  • Record ancestry.com/search/collections/1127/records/6642129, image ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/1127/images/31617_072149-00334 (image 44 of 67, "Plat of Pleasant Gap, Township 39 North, Range 30 West").
  • The index gives "L Hegnauer". Another user has added the alternate name "[Lucius Hegnauer]". The record page also says it is in the owner's shoebox.
  • Image (Sec. 36, SW part): Fred Hammer 80; below it, on the south township line, "L. Hegnauer 80"; east of that, a strip "Anton Hammer 80" and then a strip "C. Hegnauer 80". Also in Sec. 36: Peter Schilt 80, J. W. Oench [Gench] 80 and Peter Grobe Est. 80.
  • Identification: this is the 80-acre tract shown as "L. Hegnau[e]r 80" in the same spot in the 1877 atlas, which is Leonhard's (H0003) farm (see H0003-member-media.md items 8-9). Leonhard is not indexed anywhere else on the 1895 Pleasant Gap plat, so the only "L" entry has to be him. "C. Hegnauer 80" is Leonhard's son Christian (b. 1868), who bought his place after 1887 (county history, 1918). The Prairie Twp plat in the same book shows "Leonard Hegnauer 82.05".
  • Verdict for H0001: wrong person (the land is Leonhard's). Ignore. The other user's "[Lucius Hegnauer]" alternate name is an error.

  • Index ancestry.com/search/collections/50054/records/4299542886 (topic "Club and Association"); page newspapers.com/image/863193711 (Appleton City Journal, Thu 1 Jun 1893, p. 2). The page was read on screen and no clipping was made.
  • Page: Appleton City Academy commencement. The programme lists a quartet sung by "Messrs. L. Hegnauer and Frank Gench" and an oration, "The True Spirit", by Leonhard Hegnauer. The "Academic Graduates" list includes "Leonhard Hegnauer, Jr." The new Alumni Association lists "L. Hegnauer" among the graduates of 1893.
  • Verdict: this is Leonard Jr. (H0012, b. 1872), Luzius's grandson, and not H0001. Ignore. (Lead for H0012: he graduated from Appleton City Academy on 1 Jun 1893.)

It has 8 sources and 7 records.
  • Verdict: Ignore (member tree). Leads: the death place of Boeuf, Gasconade is contradicted by his 1884 and 1890 residence in Bates Co. Margreth's death in 1897 is unsourced. It matches the H0003-survey note of another tree giving "6 Mar 1897, Brienz, Canton Bern", which is doubtful.

  • This is son Christian's (H0007) death certificate. Oregon State Board of Health, Jefferson County, Metolius, State Reg. No. [?]5. Deceased Christ Hegnauer of Metolius, male, white, married, husband of Elizabeth Hegnauer; born 2-18-1851; age 84 y 0 m 2 d; farmer; born Switzerland. Father: "Luciero" [Lucius] Hegnauer, born "S.E. Switzerland" [south-east Switzerland, which fits Graubünden]. Mother's maiden name: Margaret Bernet, born Switzerland. Informant Elizabeth Hegnauer, Metolius. Died Feb 20, 1935, attended 1932 to 2-20-1935, of chronic myocarditis, with arteriosclerosis as a contributing cause. Burial: Methodist Cem[etery], Metolius, Feb 23, 1935.
  • For H0001: this is a derivative source (the informant is his daughter-in-law) naming Luzius as Christian's father, with a birth date of 18 Feb 1851 that matches the Igis baptism exactly. The index was correctly ignored as a fact source for Luzius, since it is Christian's death. It should be saved to Christian (H0007) and linked to Luzius and Margreth as parents. Recommend "Don't ignore" and then accept on H0001 with no facts added (relationship evidence only), or save it from H0007's side to all three people.

  • Company Descriptive Book card, 4th Reg't Missouri Inf., Co. F: Lucius Hegnauer; age 42; height 5 ft 6 in; complexion dark; eyes grey; hair brown; where born: "Igis Switzerland"; occupation farmer. Enlisted Nov 18, 1861 at Herman[n] by "[initials unclear] Hundhausen" for 3 yrs. No remarks.
  • New and key: this is the first American record that names Igis as his birthplace. It ties the Missouri soldier directly to the Igis baptism of 1819. It also gives a physical description.

