Life story
Jakob Hegnauer was baptised at Igis, in the Rhine valley of Graubünden, Switzerland, on 7 June 1824, the youngest of the seven children of Jakob Hegnauer and Christina Pleisch.1 While his brother Luzius took his family to America in 1856, Jakob made his life at Igis: he married there twice, and his daughters were baptised in the Igis church.2–7
Marriages and children
Jakob's father died at Igis in July 1858. Less than a year later, on 29 May 1859, Jakob, then thirty-four, married Katharina Spiess in the Igis church.4, 8 She was the daughter of Konrad Spiess and Sara Badraun, and the marriage was entered as well in the register of Rehetobel, in Appenzell Ausserrhoden, where the marriages of three of her sisters were also recorded.9–10
Their daughter Christine was born on 27 December 1863 and baptised on 9 January 1864. She bore the name of Jakob's mother, Christina, who had died at Igis in September 1862.6, 11 Katharina died on 22 December 1869, at about thirty-eight, and was buried on Christmas Eve.12
Six years later Jakob, now fifty-one, married again. His second wife, Margreth Disch, had been baptised at Schiers on 6 October 1833, the daughter of Kaspar Disch and Eva Müller.5, 13 The marriage was entered in both parishes, at Schiers under 31 October and at Igis under 7 November 1875.5, 14 On 13 January 1877 Margreth gave birth to a daughter, Katharina, who was baptised at Igis on 28 January.7
Later years
Katharina's baptism is the last record of Jakob that has been found; he was then fifty-two.7 His elder daughter, Christine, died at Igis on 13 May 1885, aged twenty-one.15 When and where Jakob died is not known. No son of his is recorded, and the Hegnauers have since died out as citizens of Igis; his parents' line was carried on in America, through Luzius.3, 16

- Parents: His baptism (two index entries) names Jacob Hegnauer and Christina Pleisch. Every entry of both his marriages names the same parents (his mother indexed as Pleisch, Fleisch or "Fluss"), and the 1859 Igis entry gives his birth year as 1824.1, 4, 5
- The 1875 marriage is his: The Schiers index gives the groom a birth year of 1833 and the bride 1824. The two years are evidently swapped: Margreth Disch, daughter of Kaspar Disch and Eva Müller, was baptised at Schiers on 6 Oct 1833 (probable identification: the only Margreth of those parents in the index), and Jakob was born in 1824.14, 13 All three entries name the groom's parents as Jakob Hegnauer and Christina Pleisch. The Igis burial index runs to February 1887 and has no burial of him, and no death or burial of his was found elsewhere in the Swiss index under any spelling of Hegnauer. No later record of Margreth Disch or of Katharina (born 1877) was found either. Leads: the Swiss civil registers (kept from 1876), the Igis burial register after 1887, the Schiers registers, and the Igis Bürgerregister. An Ancestry member tree gives his death as 24 Jul 1887, with no place, citing only "Igis church records". That is after the end of the FamilySearch burial index, so the Igis burial register for 1887 is the first place to look; until a record is seen, the date is a lead, not a fact.17
