Clara Hegnauer was born in January 1889 in Missouri, the second child of Christian Hegnauer and Anna Wirz, and grew up on their farm in Pleasant Gap Township, Bates County.1 Her grandfather Leonhard Hegnauer had brought the family to the township from Illinois in 1869. In 1900 Clara, eleven, was at school, with her elder sister Lena and her younger brothers and sisters Leonard, Rosa, Lizzie, Christian and Marie.1

Clara married a Mr. Sweezy; when and where has not been found. In September 1957, when her father died, she was Mrs. Clara Sweezy of Adrian, in the north of Bates County.2 Her later life and death have not yet been traced.
