Key finds

  1. Christina Pleisch's probable baptism. "Tschina" Pleisch was baptised on 3 Dec 1791 in the Luzein register. The index gives her parents as "Bernhard" Pleisch and Maria Nett: 6FZB-ZQCF; father's entry 6FZB-ZQCN, mother's 6FZB-ZQCV; DGS 8126170_003.
    • Her 1862 burial ("aged 70") and her citizenship (Luzein) both fit, and Luzein's own register also recorded that burial: 6FZ1-Y5LQ, DGS 8126170_004.
    • The father's name conflicts. Section 1 sets out the two readings.
  2. Madlena Krädtli (H1023): probable burial and possible baptism.
    • Burial: "Magdalena Krättlen" was buried at Igis on 28 Oct 1774, aged 52: 66V7-PYRY.
    • Baptism: "Magdalena", a twin, was baptised at Igis on 16 Jan 1722 to "Jacob Bartli" and "Margreth Dacher": 66VM-2D66. I read the parents as Jacob Krädtli and Margret Däscher, who married at Igis on 20 Jan 1719 (66VW-LCXH).
  3. Ursula Radig (H0158): the surname is probably Nadig. At Tschiertschen the same index renders one couple as both "Christ Nadig" and "Christ Radig". The Igis "Radig/Redig/Rodig" entries are probably misreadings of Nadig. Her baptism was not found.
  4. Christian (H0157). Nothing names his parents. His 1825 burial gives his age as 76, which brackets the 12 Dec 1748 baptism of Christen exactly. That baptism is the only Christian or Christen Hegnauer baptism anywhere in the Swiss index for 1740–1760.
  5. Negative results. No death, burial or 1900 census entry was found for Luzius or Anna Margreth. No FamilySearch index entry exists for Susanna Katharina Hirschi's 1846 baptism. No burial was found for Nutt, Leta or Leonhard Pleisch.

1. Christina Pleisch (H0156)

Found: the probable baptism

6FZB-ZQCF is the baptism of Tschina Pleisch, 3 Dec 1791, event place "Schweiz" (DGS 8126170_003, the Luzein register). Her parents are indexed as Maria Nett (6FZB-ZQCV) and "Bernhard Pleisch" (6FZB-ZQCN). No birth date is indexed.

Why it fits:

  • Name. Tschina is the Prättigau (Romansh) short form of Christina.
  • Date. Her Igis burial gives "70 years" on 17 Sep 1862. A baptism of 3 Dec 1791 gives 70 years and 9 months.
  • Place. It is the parish of her citizenship. Luzein's own register copied her 1862 death: 6FZ1-Y5LQ, "Christina Hegnauer", burial 20 Sep 1862, aged 70, parents Leonhard Pleisch and Maria Nett (father's entry 6FZ1-Y5LW), DGS 8126170_004. That copy is why the Bürgerregister calls her "von Luzein".
  • Mother. Maria Nett, as in both 1862 burial entries.
  • No other candidate. It is the only Christina or Tschina Pleisch baptism with a Nett mother in the Luzein index for 1765–1800 (27 Pleisch baptisms in total). The only other Christina of the period is the one baptised 19 Sep 1784 to Hans and Greta Pleisch (6FZB-PJH2), already rejected. No burial of the 1791 Tschina as a child was found: all Pleisch burials 1791–1812 in DGS 8126170 were checked.
  • The conflict. The father's name reads "Bernhard", but both 1862 entries say Leonhard. No other "Bernhard Pleisch" occurs anywhere in the collection, and this is the only "Bernhard" father in the Luzein index for 1770–1800. The Luzein index writes the name Lienhard as "Liehard", "Liechart" or "Linhart" elsewhere (the Luk family, 1775–1786). "Bernhard" is therefore probably a misreading of Lienhard, but only the image can settle it.

Judgement: probably her baptism, with high confidence on the identity. The father's name needs the image, at a FamilySearch Center (DGS 8126170).

The father: two readings

(A) Leonhard (Lienhard) Pleisch, baptised 16 Mar 1763. This is the preferred reading.

