Christian Hegnauer was baptised at Igis, in the Rhine valley of Graubünden, Switzerland, on 5 January 1781, the first son of Christian Hegnauer and Ursula Radig to be given his father's name.1 He had an elder sister, Agatha, and an elder brother, Nutt, and in September 1783, when he was two, his brother Jakob was born.2–4

Christian did not live to see his fourth birthday. A Christian Hegnauer aged three, very probably he, was buried at Igis on 14 June 1784, when Jakob was nine months old.4–5 In eighteenth-century Graubünden, infections such as smallpox and tuberculosis, and in bad years famine, raised the death rate from time to time, above all among children.6

His parents gave his name to two more sons, in March 1789 and in May 1791, and both, it seems, died as infants.7–10

  • Sources: FamilySearch's index of the Igis Reformed parish registers; the images have not been viewed.1, 5 The baptism names his parents as Christ Hegnauer and Urschla Radig: Christ is the usual short form of Christian, and Urschla a form of Ursula.
  • Burial (probable): The burial index of 14 Jun 1784 gives his age as 3 years and names no parents. No other Christian Hegnauer born about 1781 appears in the Igis indexes, and his parents named another son Christian in 1789, which fits the loss of this one.5, 7 Reading the register (DGS 8014188, image 374) should settle it.
  • An index line once thought to be another burial: The line for Ursula Hegnauer as the mother of a child Christian (66V7-5C38), undated in the study's extract, is the mother's entry of the burial of his youngest brother on 22 May 1791, not a record of him.10
  • FamilySearch and WikiTree: Until September 2026 his baptism was attached on FamilySearch to GJDP-GHF, the profile of his youngest brother. The study then gave him his own profile, PN73-GYP, with his baptism and burial. WikiTree Hegnauer-58 was created by the study in September 2026.