  • p2: Co. Muster-out Roll dated Benton Barracks, Feb 1, 1863; mustered out Feb 1, 1863; last paid to Aug 31, 1862; clothing account settled to April 30/62; remarks "Age 43". Book mark 5739 D 1888 / 457 VS 77.
  • pp3-9: company muster rolls for Co. F, 4th Mo. Inf., covering Jan-Feb, Mar-Apr, May-Jun, Jul-Aug, Sep-Oct and Nov-Dec 1862, plus a special muster roll dated Aug 18, 1862. He is present on every one. "Joined for duty and enrolled Nov 18, 1861, Hermann, 3 yrs". The footnote reads: "First current roll. No muster-in roll of this company on file. It was formed of Co. D, Gasconade County Batt'n U.S.R.C. Mo. Inf., per S.O. [9?], Hd. Qrs. State of Mo., dated January 18, 1862."

  • New: his exact service dates are 18 Nov 1861 to 1 Feb 1863, beginning in Co. D of the Gasconade County Battalion, U.S. Reserve Corps, which became Co. F, 4th Missouri Infantry in Jan 1862, and ending at Benton Barracks, St. Louis. The master record now says "Bet. 1861 and 1863" and should gain these dates. The spelling variant "Hegeman" is the same one used on the 1856 passenger list ("Hegemann").

Inf.; filed 1890 July 15; class Invalid; application no. 831,233; law "J" [Act of 27 June 1890]; certificate no. 638,825. No widow's or minor's claim. The "Died _ at _" line is blank. Bottom-left stamp illegible.
  • T288: ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/4654/images/32959_032874-02705 (record ancestry.com/search/collections/4654/records/1410114). "Hegnaner [Hegnauer], Luzius"; service F, 4 Mo. Inf.; filed 1890 July 15, Invalid, app. 831,233, cert. 638,825, state Mo.; no dependent, attorney or remarks.
  • New: a certificate was issued, so the claim was granted, and he was probably alive when it was allowed (certificate numbers in the 630,000s probably date to about 1891-92 under the 1890 Act; this needs checking against the file). No widow ever filed, which suggests Margreth died before him or did not survive long after him. The pension file itself (NARA RG 15, Invalid cert. 638,825) should give his date of death through the drop from the rolls, the last payment, or the Pension Agency's "dropped, death" notation. That is the best lead for the death date.

1890 Veterans Schedule, Pleasant Gap, Bates Co.

  • Line 13: house 80, family 83, "Hageneur Lucius", Private, company [blank], 4 Mo. Inf., enlisted 15 Aug 1862 (sic), discharge 186[blank], length blank. Post office: "Pappinville [Papinville], Bates Co. Mo." No disability or remarks.
  • New: his P.O. in June 1890 was Papinville, the same as in the 1884 directory. The 15 Aug 1862 enlistment date conflicts with the CMSR (18 Nov 1861) and is a later recollection. Note it as a conflict.

  • Lines 155-161, surname "Hegemann": Lucie [Luzi] 36 [sex written f], Marguerite 37 f, Johann 15 m, Leonhard 13 m, Christian[e] 10 [m], Martin 8 m, Christian 5 m. Ancestry's index reads the ages as 26, 39 and 19 for the first three, but the image clearly shows 36, 37 and 15. Nationality is indexed as Swiss.
  • Match: strong. There are seven people, and every given name, the birth order and every age fits the Igis family exactly as of Sep 1856: Luzius b. Dec 1819 (36); Margreth (37); Johannes b. Nov 1840 (15); Leonhard b. Apr 1843 (13); Christina b. Oct 1845 (10); Martin b. Feb 1848 (8); Christian b. Feb 1851 (5). The spelling "Hegeman" recurs in his 1861 CMSR. The 1856 year agrees with Leonhard's obituary and the county history. The French clerk rendered "Luzi" as "Lucie" and marked it female.
  • The master's page 1 header was glimpsed ("Ship Chase ... from Havre ... Sep 30 1856"). The master's name is illegible at screen resolution.

