the only Christian baptism of a Hegnauer at Igis between 1740 and 1760 in the indexes harvested (all spellings). A collection-wide search of 27 Sep 2026 (given name Christ*, surname H*gn*, births 1740–1760) found it to be the only Christian or Christen Hegnauer baptism anywhere in FamilySearch's Swiss church-record index for those years, not only at Igis; the other Christian Hegnauers it returned are Igis burials of 1791, 1797 and 1825. His age matches the 1825 burial exactly: both index entries of that burial give his age as 76 years,29 which puts his birth between 16 Apr 1748 and 15 Apr 1749, and the baptism of 12 Dec 1748 falls inside that window. (4) At Nutt's baptism in 1779 the father is written "Christen", the same form as at the 1748 baptism.10 (5) Christian named his eldest son Nutt, following the custom of naming a first son for his paternal grandfather, and his daughter Elisabeth after Nutt's daughter Elisabeth (1754).10, 13 No burial of the 1748 Christen as a child is indexed. The remaining doubt is that the Igis burial index is thin before 1780, so the 1748 boy could in principle have died unrecorded and Christian have come from elsewhere; nothing suggests that. The 1777 marriage entry and the 1825 burial, read on the images (FamilySearch Center only), may name his parents and would make the link proven.
- Wife's surname: See her profile. The records made in her married life give Radig (and Redig, Rodig); her own burial (1808) and the burial entries of her children, written 1854–1858, give Nadig. The index is known to misread a written N as R, so her maiden name was probably Nadig.
