Jacob Hegnauer is the first person of the name in the church registers of Igis, a village in the Rhine valley of Graubünden, Switzerland, where he married in 1715.1 Where he came from is not recorded. His sons Nuttin and Hanss Heinrich were very probably the heads of the two Hegnauer families of Igis later in the century, so that the later Hegnauers of Igis, among them the family that emigrated to America in 1856, would all descend from him.2–4

Origins

The name is a Zürich one. It comes from Hegnau, in the commune of Volketswil near Uster, in canton Zürich,5 and a Johans Hegenower was taxed in the city of Zürich as early as 1366.6 Before 1800 the only Hegnauer citizenships recorded in the Familiennamenbuch der Schweiz are at Elgg, in canton Zürich, and at Seengen, in canton Aargau;7 no record yet says which family, if either, Jacob left behind.

In the Graubünden of his day the communes drew a firm line between their citizens and the Hintersassen, incomers who lived among them without full citizen rights, and in the eighteenth century they admitted very few new citizens.8–9 What Jacob's standing at Igis was is not recorded.

Igis

Igis had been Reformed since 1532, and it had bought out the rights of the monastery of Pfäfers in 1650 and all the feudal rights of the bishop of Chur in 1670.10 With Zizers, Trimmis and Untervaz it made up the Four Villages (Vier Dörfer), a jurisdiction of the League of God's House (Gotteshausbund) that chose its own Landammann.11

Jacob was probably not alone in coming to Igis. In January 1717 Elsbeth Hegnauer married Conradin Michel there, and over the next seventeen years she had her children baptised at Igis; she was very probably his sister.12

Two marriages

On 1 March 1715 Jacob married Margreth Hartmann in the Igis church.1 Hartmann was an old Igis name: a Christa Hartmann was Ammann of Igis in 1571.5 Jacob and Margreth had two sons. Hanss was baptised in December 1715 and Flori in April 1717, but Flori was buried the following February, not yet a year old.13–15 Margreth was buried at Igis on 26 February 1724, aged forty-three, as Jacob's wife.16

Four months later, on 23 June 1724, Jacob married Leta Gujan.17 They had at least four children, all baptised at Igis: Nuttin in August 1725, Jacob in January 1727, Elsbeth in January 1731 and Hanss Heinrich in January 1734.2–3, 18–19

Last years

Jacob is last recorded alive at the baptism of his son Hanss Heinrich in January 1734.3 A Jacob Hegnauer was buried at Igis in August 1744; the entry gives no age, so it may be he or his son Jacob, then seventeen.20 The Hegnauers were later among the citizen families of Igis, a line that has since died out.5

  • Before 1715 (first search, 27 Sep 2026). A collection-wide search of FamilySearch's Swiss church-record index for a Jacob Hegnauer born 1675–1697 (77 results) found only the Elgg entries already known, and the study's variant-spelling harvest adds nothing for 1672–1697.

