Ursula Radig, who was probably born Ursula Nadig, married Christian Hegnauer in the church at Igis, in the Rhine valley of Graubünden, Switzerland, on 15 January 1777.1–2 She was the mother of Jakob Hegnauer and the grandmother of Luzius Hegnauer, who took his family to America in 1856.3–5 Where she came from, and who her parents were, is not known. Nadig was an old Graubünden name, with citizen families before 1800 at Tschiertschen, Davos and Lantsch/Lenz,6 but no record yet ties Ursula to any of them.

Marriage and children

Over the next fourteen years Ursula bore at least seven children, all baptised at Igis: Agatha in November 1777, ten months after the wedding; Nutt in 1779; Christian in January 1781; Jakob in September 1783; Elisabeth in May 1785; and two more boys, both named Christian, in March 1789 and in May 1791.3, 7–12 She was about forty-five when the last of them was born.2

All three of her sons named Christian seem to have died young. One, aged about three, was buried in June 1784, a baby in September 1789, and the youngest on 22 May 1791, the day after his baptism.13–15 In the Graubünden of her day infections such as smallpox and, in bad years, famine raised the death rate from time to time, and children most of all.16

Later years

Her children began to marry at Igis: Nutt married Luzia Luzi in December 1806, and Elisabeth married Johannes Riedberger in March 1807.17–18 Ursula lived to see two grandchildren baptised: Nutt's son Christian in April 1807, and Elisabeth's first child, a daughter named Ursula, in December 1807.19–20

She died in the summer of 1808, aged about sixty-two, and was buried at Igis on 17 July; the register calls her Ursula Hegnauer, born Nadig.2 Three months later Jakob married Christina Pleisch, and the first child of their marriage, baptised the following March, was named Ursula too.21–22

The burial entries of her sons Nutt and Jakob name her as their mother, as does an Igis entry, probably her burial, for Elisabeth.23–25 In the register of Igis citizen families, as abstracted by the Bürgergemeinde Landquart, Jakob and Christina, and Nutt and Luzia, are two of the three founding couples of the village's Hegnauer families.26

  • Her surname (conflict; probably Nadig): The records made in her married life index her as Radig (five baptisms, 1779–1789), Redig (the marriage, 1777) and Rodig (a baptism, 1777).1, 7, 9, 3, 10, 11 Her own burial entry of 1808, the burial entries of her sons Nutt (1854) and Jakob (1858), and the entry for her daughter Elisabeth give Nadig.2, 23, 24, 25 The split coincides with FamilySearch's indexing batches: the 66VM and 66VW batches (1777–1791) read Radig, Redig and Rodig, and the 66V7 and 6F8D batches (1808–1858) read Nadig, so it may come from the indexers rather than from the register. The index is known to turn a written N into R: at Tschiertschen one couple is indexed both as "Chriss Nadig" (baptism of 1752) and as "Christ Radig" (baptism of 1758), and their son Peter's burial of 1837 names his parents as Christian Nadig and Agatha Philipp.27 No Radig family appears anywhere else in the Igis and Zizers index (the only Radig entries there are her own), while Nadig is a well-attested Graubünden name (Tschiertschen, Malix). The Familiennamenbuch der Schweiz, which lists the families holding a Swiss communal citizenship in 1962, has Nadig citizen families from before 1800 at Tschiertschen, Davos and Lantsch/Lenz, and no Radig family at all.6 Her maiden name was therefore probably Nadig (search of 27 Sep 2026). Radig is kept as the profile name for now, pending the register images (FamilySearch Center only, DGS 8014188), with Nadig as an alternate.
  • Given name: Ursula; "Urschla" (1779, 1781, 1785) is a form used in Graubünden (Romansh Urschla), and "Urs" (1783) a short form. The 1791 baptism is indexed under her married name, Ursula Hegnauer.8, 9, 3, 12
  • Birth: About 1746, computed from her age at burial in 1808.2 Her baptism has not been found. The search of 27 Sep 2026 of FamilySearch's Swiss church-record index covered: Ursula (and Ur*) Nadig and Radig born 1738–1756, collection-wide; every Nadig and Radig entry on the Igis and Zizers film (only her own entries and a Zizers entry of 1813); the Tschiertschen, Malix and Praden film (the Nadig girls baptised at Tschiertschen 1739–1758 include no Ursula); the Luzein film (no Radig); and the Scharans, Malans and Scheid film (four Ursulas born 1741–1751, none a Nadig or Radig). Nothing fits: an Ursula Redig buried in the Rheinwald on 2 Jul 1759, daughter of Jeremias Redig, was probably a child of another family, and the Ursula Nadigs found as wives (of Andreas Mullis, Jöri Jüni and Johan Marthi) belong to other parishes, with no dates that fit. No marriage of an Ursula Nadig to a Christian elsewhere, 1775–1779, is indexed. Still to search: the registers of Chur, the Schanfigg and Churwalden, and the Catholic registers of Trimmis and Untervaz. The images of the 1777 marriage and the 1808 burial may say where she came from ("von …").