  • 6FZB-KBR2: "Leonhardt Plaisch", born 14 Mar 1763, baptised 16 Mar 1763, parents Heinrich Plaisch and Lena Töntzin (Dönz).
  • He is the only Leonhard Pleisch of the right generation in the Luzein index.
  • His parents had lost three earlier sons named Lienhard:
    • baptised 1 Jan 1746, 6FZB-JXSX; buried 5 Jan 1746, 6F8M-49G4;
    • baptised 14 Jul 1748, 6FZB-5H59; a Liehardt was buried 7 Mar 1750, 6F8M-W2G9;
    • baptised 5 Dec 1752, 6FZB-XN68; a Lienhard was buried 3 Mar 1754, 6FZ1-PK4G.
  • The couple's other children: Hans 1742 (6FZB-5KXR), Menga 1754 (6FZB-ZQVD; buried 1757), Christina and Jann, twins, 10 Mar 1759 (6FZB-VXJZ, 6FZB-J65Y), Jöri 1761 (6FZB-5KNG), Christen 1765 (6FZB-VYRL).
  • The name ran in this branch: a Leonard born 1686, son of Heinrich (6FZB-G3J1), and a Lienhart who was a father in 1725 (6FZB-65CT).
  • The reading fits both 1862 entries. It also fits the naming of Christina's children: her second son was Leonhard (1812) and her second daughter Maria (1815), after the maternal grandparents. Her first son and daughter, Christian and Ursula, carry her husband's parents' names.
  • His wife would then be a different Maria Nett from Heinrich's wife in (B). A possible candidate is Maria Nett, baptised 5 Sep 1770 (6FZB-TBF2), daughter of Luzi Nett and Tschina Flütschin. Tschina would then be named after her maternal grandmother. This Maria married Mattli Kaspar on 18 Apr 1799 (6FZR-ZWHW), which is consistent with widowhood although the index does not say so. She was buried 23 Jul 1802, aged 32 (6F8M-3X3W).
  • Nothing yet proves this Maria is the right one. No marriage of a Lienhard Pleisch is indexed: the Luzein marriage index stops at 1 Dec 1790 and has no entries for 1791–1792. No burial of a Lienhard or Leonhard Pleisch after 1754 was found.

(B) Heinrich Pleisch and Maria Nett (1748–1839).

  • Maria Nett, baptised 22 Jul 1748, was the daughter of Flury Nett and Nesa Täscher (6FZB-PNLW). She was buried 20 Sep 1839, died 18 Sep, aged 91, spouse Heinrich Pleisch, same parents (6F8M-M63V).
  • Their children in the Luzein index:
    • Flori, baptised 1 Jan 1768 (6FZB-2CNP, "Heinrich Pläsch × Märja Nett");
    • Nesa, buried 7 Mar 1777, born about 1775 (6F8M-QFND);
    • Margret, baptised 3 Dec 1776 (6FZB-VYNR);
    • Nesa, baptised 25 Dec 1780 (6FZB-JXDL);
    • Christian, born about 1783, buried 11 Oct 1851, wife Anna Flütsch (6F8M-9BZB);
    • Catrina, born 1 Jan 1785 (6FZB-PH4N), buried 15 Dec 1871 as Kathrina Doenz-Pleisch (6FZ1-193S);
    • Anna, born 7 Dec 1786 (6FZB-J6TC), and an unnamed son born 15 Dec 1786 (6FZB-VXVN);
    • Anna, born 16 Jan 1788 (6FZB-Z3BC); an Anna born about 1787 was buried 22 Apr 1862 (6FZ1-B2M5);
    • Maria, born about 1790, buried 17 Nov 1854 as the wife of Bartholome Gut (6F8M-DML7).
  • Tschina, Dec 1791, would fit this sequence as the last child. Against it: the children's own burials (1851–1871) all name Heinrich, while Christina's name Leonhard, and no Heinrich appears among Christina's children.
  • A Heinrich Pleisch born about 1740 was buried 21 Jan 1804 (6F8M-DM8T). Luzein had at least four Heinrich Pleisches at once (wives Lena Dönz, Elsbeth Christ, Elsa Kaspar and Maria Nett), so this burial cannot be assigned.

My judgement: (A) is more likely. Christina is very probably the Tschina of 1791, and her father very probably a Lienhard or Leonhard Pleisch. The Leonhard baptised in 1763, son of Heinrich Pleisch and Lena Dönz, is the only candidate in the index (possible). Which Maria Nett was the mother is open. The parents' marriage and Leonhard's burial were not found. No other child of a Leonhard or "Bernhard" Pleisch with Maria Nett is indexed for 1788–1800.

Not done

One search, for Hegnauer entries within Luzein folders 003 and 004 (for example a Luzein copy of the 1808 marriage), was blocked by the session's permission system and was not run. A human can run it in two minutes: q.surname=Hegnauer&q.filmNumber=008126170_003_M99W-JJ8.

2. Ursula Radig / Nadig (H0158)

Found

Nothing that is her baptism.