Research notes

  • Sources: Every record here is from FamilySearch's index of the Igis Reformed church book (FamilySearch DGS 8014188). The images can be viewed only at a FamilySearch Center or affiliate library, and none has been seen by the study. The index spells the name eight ways (Hagenauwer, Hagenautern, Hagenauer, Hamauer, Hegeauer, Hegrnauer and, for his sister, Hegenauerin and Hagenaderin), so a search for "Hegnauer" alone misses him entirely; these entries were found by the study's variant-spelling harvest of 27 Sep 2026. The origin of the name and the Hartmann note are from the Bürgergemeinde Landquart's notes on the Igis citizen families and the printed Zürich tax books; the historical background is from the Historisches Lexikon der Schweiz.
  • One man: The father at the baptisms of 1715–1734 is taken to be a single Jacob because the two marriages follow each other (Margreth buried February 1724, Jacob remarried June 1724), and because no other Hegnauer appears in the Igis index before the 1740s.
  • His children and the later Igis families (probable): Nutt, the father of children baptised 1746–1762, is taken to be Nuttin (1725): he is the only Nutt Hegnauer baptised at Igis, of the right age, and he named his first son Jacob (1746). Johann Heinrich, who married in 1763 and was buried in 1801 "born 1734", is taken to be Hanss Heinrich (1734). Both links are probable, not proven: no record names the parents of either man as adults.
  • Origin (open question): The Igis registers begin in 1616, the index has no Hegnauer in them before 1715, and the register entries as indexed give no place of origin. The images of the 1715 marriage (image 159) and the 1717 marriage of his probable sister (image 160) may add "von ..." or a note on his status (for example Hintersäss, a resident non-citizen), and the Igis Hintersassenbuch of 1792 and community papers (FamilySearch DGS 8482682, 8482680) may record the family's admission. Leads, none proven: (1) the "-auwer" spelling the Igis pastor used (Hagenauwer) is the one used in Zürich and Elgg in the 1600s (Hegnauwer at Elgg, 1682); a Hans Jacob Hegnauer was baptised at Elgg on 2 May 1686 (possible only; see below);21 (2) a Jacob "Hagenauwer" was the father of a Catharina who married at Stein am Rhein in 1721, and an Anna Catharina Hagenauwer married at Wagenhausen, Thurgau, in 1724; nothing yet connects them to Igis.
  • Citizenship (open question): The Familiennamenbuch der Schweiz lists old (pre-1800) Hegnauer citizenships only at Elgg and Seengen.7 It lists only the families that held a Swiss communal citizenship in 1962, however, and the Igis Hegnauer citizen family has since died out, so its silence does not show whether, or when, the family were citizens of Igis before 1800. The Bürgergemeinde Landquart's notes, which give the Igis citizen families as they stood in 1854, include the Hegnauers with no date of admission, record a Christian Hegnauer elected a Geschworener (communal councillor) in 1803, and note a Hegnauer who renounced his Igis citizenship in 1924.5 Since Hintersassen were shut out of communal decisions,8 the 1803 election suggests, without proving, that the family were citizens by then. The Igis Hintersassenbuch of 1792 and the community papers (above) may show whether Jacob came as a Hintersäss and when his descendants were admitted.
  • Before 1715 (first search, 27 Sep 2026): A collection-wide search of FamilySearch's Swiss church-record index for a Jacob Hegnauer born 1675–1697 (77 results) found only the Elgg entries already known, and the study's variant-spelling harvest adds nothing for 1672–1697. The Hans Jacob baptised at Elgg on 2 May 1686, son of Johann Hegnauer and Anna Gessner (indexed Hegnauter and Gestner), remains the best candidate, and possible only; an earlier Hans Jacob of the same couple, baptised in 1682, probably died young.21 Against him: a Hans Jacob Hegnauer, son of Johannes, was buried at Elgg on 24 Mar 1720, with no age in the index.22 If that burial is the 1686 man's, he is ruled out. It may instead be the burial of the infant Hans Jacob baptised at Elgg in July 1719 to Johannes Hegnauer and Esther Koller, to whom the study's Elgg family reconstruction provisionally assigns it; the burial image should decide. Excluded: the Hans Jacob Hegnäuer who married Margretha Stadelman at Elgg in 1698, because he stayed at Elgg; the Jacob burials of 1713, 1728, 1738, 1740 and later, all at Elgg; and the Catholic Jacobs of Pfeffikon, Lucerne (1675 and 1677, parents Jacob Hegnauwer and Maria Blatner) and Grenchen, Solothurn (1689, father Joan Petrus Hagenawer). The Stein am Rhein and Wagenhausen leads (above) were searched again in the second search (next point).
  • Before 1715 (second search, 27 Sep 2026, evening): a family at Igis? A wider search (51 logged queries) found three things that suggest Jacob did not come to Igis alone. None of them has been checked against the register images. 1. A "Hans Heinrich Hugenauer" was buried at Igis on 11 Dec 1729, with no age and no parents given (FamilySearch record 66V7-JDHB). Child burials in this book name the father, and nearly every adult burial of 1729–30 gives an age, so he was probably an adult, perhaps an incomer whose age the pastor did not know. Apart from Jacob, his children and Elsbeth, he is the only Hegnauer at Igis before 1744. 2. Jacob's probable sister Elsbeth Hegnauer, who married Conradin Michel at Igis in 1717, was probably the "Elsbeth Michlener" buried there on 19 Jul 1759, aged 69 (FamilySearch record 66V7-5KSZ). That makes her born about 1690. The identification is probable, since she is the only Michel wife named Elsbeth in the right generation. 3. Both named a son Hans Heinrich: Elsbeth in 1723, and Jacob in January 1734, four years after the Igis Hans Heinrich died.
    • Together these point to a family with a father Hans Heinrich, a daughter Elsbeth born about 1689–90 and a son Jacob. One such family is known in Zürich: Hans (Heinrich) Hegnauer and Elsbeth Bosshart. They married at Volketswil, the parish of Hegnau itself, on 23 Apr 1684 (FamilySearch record 6F8M-469X), and had Verena baptised there in 1686 (FamilySearch record 6FZR-CQ5B). They then had Elsbeth baptised at Elgg on 9 Jan 1689 (FamilySearch record 66VS-RNB3) and Hans Heinrich in February 1691 (FamilySearch record 66VS-13X7).
    • If Jacob belongs to them, his own baptism is not in the index. This is the best-fitting candidate, but it is possible only.
    • Two other candidates remain possible: the Hans Jacob baptised at Elgg in 1686 (above; the Elgg burial of 1720 leans towards the infant of 1719), and a Jacob baptised at Volketswil on 5 Feb 1682, son of Hans and Catharina (FamilySearch record 6FZR-GXBM).
    • The Stein am Rhein, Wagenhausen and Steckborn "Hagenauwer" families have no baptisms in their own parishes, so they were incomers too, and nothing links them to Igis.
    • What would decide it:
    • the Igis images of the 1715 marriage (DGS 8014188, image 159) and the 1729 burial (image 225);
    • the Volketswil marriage of 1684 (DGS 8120584, image 430);
    • the Zürich population registers (Bevölkerungsverzeichnisse, Staatsarchiv Zürich, E II 700) for Elgg and Volketswil, about 1690–1715, which list households and sometimes note members away "in Pündten" (in Graubünden).

The Jacob Hegnauer buried at Igis in August 1744 could be he or his son Jacob (b. 1727); the record page shows no age and no kin, so the index cannot decide between them.20 Two weak points lean towards the father: child burials in this book usually name the father (Flori, 1718: "father Jacob"), and this entry names no one;15 and no adult trace of the son Jacob (a marriage, or a child baptised at Igis, 1745–1775) has been found. It remains undetermined until the image is read.
