Christian Hegnauer was baptised at Igis, in the Rhine valley of Graubünden, Switzerland, on 21 May 1791, the youngest known child of Christian Hegnauer and Ursula Radig, and the third of their sons to be named Christian.1 Both his elder brothers of that name, Christian (1781) and Christian (1789), seem to have died young.2–3 His other brothers and sisters, Agatha, Nutt, Jakob and Elisabeth, were then between thirteen and six years old.4–7

He lived only a day or so. On 22 May 1791, the day after his baptism, he was buried at Igis, and the register again named his parents, Christian and Ursula Hegnauer.8 In eighteenth-century Graubünden, infections such as smallpox and tuberculosis, and in bad years famine, raised the death rate from time to time, above all among children.9 He is the last child his parents are known to have had; his mother was then about forty-five.10

  • Identification: Both the baptism and the burial name the parents, so the link is sound. His mother is indexed under her married name, Ursula Hegnauer, in both.1, 8 The index line for Ursula as the mother of a child Christian (66V7-5C38), once listed as an undated further burial entry, is the mother's entry of his own burial.