Observation on the surname (useful)

In the Tschiertschen register (DGS 8126160_001) one couple appears under both spellings:

  • "Christ Nadig and Agta Philipp", with children Peter 1752 (6FZB-CNKD, as "Chriss Nadig and Agta Schil") and Anna 1754 (6FZB-8G4J);
  • the same couple as "Christ Radig and Agta Schlipp" for Christian, baptised 22 Jan 1758 (6FZB-4FDC).

Peter's 1837 burial (6FZ1-YGH4) names his parents as Christian Nadig and Agatha Philipp, which confirms the pair. The index therefore turns a written N into R.

At Igis the split follows the indexing batches, not time:

  • the 66VM and 66VW batches (1777–1791) read Radig, Redig and Rodig;
  • the 66V7 and 6F8D batches (1808–1858) read Nadig.

No Radig family appears anywhere else in the Igis/Zizers index; the only Radig entries there are Ursula's own. Nadig is a well-attested Graubünden name (Tschiertschen, Malix). I suggest Nadig as the likelier maiden name, pending the images.

Candidates (none fits)

  • Ursula Redig, buried 2 Jul 1759, father Jeremias Redig (6F8D-67B7), in the Rheinwald films (DGS 8341619). A child, probably, and a different family.
  • Ursula Nadig × Andreas Mullis; Urschla Nadig × Jöri Jüni (66V3-TTDN); Ursula Nadig × Johan Marthi. These are wives in other parishes, none in the Igis area, and no dates fit.
  • The Tschiertschen Nadig baptisms 1739–1758 include no Ursula. The girls are Margreth 1739, Maria 1741 (two entries), Elssbeth 1746, Barbla 1752, and Anna 1754 and 1755.

Still worth trying: the Chur, Schanfigg and Churwalden registers, and the Catholic registers of Trimmis and Untervaz. The 1777 marriage and 1808 burial images may say "von …".

3. Nutt Hegnauer (H1022) × Madlena Krädtli (H1023)

Marriage (about 1745): not found, and probably in an index gap

  • Igis marriages in DGS 8014188 are indexed for 1742, 1743 (six) and 1744 (four).
  • For 1745 none is indexed, and for 1746 only one (Christen Thugscher × Manga Wulserin, 26 Jan 1746, 66VW-VS22).
  • Zizers marriages 1743–1748 are indexed, and none has a Hegnauer groom.
  • So the marriage probably sits in a gap in the index, or in the register itself. The images of 1745 (DGS 8014188_002) should be read.
  • Weak lead, probably not her. Andreas Ostermeyer × "Magdalena Rädislenl", Igis, Sep 1744 (66VW-PYVL; bride 66VW-PYVG).
    • The bride's surname looks like the "Krädlenen" form of 1760.
    • But the groom belongs to the Zizers Ostermeyer family, and no Ostermeyer children follow.
    • Check the image.

Madlena's baptism: candidate, possible to probable

  • 66VM-2D66: "Magdalena", baptised 16 Jan 1722, Igis. Father "Jacob Bartli" (66VM-2D6X), mother "Margreth Dacher" (66VM-2D6F).
  • Twin: Elssbeth, same day and parents (66VM-2DNJ).
  • The same couple, I think, appears as:
    • Jacob Krädtli × Margret Däschner, married Igis 20 Jan 1719 (66VW-LCXH);
    • Margaretha "Kratlis", baptised 19 Nov 1719, parents Jacob Kratlis × Margretha "Tapferin" (66VM-66NY);
    • Anna Maria, baptised 23 Sep 1725, parents Jacob "Krät" × Margreth "Scherin" (66VM-J5FY).
  • In each entry the mother's surname is a misreading of Däscher (Täscher): "Dacher", "Tapferin", "Scherin".
  • No "Bartli" family appears in the Igis index. There is one Bartli at Zizers, a child buried in 1741 (66V7-PJ81).
  • Jacob Krädtli's children therefore run 1719, 1722 (twins), 1725. The burial below gives exactly 1722.
  • It is the only Igis baptism of a Magdalena, 1712–1730, that could be a Krädtli. The others are Dacher 1712, Dolf 1715, Castelberg 1716, Tomma 1717, Vill 1724 and Thommen 1727.

Judgement: possible to probable. The father's surname "Bartli" must be checked on the image.

