Alma L. Hegnauer was born at Portsmouth, on the Ohio River in Scioto County, Ohio, on 21 September 1887, a daughter of Christian (Chris) Hegnauer, an emigrant from Igis, Switzerland, and Nellie (Cornelia) Conzett.1 In 1910 she was living with her parents and her brother Wilbur at Mansfield, Richland County.2

On 10 November 1917, aged thirty, Alma married Rufus K. Esselburn in Richland County; the record names her parents as Christian Hegnauer and Cornelia Conzett.3 They had at least two sons, Lewis Wilbur Esselburn and John Frederick Esselburn; John died in 2004.4 Rufus's Ohio death record, from the years 1908–1953, names his wife as Alma Hegnauer.5 When and where Alma died has not yet been found.