Newsom's County Directory for Bates County, MO, 1884 (in "U.S., City Directories, 1822-1995")

  • Records ancestry.com/search/collections/2469/records/1413238836 ("L Ger Hegnauer") and ancestry.com/search/collections/2469/records/1413238878 ("L Switzerland Hegnauer"). Image ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/2469/images/41199_1220706242_4152-00086 (image 87 of 234). The column heads, from the preceding page, are: Name, Where Born, Year, P.O. Address, Occupation, Wife Maiden Name, Where Born, Year.
  • Pleasant Gap Township: "Hegnauer L. ... Ger. ... 1813 ... Papinville ... farmer ... M. Barnett ... Ger. ... 1815". The next line is "Hegnauer L. ... Switzerland ... 1843 ... do [Papinville] ... do [farmer] ... S. Hershi ... Switzl. ... 1846" (Leonhard and Susanna Hirschi).
  • Match: strong for the first entry. The initial L. and surname match, the wife's maiden name is "M. Barnett" [Margreth Bernet], and he is listed beside son Leonhard in the same township and P.O. The nativity "Ger." and birth years 1813/1815 are errors in a derivative directory.
  • New: Luzius and Margreth were both alive in 1884, farming in Pleasant Gap Twp, P.O. Papinville.

Butler Daily Democrat, Fri 21 Mar 1890, p. 4, "Abstract of Deeds"

  • newspapers.com/image/999292856 (read on screen, no clipping made). Under Quit Claim Deeds: "Leonard Hegnauer et al to John Kamm, und[ivided] interest in se ¼ sec 27 twp 39 r 30."
  • Lead: a quitclaim of an undivided interest by "Leonard Hegnauer et al" suggests co-heirs or co-owners (Mrs. Kamm was Leonhard's sister). The Bates County deed books (Recorder, Butler) may name all the grantors and their spouses. Luzius was still alive in July 1890, so this is probably not his estate, but the deed should be checked.

Negative searches (2026-09-25)

  • 1870 U.S. census (Ancestry 7163): no Luzius or Margreth under Heg*auer, H*g*n*r, Hegn* or Hagn*, whether searched as born 1819 in Switzerland (±3) with residence ranked for Bates, Gasconade, St. Clair and Madison (Ill.), with spouse Margaret, or by first name Lucius. Children Christian (1851) and Barbara (1859) were not found either. Next: browse Prairie City Twp, Bates Co. near Leonhard (p. 24, dw. 173) and Boeuf/Roark Twps in Gasconade page by page.
  • 1900 U.S. census (Ancestry 7602): no H*g*n*r born Switzerland 1814-1824 in Missouri. Neither Luzius nor Margreth appears, which suggests both died before June 1900.
  • Find a Grave (Ancestry 60525), surname Hegnauer: 73 entries. There is no Luzius/Lucius or Margreth. The Bates County memorials are Emil (1870), Mary (1851-1885), Martin Sr., Martin Jr., Margaret (1877-1926), Anna (1860-1943), Leonhard, Susanna and Christian (1868-1957).
  • Death records category (Ancestry), Lucius Hegnauer, death 1890-1900 in Missouri: no relevant hits.
  • Missouri Wills and Probate (Ancestry 9071), H*g*n*r in Bates: no Bates County Hegnauer entries.
  • Passenger lists, Heg*auer 1850-1860: the only other Hegnauers were Johann (b. ~1822, NY 3 Dec 1857), the Frederic family (NY 24 Jun 1856) and Marie (NY 27 Dec 1858), none of them this family. The Chase entry above was found through "Leonhard H*" born 1843.
  • Newspapers.com, Missouri 1884-1900: "Hegnauer" gives 93 hits, 26 of them in Bates Co. Also searched the variants Hagnauer, Hegenauer, Hegnaur and Hagenauer (202 hits), and "Hegnauer died". The items checked all concern Leonhard, his son C[hristian], Leonard Jr., or lists of election judges and society officers: 5 Sep 1891, 12 Dec 1891, 3 Jun 1892, 1 Jun 1893, 13 Sep 1894, 3 Oct 1894, 29 May 1895, 19 Jan 1897 and the Henry Co. 1899 tax list ("H. Hegnauer", a different family). No death notice or obituary for Luzius or Margreth was found.
  • Fold3, "Hegnauer" filtered to US Civil War: 19 results. The only Luzius items are the two CMSR files, the T289 card and the Civil War Stories memorial page. He has no separate 3-month or Home Guard file.