Madlena's burial: probable

  • 66V7-PYRY: Magdalena Krättlen, buried 28 Oct 1774, Igis, aged 52 (born about 1722). The index names no spouse.
  • Fit:
    • A woman born in 1722 was 24 to 40 when her children were born, 1746–1762.
    • She is still alive after 1762.
    • Igis entries of married women use the maiden name, as with "Ursula Hegnauer Nadig" in 1808.
    • No other Magdalena Krättli of that age is indexed.
  • Judgement: probable. The image may name her husband.
  • Related entries, for context:
    • Anna Krättlen, buried 28 Apr 1770 (66V7-GR7W);
    • "Pfinus Krätt", buried 5 Feb 1743 aged 43 (66V7-845X); unidentified, it could be the father if the given name is misread;
    • Anna Maria Krätli married Ulrich Obrecht, 3 Feb 1746, place "Schweiz" (6F8D-2C13). Possibly the 1725 sister; not checked.

Nutt's burial: not found

  • q.givenName=Nut*&q.deathLikeDate 1762–1812 (DGS 8014188): 14 results, none a burial.
  • q.givenName=Rut* (same filters): 7 results, none a burial.
  • q.surname=H*g*&q.deathLikeDate 1762–1800 (DGS 8014188): 162 results. Its 16 Hegnauer burials include no Nutt.
  • The study's own harvest of Igis burials 1740–1830 (data/raw) also has none.

Side finds:

  • A Krättli boy named Nutt, baptised 14 Feb 1752, parents Christian Krätli × Maria "Bräthi Nut" (66VM-KV5R); the Nutt given name also occurs among the Krättli.
  • "Rutt" [Nutt] Hegnauer, baptised 5 Feb 1789, parents Johann Heinrich Hegnauer × Maria Hartmann (66VM-DCP9); check whether it is in the study.

4. Christian Hegnauer (H0157): anything naming his parents

  • The 1777 marriage (66VW-LLKD, DGS 8014188_002). The index has the groom and the bride "Ursula Redig" only; no parents.
  • The 1825 burial. 6F88-R2KR (DGS 8195990_002) and 6F88-RLDW ("Christ", DGS 8195990_004) both give Age 76 years, and no spouse or parents.
    • Age 76 on 15 Apr 1825 means he was born between 16 Apr 1748 and 15 Apr 1749.
    • The Christen baptised 12 Dec 1748 (66VM-KM4W) falls inside that window.
  • Collection-wide check. q.givenName=Christ*&q.surname=H*gn*&q.birthLikeDate 1740–1760 (coll.) finds only one Christian or Christen Hegnauer baptism anywhere in Switzerland, 1740–1760: 66VM-KM4W, Igis, parents "Nut Hegnaùer × Madlena Krätlner".
    • The other Christian entries are Igis burials of 1791 and 1797 and the 1825 burial.
    • The 1797 burial is of a child whose father was a Friedrich Hegnauer (66V7-PJMZ); check whether the study has him.
  • No early death. No burial of a Christen Hegnauer child 1748–1776 is indexed (study harvest and the searches above).
  • Result: still no record names his parents. The age evidence strengthens the probable link to Nutt × Madlena. The images of the 1777 marriage and the 1825 burial remain the best hope.

5. Jacob Hegnauer (H1434) and Leta Gujan (H1436)

Leta's baptism: not found

  • q.surname=Gujan&q.birthLikeDate 1680–1708 (coll.): 192 results.
    • Gujan baptisms of 1688–1704, place "Schweiz": Anna 1688, Martin 1689, Ulrich 1691, Künga 1691, Dorothea 1700, Elssbeth 1704. Jacob "Gujar" 1702 is probably of the same family.
    • No Leta or Leda.
  • q.givenName=Le*&q.surname=Guj* (coll.): 44 results. The only Leda is Leda (Ledonia) Gujan × Hans Jörg Schmid:
    • children include Nutt Schmid, baptised 19 Sep 1789 (6FZB-DND4), and Elisabeth, 19 Jan 1791 (6FZB-FLT8);
    • DGS 8126174_004, which is Scharans, Malans or Scheid.
    • This is a later woman, but a Gujan family using both Leda and Nutt two generations on. If the folder is Malans, just across the Rhine from Igis, that is a lead for Leta's home.
    • The Malans register begins only in 1721, too late for her own baptism.

Leta's burial: not found

  • The Igis/Zizers index holds only 28 entries with a given name like Leta, Leda or Lena, 1734–1790, and none is a burial (q.givenName=Le*a&q.deathLikeDate 1734–1790, DGS 8014188).
  • She may be buried under a misread or omitted given name.

