The brothers and sisters of Luzius Hegnauer

Results in brief

No new people were needed: Jakob's two wives and two daughters were already in the study (H1033–H1036).

New index entries

• 66VM-NMNT Christian "Heggauer", baptism 12 Aug 1810, Igis; parents Jakob Heggauer (66VM-NMNY) and Christina "Flüch" (66VM-NMN1). A second index of Christian's baptism, from the 66VM batch. The study's entry 6F8C-N58P gives 2 Aug 1810. The day conflicts (2 or 12); only the image can decide. "Heggauer" was not among the spellings of the variant harvest.
• 6F8C-TB2G Maria "Hegmnauer", baptism 23 Jan 1815, Igis; parents Jakob Hegmnauer (6F8C-TB2R) and Christina "Fleischi" (6F8C-TB2B). A second index of Maria's baptism (the study had 6F8C-N6FM).
• 6F8M-636P Jakob "Hagnener", groom, marriage 15 May 1859, Rehetobel, Appenzell Ausserrhoden; bride Kathrina Spiess (6F8M-63XC), daughter of Konrad [Spiess] and Sara Badraun; groom's parents "Jakob" (6F8M-636T) and "Christina Fluss" (6F8M-63XM). This is the bride's home-parish entry of Jakob's first marriage, entered at Igis on 29 May 1859. Konrad Spiess and Sara Badraun's other daughters' marriages were also entered at Rehetobel (Christina × Jakob Jost 1848, Martha × Jakob Tobler 1853, Margaretha × Johannes Klee 1860) or Teufen AR (Anna Maria 1857).
• 66VD-4N6J "Elisabeth Gegeauer", mother at the burial of Elsbeth Gadient, Wartau SG, 26 Jan 1840 (died 22 Jan 1840, aged 1 year; 66VD-4N6F). No father is named. The child is probably Elsbeth Gadient, born 25 Jul 1838 and baptised at Igis 30 Jul 1838, daughter of Christian Gadient and Elsbeth Hegnauer (O01578, O01677, O01694).
• Margreth Disch (H1035), Jakob's second wife:
  • baptised Schiers, 6 Oct 1833 (born the same day), daughter of Kasper Disch and Eva Müller: 66V3-PZZR (probable: the only Margreth of these parents in the index; her 1875 marriage names the same parents);
  • bride at Schiers, 31 Oct 1875 (66VW-FJ8T) and at Igis, 7 Nov 1875 (6F84-HFPY, 6F84-6W3H), parents Kaspar Disch and Eva Müller;
  • mother at Katharina's baptism, Igis, 28 Jan 1877 (6F8C-BMWJ).

Findings

1. The "birth 1833" of the Schiers marriage is the bride's. The Schiers index gives the groom "Jakob Hegenauer" (66VW-FJ82) a birth year of 1833 and the bride (66VW-FJ8T) 1824. Margreth Disch was baptised at Schiers on 6 Oct 1833, and Jakob at Igis in 1824 (his 1859 marriage also gives 1824). The two years are evidently swapped in the index. So the 1875 groom is Jakob (1824) himself, remarrying six years after his first wife's death (Katharina Spiess, buried 24 Dec 1869). Every entry of the 1875 marriage names the groom's parents as Jakob Hegnauer and Christina Pleisch (Fleisch). Jakob had married only in 1859, so no son of his could have married in 1875, and the Igis index has no other son Jakob of this couple. The two Igis entries (O01353, O01402) are raised from probable to confirmed.
2. The marriage dates differ between parishes. Igis dates the first marriage 29 May 1859 (three entries) and Rehetobel 15 May 1859; Igis dates the second marriage 7 Nov 1875 (two entries) and Schiers 31 Oct 1875. In both cases the bride's parish has the earlier date. One date may be the banns and the other the wedding, or one entry is a copy. The masters give the Igis dates and note the others; the images would decide.
3. Ursula and Maria died as babies. Ursula was buried three days after her baptism, and Maria thirteen days after hers. Both burial indexes give the age as "0 days". Ursula's burial names no parents; Maria's names the father, Jacob Hegnauer. Each is the only Igis baptism of that name in 1795–1830, so both burials are probable.

4. Christian (1810) and Leonhard (1812) left no later trace in the index.

   • Child burials at Igis, 1809–1835, are indexed and usually name the father. Neither boy is among them (search 7 below).
   • Neither married at Igis. All 138 Igis records of a Leonhard were read (search 5); none is a Leonhard Hegnauer after 1812.
   • Neither appears anywhere else in the Swiss index under any Hegnauer spelling (the harvests of 25–27 Sep 2026, and searches 8–9).
   • No American Leonhard or Christian Hegnauer born about 1810–1812 was found (search 10).

   So Leonhard (1812) remains no support for the "1813" of the 1884 Bates County directory: that entry is Luzius's (see H0001).

5. Elsbeth (1815): undecided.
   • The Elsbeth Hegnauer who bore a daughter, Elsbeth Gadient, at Igis in July 1838 could be Elsbeth (H1031, b. 1815) or Elsbeth (H1084, b. 1810, daughter of Jacob × Maria Ladner, buried at Igis 26 Jun 1839 aged 29, with no spouse named).
   • The child's father, Christian Gadient, had a son Johann Georg by Ceda Jenni in October 1839.
   • The child was probably the Elsbeth Gadient buried at Wartau SG in January 1840, with only her mother, "Elisabeth Gegeauer", named. H1084's sister Maria (H1070) had married Heinrich Rusch at Wartau in 1834. That would explain the child's being at Wartau if her mother was H1084 and had died in June 1839, but nothing proves it.
   • No marriage or burial of Elsbeth (1815) is indexed. H1102 stays a separate, unidentified person.
6. Jakob (1824): no death found. The Igis burial index runs to February 1887 (the latest Igis burial found is that of Christian Eggenberger, 13 Feb 1887) and has no burial of him. His last record is the baptism of his daughter Katharina, 28 Jan 1877. No later record of Katharina (b. 1877) or of Margreth Disch was found.

Leads (images; FamilySearch Center)

• The Igis baptism register for August 1810: 2 or 12 August for Christian.
• The Igis burial entries of 19 Mar 1809 and 5 Feb 1815: the parents' names.
• The Igis entry of July 1838 (Elsbeth Gadient): the mother's age or parents, which would decide between H1031 and H1084.
• The Rehetobel and Schiers marriage entries (1859, 1875): banns or wedding.
• Emigration or out-of-parish records for Christian and Leonhard: the Igis Bürgerregister (Familienregister), which should list every child of the citizen family with their fate.

Later finding: an Ancestry member tree (27 Sep 2026)

When the six were added to the Ancestry tree, each drew one hint, all from the same member tree, "newkoch" (tree 207846516, owner Thomaskoc), whose only source for these people is "Igis church records". Its dates agree with the Igis index for the baptisms and for the burials of Ursula and Maria, and it adds three that the index does not have:

• Jakob (H1032): died 24 Jul 1887, no place; both his marriages placed at Mastrils; second wife Margrath Disch (1833–1908).
• Elsbeth (H1031): died 17 Jan 1888, no place, no spouse.
• Luzius (H0001): died 1895 (the study has only "after 15 Jul 1890").

The 1887 and 1888 dates fall after the end of FamilySearch's Igis burial index (February 1887), so they may come from the register itself or from the Bürgerregister. They are recorded as leads, not facts, in the masters' Research Notes (H1031, H1032) and in data/leads.md; the hints were left pending. Elsbeth's date does not decide the Gadient question: both Elsbeths remain possible mothers.
