Lena Hegnauer was born in May 1887 in Missouri, the eldest child of Christian Hegnauer and Anna Wirz, who had married the previous November.1 She grew up on her parents' farm in Pleasant Gap Township, Bates County, a granddaughter of the Swiss settler Leonhard Hegnauer. In 1900, aged thirteen, she was at school, the eldest of seven: Clara, Leonard, Rosa, Lizzie, Christian and Marie came after her.1

On 20 December 1906, at Butler, Lena married Fred H. Stevener.2–3 They evidently settled near Prairie City: in January 1923 the Prairie City column of the Rich Hill paper reported that her parents and other relatives and friends had spent a Sunday at "the Fred Stevener home".4 Lena and Fred had at least one daughter.3

When her father died in September 1957, Lena was living at Rockville.5 When and where she died has not yet been found.
