Christian Hegnauer was baptised at Igis, in the Rhine valley of Graubünden, Switzerland, in August 1810, the eldest son of Jakob Hegnauer and Christina Pleisch, who had married there in 1808.1–3 He was named after his father's father, Christian Hegnauer.4 His only elder sister, Ursula, had died as a baby the year before he was born.5–6

Christian grew up the eldest of a large family. His brother Leonhard was baptised in 1812, his sisters Maria and Elsbeth in 1815, his brother Luzius in 1819 and the youngest, Jakob, in 1824.7–11 Luzius was to take his own family to America in 1856.12

What became of Christian himself is not known. His baptism is the only record of him that has been found.

Both index entries name the parents as Jacob (Jakob) Hegnauer and Christina Pleisch (indexed "Flüch" in the second), the couple who had married at Igis in 1808. The day differs (2 or 12 August); the register image would decide. 2 August is the date in the index batch used for all his brothers and sisters.

  • Baptism date (conflict): The two index entries of his baptism agree on the parents and the month but not the day: 2 Aug 1810 (parents Jacob Hegnauer and Christina Pleisch) and 12 Aug 1810 ("Christian Heggauer", parents Jakob Heggauer and Christina "Flüch"). Only the register image can decide. The profile gives 2 August, the date in the index batch used for all his brothers and sisters, and dates his birth "before 12 Aug 1810", which is true on either reading.1, 2
  • Later life: not found. A search of the FamilySearch index on 27 Sep 2026 found no burial of a boy Christian Hegnauer at Igis between 1810 and 1835, although the Igis burial index for those years includes children's burials and usually names the father.