Jacob's burial of August 1744 (66V7-V7GH)

  • The record page shows no age and no kin; the index cannot decide between father and son.
  • Two weak points lean to the father, Jacob:
    • child burials in this book usually name the father (Flori 1718: "father Jacob"), and this entry names no one;
    • neither the study's harvest nor these searches found any adult trace of the son Jacob (born 1727): no marriage or child at Igis, 1745–1775.

Jacob before 1715

No new candidate. q.givenName=Jacob&q.surname=Hegnauer&q.birthLikeDate 1675–1697 (coll., 77 results) returns the Elgg entries already known:

  • Hans Jacob, baptised 2 May 1686, Elgg, parents Johann Hegnauter × Anna Gestner [Gessner] (66VS-13LQ). Still the best "possible".
    • An earlier Hans Jacob of the same couple was baptised 26 Sep 1682 (66V3-M1Z9); he probably died young.
    • Counter-evidence: Hans Jacob Hegnauer, son of Johannes, buried Elgg 24 Mar 1720 (66VQ-RK4L), no age. If this is the 1686 man, he is excluded; it may instead be the 1719 infant of Johannes × Esther Koller.
  • Excluded:
    • Hans Jacob Hegnäuer × Margretha Stadelman, married Elgg 11 Jan 1698 (66V7-P3Z1), because he stayed at Elgg;
    • the Elgg Jacob burials of 1713, 1728, 1738, 1740 and later, all at Elgg;
    • the Catholic Jacobs: Pfeffikon LU 1675 and 1677, parents Jacob Hegnauwer × Maria Blatner; Grenchen SO 1689, father Joan Petrus Hagenawer.
  • The study's variant harvest (data/raw) adds nothing for 1672–1697.
  • The Stein am Rhein and Wagenhausen "Hagenauwer" leads were not re-searched: already in H1434.

6. Anna Margreth Bernet (H0036) and Luzius (H0001) in the USA: negative

No death, burial, probate, obituary or 1900 census entry was found for either. The index holds only what the study already has:

  • the 1860 census, MHZ1-DLR and MHZ1-DLT;
  • the 1880 census, M66D-DZC and M66D-DZZ;
  • the Civil War service cards, FFB9-9V… and FF1W-7NY;
  • the 1856 arrival, Germans to America index "Lucie Hegemann" KD31-6J6.

One side note: FamilySearch's Find a Grave index places Mary Hegnauer (1851–1885) at "Bates City, Lafayette, Missouri" (QV2F-9YPZ). That is a geocoding error for the Prairie City Cemetery in Bates County.

  • q.givenName=Lucius&q.birthLikeDate 1816–1822&q.birthLikePlace=Switzerland&q.recordCountry=United States: 5,699 results, page 1. Only Luzius's own 1860 and 1880 entries.
    • "Lucius Grapp", born 1816 at Davos, died Highland IL 1 Apr 1899 (HGBK-J83Z), is another man.
  • The pension file (NARA, certificate 638,825) remains the key source.

7. Susanna Katharina Hirschi (H0038): baptism not indexed

  • q.givenName=Susanna&q.surname=Hirschi&q.birthLikeDate 1844–1848&q.recordCountry=Switzerland: 46 results. None fits. The nearest is Susanna, baptised 9 Apr 1848 at Reutigen, parents Abraham Hirschi × Susanna Dürig (66JF-BMZ3), a different child.
  • q.surname=Hirschi&q.anyPlace=Amsoldingen, Bern&q.birthLikeDate 1830–1850: no entry placed at Amsoldingen. Amsoldingen baptisms of this period appear not to be indexed.
  • q.fatherGivenName=Christian&q.fatherSurname=Hirschi&q.birthLikeDate 1833–1850&q.recordCountry=Switzerland: 144 results. None has a Stocker mother.
    • The Magdalena of 1836 there (Oberwichtrach, mother Christina Kneubühl, 68VR-DJXK) is not her sister.
  • As the master already says, the source is the Amsoldingen Taufrodel for 1846 (Staatsarchiv Bern, K Amsoldingen, free online) or the Billeter register (FHL 599705).

  2. H0156: if the image confirms "Lienhard", Christina's father is very probably Leonhard Pleisch, baptised 1763, son of Heinrich Pleisch × Lena Dönz, which adds a further generation. The mother (which Maria Nett) needs the image of the 1791 entry, and perhaps the Luzein Familienregister.
  3. H0158: consider Nadig as the preferred surname.
  4. H1023: add the probable burial of 1774 and the possible baptism of 1722, with parents Jacob Krädtli × Margret Däscher (married 1719).
