Life story
Martin Hegnauer Jr. was born on 28 January 1884 in St. Louis, Missouri, the only son and youngest child of Martin Hegnauer, a Swiss-born laborer, and Mary Gambler.1–2 The next year the family moved to Pleasant Gap Township in Bates County, where his father's brother Leonhard farmed, and in August 1885 his mother died, when Martin was a year and a half old.2 His grandmother Katharina Gambler of St. Joseph remembered him and his sisters Lizzie, Maggie and Bertha in her will of 1895.3 In January 1900 he was a pupil at the Scifres school, and that June, aged sixteen, he was at home on the rented farm with his widowed father and his sister Bertha.4–5
Martin never married. In 1910 he and his sister Maggie were listed in the household of Monroe Smiley in Rockville Township.6 By 1920 he was back with his father, who had bought a farm two miles outside Rockville, working as a laborer; Maggie too was living there.7 In June 1924, after a long spell of poor health, he was taken to the hospital at Rich Hill for an operation for appendicitis.8 Maggie died in 1926 and his father in March 1927.2
Martin stayed at Rockville for the rest of his life. He registered for the draft in both world wars, in 1918 and, at 58, in 1942, and was at Rockville for the censuses of 1930 and 1950.9–12 He spent the last three weeks of his life in the Butler Memorial Hospital, where he died on 9 June 1950, aged 66. He was buried two days later in the Rockville Cemetery, where his father and Maggie lie.1, 13

His death certificate (image read) gives 28 Jan 1884 at St. Louis, and his WWI draft registration (as indexed) and Find a Grave give the same date; the 1900 census gives Jan 1884, Missouri. His father's obituary says all four children were born in St. Louis, where the family lived until 1885. The certificate's informant was not a relative. No birth record has been found.

1920 Residence
On his father's farm, two miles outside Rockville: "Martin Jr.", son, 35, single, laborer (1920). In June 1924, "Mr. Hegnauer, son of Martin Hegnauer, who lives with his father", had been in poor health and was taken to the hospital at Rich Hill for an operation for appendicitis.
The 1920 census lists him with his father and sister Maggie; the 1924 newspaper item says he lived with his father; his father's 1927 obituary names "one son, Martin Jr., of Rockville".
