Life story
Maria Hegnauer was baptised at Igis, in the Rhine valley of Graubünden, Switzerland, on 23 January 1815, a daughter of Jakob Hegnauer and Christina Pleisch, who had married there in 1808.1–2 Like her brother Leonhard, born three years before, she took her name from her mother's side of the family: Christina's parents were Leonhard Pleisch and Maria Nett.3–4
Maria did not live long. An infant Maria Hegnauer, the daughter of a Jacob Hegnauer and very probably this child, was buried at Igis on 5 February 1815, thirteen days after the baptism.5 Before the year was out, on Christmas Day, her parents brought another daughter, Elsbeth, to the church to be baptised.6

- Baptism: Two index entries, both of 23 Jan 1815: one names the parents as Jacob Hegnauer and Christina Pleisch, the other as "Jakob Hegmnauer" and Christina "Fleischi".1
- Burial (probable): The burial of 5 Feb 1815 names only the father, Jacob Hegnauer, and gives the age as "0 days" (as indexed). Two Jacob Hegnauers had families at Igis then. The other, the husband of Maria Ladner, had had his last known child, Catharina, baptised in November 1813 and buried in December 1814.7 No other Maria Hegnauer was baptised at Igis between 1805 and 1830, so the burial is very probably this Maria's.5
